Why no show for so long
Ellie interview
Talking point 1
Studio spaces. Are they still needed?
With the influx of photographers everywhere arguably the quality bar has lowered for customers so with that in mind has the importance of the photography studio diminished or is it more important to have your own space to stand out in the crowd?
Talking point 2
As more people join the creative industry because of a lower cost of entry due to mobile phones and ease of access to quality online training is the creative industry on the decline through over saturation or is it thriving?

20 Heat sucks! live arrives
Episode in
The Photography Junkie
Well the show is a little late to post this week thanks to there being a super hot spell turning my edit area into an oven making it somewhere i didn't want to be so apologies for that.
Live on youtube!
This is the first of my shows to go out completely live on youtube which means that from now on when recording i will be able to take questions live on air during the show.
Tell me how you like it do you like the look?
On with the show
On1 have announced ON1 photo raw which will be coming out later this year.
This works both as a standalone thing as well as a plugin so easy to integrate into your workflow.
Other things that the software has going for it are:
Non-destructive portrait retouching
Instant RAW editing
Non-destructive portrait retouching
Edit multiple versions of the same photo
Edit multiple photos at once
New RAW engine
Having looked at the videos online this thing is fast by comparison to lightroom ill be interested to see how it works with skin tones and maybe have it as the edit section as part of my lightroom workflow.
Of course time will tell on this but what do you think?
to check out more visit https://www.on1.com/apps/photo-raw/
Lensbaby Twist 60
For fans of Lens baby they have announced the Twist 60 which is an all metal design that is designed to give those swirly bokeh looks that you get from a Petzval lens.
Specs on the lens are as follows:
It is meant for full frame cameras for maximum swirlyness
It is a 60mm F2.5 lens
Available in Nikon F mount, Canon EF Mount and Sony E mount
Time of recording it is priced at $279 US
To me the lens baby system kind of falls into the same category as something like a fish eye lens in that its very easy to go overboard with it but a 60mm F2.8 speciality lens its certainly something i would like to look at and try.
to check it out yourself head on over to http://lensbaby.com/product/twist-60/
And Finally what caught my eye this week
Samyang step into the autofocus world with 2 new autofocus lenses.
Korean manufacturer samyang have stepped into the autofocus lens market with 2 autofocus lenses for the Sony E mount System.
The 2 new lenses come in a 50mm F1.4 and a 14mm F2.8
These will be the first autofocus lenses from Samyang who have been going for over 40 years now and are both optimized for use with both phase detect and contrast detect of the systems.
they have a 67mm filter thread so these are going to be some pretty chunky lens and samyang have been knocking it out of the park recently in terms of quality so i dont expect these will be any different in that aspect.
so tell me what do you think? are they going to be a welcome edition to your arsenal or will you pass it by?

Episode 16 Expansion and growth
Episode in
The Photography Junkie
Hello and welcome to the first combined episode which not only goes out as a podcast but also on the YouTube channel as well.
Some of the interviews that are coming up in the future i only had the chance to record the audio only but there are some that I have the video too as well so expansion is always good when it comes to producing media so make sure you head over to the channel on YouTube and subscribe there as well.
On with the show..
In the news this week:
Hasselblad has launched a brand new medium format digital body, the H6D, in both the familiar 50-megapixel CMOS flavor and also in a new, 100-megapixel CMOS configuration with the same Sony sensor found in Phase ones XF IQ3 100mp released early this year.
The specs of the camera include:
Built in wifi
Side by side Cfast and SD card slots
ISO range of 64-12,800 on the 100mp version
Inclusion of 4k raw video support as well as 1080p
I am not sure how i feel about the inclusion of 4k recording on what is mostly a studio stills camera i know that the look of medium format is beautiful but for the price of 28,900 euros for the 100mp version for video at least that puts them in line with a full RED system so for movie production i still see people using the RED system.
The full original Fstoppers article can be found Here
Think Tank Photo release the Production Manager 50
image courtesy of Think tank photo
This is a monster wheeled bag released by Think tank Photo designed to carry a whole bunch of gear and is a massive 53 inches long!
Its Main features include
Custom, shock-absorbing wheels are wide-set to minimize tipping
Reinforced handles on four sides for easy loading and unloading from your vehicle by two people
Fully customizable interior includes dividers to protect small and large lighting equipment including C-stands and large modifiers
This is a serious bag but I can really see a place for it in the world price wise it comes in at 600 bucks US but with think tanks warranty lasting as long as you own it i actually think this is a great bag for those who maybe have to transport say a portable studio setup for example.
in fact I think I am actually going to put it on my wish list for future purchase.
And finally
Lomography get successful funding on kickstarter to produce the Daguerreotype Achromat 64mm f/2.9 lens a revived lens based on the 1839 original but for modern cameras.
you can go from silky soft focus to razor sharp images via these little inserts plus create all manner of bokeh effects.
plus its a brass lens which i still believe just looks wacky and awesome in equal measure.
Check out their kickstarter video for more on this pricing will be around 500US for the brass one and 600 for the special edition black one.
Thank you for checking out the show as always be sure to leave comments and tell me what you think.

Episode 12 Digital Workflow
Episode in
The Photography Junkie
Hey everyone and welcome to the show.
The show nearly didn't happen this week as ive been in a bit of a funk as of late.
As creatives I'm sure you can relate you know that you have to do stuff but you just dont have the motivation to get off your ass and do it!
Bit of housework first thank you to the people that continue to support the show. Remember that you can find out ways to support the show at thephotographyjunkie.com/support
Also dont forget that on the site there is also the designer where you can design anything from T shirts and Hoodies to mobile phone cases just go to thephotographyjunkie.com and click on the design your own clothing tab to access the designer.
In other news I am being sent the first bit of gear to review on the show so i must be doing something right!
All the reviews that i do will be real world usage and i will go through the good the bad and the ugly and it will be put in its own section of the site and also on Youtube and will not be part of the podcast itself so you will need to keep an eye on the site for when those start to appear.
On with the show...
Digital workflow is something that affects us all and can mean the difference between a streamlined workflow that if we are charging for our work maximizes how much money we get for our editing time to a big chaotic mess that takes forever to sort out.
My own personal workflow goes something like this:
First of all i shoot what ever im shooting and i leave it for a couple days so I come to it with fresh eyes.
On import into Lightroom i choose from various import presets i have which are set up so various keywords and information are added for different shoot types etc.
I also change the file name to the name of people ive shot just so if i have to go through my raw files i know roughly who is who.
I also let lightroom stick to its default date structure for filing as i find that works for me.
once the images have been imported i go through in the library module and i star rate each image 1, 2 or 3 so and those numbers represent how good an image is so 1 star are crap shots, 2 stars are ok shots and 3 stars are ones i like.
So once ive gone through all of the images giving them one to 3 stars i filter the results to show me just the 3 star images.
So i then go through those images and compare similar looking images with each other and downgrade the worst of them to 2 stars removing them from my selection.
This means that all I am left with are the best of the best images to work on.
Of those images i then batch process if i need to say i was a little under in my exposure or groups of them need a different white balance etc then I will do that en mass.
Now is the point where i go through and edit the images and i don't need to do a lot of editing at this point because of the broad batch edit that has been applied deals with a lot of the editing choices. All I am left with are essentially tonal choices and crop plus the occasional spot healing as i am generally right in camera.
once the images have been edited they receive a 4 star rating so i know that they have been edited and ea 5 star rating if i feel they are portfolio worthy.
Exporting
When it comes to exporting i can export to my client galleries from directly within lightroom this creates a heavily watermarked image for preview, a non watermarked full resolution image for the customer to purchase as well as a thumbnail for the gallery.
If I am exporting to facebook i have various albums set up in lightroom that i can drag and drop to upload from directly within lightroom or i have export presets for various file types if i need to save them to my hard drive.
And that's it that is my own personal digital workflow.
Other peoples workflow?
Of course i wouldn't be me if i hadnt asked others for their workflow too so here are a couple people i asked about their workflow too.
First up is Warren Verity
Next i asked Scott Detweiler
Next up i asked Paula Vasquez-Meeks
After that i asked Melissa Niu
And finally i asked Karen Jerzyk
