EP05: Stumped – 48hr Film Entry

In this episode I talk about our 2015 48-hour furious filmmaking competition entry experience. Our team Once a Tron a Time experienced highs and lows, as told in a mix of in-the-moment recordings and interviews as well as the comments added here in the studio. It was an epic journey with high drama, that couldn’t have been scripted better. …But I don’t ever want to have to go through that again! Our film was titled Stumped. But I am not going to give you any spoilers here about how it all turned out, for that you will have to listen to the episode!   Just know that we had fun as can be attested to by the following couple of photos… This is one of the props made quickly for the shoot. We had to keep it refrigerated because it wasn’t fully set. It did cause a little concern for one of the flatmates in the house we were shooting at when they came across it unexpectedly   And this was me keeping the crew entertained by allowing them to put a wig on me and take a photo. This was of course Alex, our makeup specialist, who can be very dangerous when bored. I find it easier just to give in and let her have her harmless fun…

December Update

Hi there I’m Chris Hanlon, and this is The New Zealand Filmmakers Podcast, following my journey to become a better filmmaker. This is an update to let you know what is happening with the podcast, and with my filmmaking in general. Firstly the goal of this podcast was to have a highly produced series of episodes that would feature interviews with more experienced filmmakers as well as my own experiences, successes and failures as I try new things in filmmaking. I was talking to a couple of filmmakers the other day who love this podcast, but voiced their frustration that there wasn’t enough episodes available. -Ouch! It was good to hear that people loved what we were doing, but it was painful to realise that I am letting people down. In 8 or so months we have published only 4 episodes, but we have several other interviews recorded.  In that time I went from being unemployed to part-time work, to full time work in a brand new business, to being made redundant for the second time in 20 months, to currently being unemployed again.  I have been taking advantage of this current absence of work to do a bunch of paid extra gigs on TV shows, and feature films. I am learning from every job I do. This has obviously impacted my focus on this podcast, and meant that I haven’t got all the work done that I need to do to get your episodes out to you. And I apologise for that. Sam, my editor and co-producer decided that we need to set some specific targets and work to a plan, and he is right. We actually have some content already captured and waiting to be done. In this update I wanted to tell you what we are doing, and when we will be publishing things for the next year. The Schedule The next episode is about our 48 hour film challenge entry Stumped. This will be published in January. In February we will finally publish Ben Fransham’s inteview March we have The lessons from the Only Humane Shoot April we have Chanelle Keoghan’s interview May will see the lessons from Mime and Daredevil Bad Blood June we have an interview with screenwriter Allan George July we hope to have an interview with animator Richard Mans August – December we will have a new episode every month, which will be created in the next 6 months. I would like to do more episodes more frequently. However my promise to you is that I will keep to this schedule for 2016, and then see if we can increase our frequency from there. Thank you for tuning in, and listening to The New Zealand Filmmakers Podcast. It is my mission to make sure that you get quality content on a schedule for 2016. EP04: Actor/Producer – Harley Neville

Chris talks to the lead actor of this year's feature film I Survived a Zombie Holocaust, and producer and partner in Pigville Productions; Harley Neville. In this episode we look at what it took to create I Survived a Zombie Holocaust. Harley gives us some insight into acting in New Zealand. But I personally was far more interested in the Journey that he and Guy have taken since procuring their first camera at 16 to make movies after school, all the way to releasing their first feature film, with their second feature film currently in post production, and a possible TV series on the cards. And of course, there is at least one funny behind-the-scenes story from I Survived a Zombie Holocaust. For a better understanding of Harley, and his partner in film, Guy check out this short ‘making of' video:   You can connect with Harley: Twitter LinkedIn Pigville Productions on YouTube I Survived a Zombie Holocaust Facebook Page The Guy & Harley Podcast And here is the Trailer for I Survived a Zombie Holocaust: Buy the movie on iTunes: Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. EP02: Producer & Lawyer – Tim Riley

Chris talks to Tim Riley a lawyer at Dominion Law in Auckland. Tim is the co-producer of the recently released Feature film Turbo Kid, with Ant Timpson. Tim and Ant also produced ABC's of Death and Deathgasm together. In this interview Tim talks about the role of a producer, or rather the many types of producers there are in the process of making and marketing a film. Tim gives us an insight as to the important legal aspects that filmmakers need to keep in mind before, during and after making their film. As well as his thoughts on how people need to approach working with each other, particularly creative and non-creative types. All of this great material was enough to give Chris a case of anxiety about his own short film that he is working on, and all the gaps he needs to plug as producer!
