213 “Mizumono” Rewatch: Stop Caring if Satan is Happy!
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Our rewatch of Season 2 concludes with a deep-dive breakdown of the pinnacle of the series, “Mizumono.” We discuss the melancholy and dread that build towards the inevitable bloodbath, and why it is necessary to return our characters to the event that started them on this road to doom and transformation. We applaud using Kade Prurnell as a device to dispel any notions of legal justice in this hellish dreamscape and marvel at Hannibal’s perpetual lack of self awareness. We analyze the themes of forgiveness and betrayal, and the attendant elements of victim blaming, doublespeak, and self-sacrifice. We are both thrilled with Alana but deeply saddened by the brief appearance of Schrödinger’s Abigail. Rachael tries to keep it together once Will arrives at the house of horrors while Amberlee is frank about her own sense of self preservation.

212 “Tome-wan” Rewatch: Face Off
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
The penultimate episode of Season 2, “Tome-wan,” welcomes Bedelia back while saying buh bye to the Vergers. Rachael gives Bedelia side-eye but loves her anyway. Amberlee is perplexed by the various Wills, and Rachael is utterly baffled by her vague note, “Hannibal is an ass,” but we both agree that it probably applies to the entire episode. We cheer Mason’s contrapasso but are ambivalent about Margot’s pyrrhic victory. You know it’s an odd Hannnibal episode when we admire Will’s dog food more than the food that the humans devour.

211 “K? No Mono” Rewatch: Operation Open Eyes
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
The Great Hannibal Rewatch nears the end of Season 2 with the antepenultimate episode, “K? No Mono.” We discuss how the theme of destruction and creation affect our characters as Hannibal and Mason fight for control of their pawns while Jack and Will enact some well-intentioned manipulations of their own. We debate the merits of the Verger storyline, marvel at Jack and Will’s plan to open Alana’s eyes, and delight in the entire FBI team playing Hannibal for a fool for a change. Rachael and Amberlee are divided over the cartoonish Mason but agree that the performance is spectacular. We look forward to poor Margot getting her revenge in Season 3 while we welcome Alana to the show and speculate that if Hannibal would stop being so Hannibal for more than five minutes, that teacup just might come together.

210 “Naka-choko” Rewatch: Metaphor Club, No Girls Allowed
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Reciprocity is the name of the game in Season 2 episode 10 of Hannibal, “Naka-choko.” Will meets the team at a tableau of his own making after viciously beating Randall to death. We discuss the difference between “becoming” and “design,” Will falling for his own design, and the intimate hand-washing scene. Will welcomes Freddie back to the main plot with a meet-up at The Murder Shed of Dark Comedy. We debate the efficacy of the show’s attempt to humanize Freddie and the necessity of violence, while wishing we could see Will getting Freddie on board with The Plan(tm). Mason the cartoon super villain makes his grand entrance and we mock him mercilessly. Jack continues to have the best poker face, Alana finds herself at an awkward dinner party, and Will slices the ginger.

209 “Shiizakana” Rewatch: That’s Not Very Sporting of You, Satan
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
In our rewatch of Season 2 episode 9 of Hannibal, “Shiizakana,” we talk a lot about the various types of love, friendship, and the way we interpret intimacy. We deconstruct Will’s dream and Hannibal and Will’s loaded therapy sessions. Amberlee’s question regarding the relationship between the title and episode significance results in a tumble down a rabbit hole of narrative structure, Netflix vs. linear television writing, the effectiveness of the Randall Tier storyline, and the wisdom of using silly horror movie tropes in such an important episode. Rachael is angry with Hannibal for preying on the weak and vulnerable, and we both love Margot, Jack, and Peter, while we can’t take our eyes off the slow motion train wreck of Will and Hannibal’s mutual seduction.

208 “Su-zakana” Rewatch: The Killer is Coming from Inside the Horse
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
The Great Hannibal Rewatch continues with Season 2 episode 8, “Su-zakana.” Will re-enters the field despite being really not an FBI agent and we all have a good laugh. We analyze Will’s desire to protect Peter Bernardone, the parallel victimization of Will, Peter, and Margot Verger, and Alana’s role in the interrogation room. Jack and Will go fishing before enjoying another marvelously bizarre meal at Hannibal’s. We discuss the brotherly, if you’re a Lannister, love between Hannibal and Will, Jack’s surprising ability to hold it all together, and the delightful return of the therapy scenes.

207 “Yakimono” Rewatch: I’m a Serial Killer-in-Training, Ask Me How
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Season 2 episode 7 of Hannibal, “Yakimono” wraps up the first half of the season in style. Hannibal’s grand plan continues to play out as he watches from the sidelines, and we are in awe of how masterful it is. We discuss Miriam’s return from the grave and Hannibal’s horrendous abuse of her. In between fares, Jack Crawford, of Jack’s Chauffeur Service for Abused Former Agents, continues his investigation of the Chesapeake Ripper. We analyze Jack’s guilt over Miriam and Will, the evidence against Chilton, and Jack’s preternatural ability to run gracefully in the snow. Will returns to his therapy sessions with Hannibal Lecter with pep in his step and a spiffy new haircut. We fangirl all over this new Will Graham while debating how much of his behavior is a performance. Chilton remains a constant source of joy, Alana continues to be an annoyance, and we’re all sad as Eddie IzzARD breathes his last.

206 “Futamono” Rewatch: I’m Totally Hitting That, btw
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
The Chesapeake Ripper is killing again and Hannibal is throwing a dinner party in Season 2 episode 6 of Hannibal, “Futamono.” Hannibal continues to use people as materials as he puts the final touches on his grand composition. We applaud Jack’s careful investigation, debate Alana’s big move and lack of self-interrogation, and remain impressed by Will’s ever-growing confidence while dreading his embrace of darkness. Will’s gloves are off as he confronts Hannibal for the terrible things he has done. We analyze this week’s appearance of the Willdigo, Will’s final conversation with Abel Gideon, and where exactly Chilton went wrong as we look forward to the next episode.

205 “Muk?zuke” Rewatch: Nice Rack, Will
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Season 2 episode 5 of Hannibal, “Muk?zuke,” picks up where “Takiawase” left off when Freddie the Pirate finds Beverly’s body in the observatory. We discuss the first death of a series regular, Hannibal’s decision to honor Beverly, instead of humiliate her, and the poignancy of the grief montage. Water imagery makes a return to the show with decidedly negative connotations. We analyze the use of water in the episode score, Will Graham’s rushing river of rage, and Hannibal’s fateful swim. Matthew Brown steps away from the wall to reveal himself as Will’s avid fan. We discuss Will’s manipulative ways, how he got to this point, and his transformation into the Willdigo.

204 “Takiawase” Rewatch: Curiosity Killed the Katz
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Season 2 episode 4 of Hannibal, “Takiawase” focuses on themes of suffering, caregiver abuse, and agency. This episode finds Bella and Jack grappling with her declining health. We discuss Bella’s decision to end her life, Hannibal’s role as the ferryman, and the juxtaposition of this storyline with the killer of the week. Will manipulates his way into Chilton’s good graces in an attempt to recover more hidden memories. We analyze Will’s drug trip down memory lane, debate his confidence in Chilton’s secret-keeping skills, and discuss his realization that Hannibal is both the Chesapeake Ripper and a cannibal. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and this episode marked the end for one very curious Katz. We wonder why Beverly couldn’t see things clearly without Price and Zeller, discuss the nature of her relationship with Will Graham, and revisit that fateful trip to the basement.

203 “Hassun” Rewatch: One of Us! One of Us!
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Our Hannibal rewatch continues with the much maligned Season 2 episode 3, “Hassun,” during which we experience a courtroom drama through a Hannibal lens as Will’s case makes it to trial. We analyze themes of false hope and a balance of opposites as personified by Will, Hannibal, and Alana, discuss the significance of Will’s dreams, and debate the point-of-view of the dressing scene. Jack’s surprising testimony spurs a discussion of where he is on his journey as Hannibal’s testimony causes us to debate his intentions. We giggle at Alana’s starey, non-blinky inner young adult and fangirl over Chilton’s predilection for exaggerated accents and fondling walking sticks. Rachael schools us on the differences between TV Law and Real Law, Amberlee is surprised by her Kade feelings, and we simultaneously look forward to and dread an upcoming storyline.

202 “Sakizuke” Rewatch: Serial Killers Be Crazy, Amirite?
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Art is people and people are art in Season 2 episode 2 of Hannibal, “Sakizuke.” Our characters wrestle with preconceived notions of identity as they race to track down The Muralist. We discuss Hannibal’s potentially deliberate manipulation of Team Sassy Science, Will’s definitely deliberate manipulation of Alana and Hannibal, and Jack’s continued journey of self-reflection. Hannibal fanboys all over The Muralist’s work before deciding to improve upon it and rhapsodizing on the nature of faith. We analyze themes of faith, reflection, and friendship as we breakdown Hannibal’s joy at resuming Will’s therapy, Jack and Beverly’s mutual understanding, and Bedelia’s decision to make one last visit to our characters before withdrawing.

201 “Kaiseki” Rewatch: The Ballad of the Sad Cannibal, Part Deux
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
We’re back with a rollicking discussion of Season 2 episode 1 of Hannibal, “Kaiseki.” This episode opens with a culinary clash and we waste no time discussing the emotional impact of the fight given that we know what comes next. The main job of this episode is to establish the new dynamic now that Will is incarcerated. We talk about how each character is dealing with this new reality, our issues with the writing for Alana, and Jack’s journey towards the truth. Hannibal’s transformation into the new Will Graham sparks conversation about parallels to Franklyn and a return to hilariously broody Hannibal. Themes of identity and reflection are also discussed as we analyze Will’s serene, watery memory palace, rhapsodize about Raúl Esparza’s S2 Chilton, and praise Bedelia’s continued devotion to amazing faces.

Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Our rewatch closes the book on Hannibal’s debut season with a super-sized discussion of the finale, “Savoureux,” and a wrap up of our favorite things from Season 1. Rachael is high on the show’s depiction of the consequences of violence, while Amberlee is excited to get to scrappy S2 Will and his crazy hair. We discuss the effect Alana’s absence has on her character, her conversation with Jack, and their Scooby Doo trip to Bedelia’s home. Despite everything, Will, amazing human being that he is, manages to achieve clarity and a stable sense of self just as the Wendigo makes his first chilling appearance. We breakdown Will’s realization of Hannibal’s part in all this, rejoice in his newly stabilized identity, and discuss the metamorphosis that Will has endured as we look forward to Season 2.

112 “Relevés” Rewatch: Science? Who Cares About Science?!
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
The Great Hannibal Rewatch continues this week with Season 1 episode 12, “Relevés.” Our characters grapple with themes of friendship, loyalty, and identity in an episode so full of subterfuge that only Will Graham could sift through it. Georgia Madchen’s fiery death inspires Will to reopen the Copycat case, which spurs Jack and Hannibal into action. Abigail gets caught in the middle, and her fate does not look good as we head into the finale. We discuss the parallel between Will and Georgia’s experiences and contrast that with Jack’s reluctance to see anything other than a killer. Hannibal and Jack both pay a visit to Bedelia, who continues to be awesome.

111 “Rôti” Rewatch: He’s a Terrible Compass
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Season 1 episode 11 of Hannibal, “Rôti,” features our favorite recurring characters, contains the most stunning and powerful hallucinatory sequences of the season, and explores identity and the consequences of caregiver abuse via the parallel tales of Abel Gideon and Will Graham. We discuss Chilton’s twitchy, kinetic behavior, penchant for fluid accents, and parallels to Hannibal that make Gideon’s situation all the more heartbreaking. Alana’s reappearance causes us to lament her shaky characterization and suggest reasons both practical and artistic for the general underdevelopment of the female characters. Will’s reenactment of Gideon’s escape shows the deterioration of his psyche as he struggles more than ever to keep himself separate from the killer, leading ultimately to a tear-jerking breakdown in Hannibal’s office. Hannibal continues to help by further chipping away at Will Graham’s identity, suggesting mental illness as the source of Will’s problems, and urging him to kill once again.

110 “Buffet Froid” Rewatch: He Smells Like a Baby Prostitute
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Season 1 episode 10 of Hannibal, “Buffet Froid,” kicks the abuse narrative into overdrive as Hannibal’s gaslighting of Will reaches new levels of awful. We discuss the terrors of abuse by caregivers and the feeling of isolation that so often comes with mental illness. Will’s desire to connect with Georgia gives us hope for his eventual recovery while Hannibal’s murder of the deplorable Dr. Sutcliffe threatens to do away with some of that optimism. This episode relies heavily on horror tropes to present us with a different kind of ghost story; we discuss the efficacy of the implementation of these tropes and the importance of Georgia being the scared monster under the bed. Rachael defends Jack who is still doing the best he can, Amberlee suggests Will is like a house, Beverly retains the title of Best Friend Ever, and we posit that Hannibal really does think he’s helping in his own unconventional way.

109 “Trou Normand” Rewatch: Donkeys Love Parfaits
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
Themes of leaving a legacy and public perception abound in Season 1 episode 9 of Hannibal, “Trou Normand.” We debate the merits of the serial killer of the week, Abigail’s attempt to exercise agency, and Will’s fear that both everyone and no one notices what he’s going through. Jack deals with Will as well as can be expected, Hannibal continues to drive all the wedges and manipulate all the people, and we suggest that everyone is doing the best they can under the circumstances. Alana makes some great moves this week; we discuss the importance of honesty, how relationships are confusing, and Will’s emotion-inducing admission of instability. Rachael derides Freddie’s etiquette, Amberlee wonders if Abigail is wise to the cannibalism game, and we declare that lotus root is people.

108 “Fromage” Rewatch: He’s Not Even Real FBI!
Episode in
The Person Suit: A Hannibal Podcast
The Great Hannibal Rewatch continues with Season 1 episode 8, “Fromage,” and once again performance is a major theme. We discuss Tobias’ murder theatrics as a courtship of Hannibal, their barely veiled exchange at the music shop, and Hannibal’s ultimate mercy killing of everyone’s favorite cheese person, Franklyn. Jumping into themes of dissonance and harmony we suggest a way the fight scene fits the theme, Hannibal’s friendship requirements, and Will’s continued sad descent into madness. Will may be dealing with frightening auditory hallucinations, but he’s also twelve. We mourn the sinking ship Willana, offer reasons why they’d be good together, and suggest that perhaps Will should have taken some time to wash his hands.
