Episode 2: Introvert vs. Extrovert: How to Embrace Your Position on the Spectrum

Welcome to Episode 2 of The Quiet Edge: Leadership for Introverts, the podcast that helps you embrace your strengths, grow as a leader, and thrive authentically.  I’m your host, Luisa Di-Finizio, and today, we’re diving into a topic that’s at the heart of understanding yourself as a leader: the spectrum of introversion and extroversion and how to work with your natural energy patterns instead of fighting them. For a long time, the world seemed to divide people into two camps—introverts and extroverts—as if you had to fit neatly into one box or the other. But in reality, introversion and extroversion exist on a spectrum, and most of us fall somewhere in between.  In this episode, we’ll be exploring why understanding your position on the spectrum matters, and how embracing your energy style can unlock your leadership potential.  You will learn today: The importance of using tools like personality tests and self-reflection to understand your energy style. How to create routines that integrate activities that recharge you and minimize those that drain your energy. How to create small adjustments, such as preparing for brainstorming sessions in advance, can help you thrive without compromising authenticity. I have also included 2 practical activities to help you better understand where you fall on the spectrum and how to leverage your natural strengths. Activity 1: Take a free personality test, like the Myers-Briggs or a similar tool. These tests can give you insights into whether you lean introverted, extroverted, or somewhere in between.  Reflect on the results and how they align with your experiences Write down one or two ways you can start working with your natural energy style—for example, scheduling recharge time after social events or seeking quiet moments during your day. Activity 2: Take a moment to reflect on the traits of an introvert that we discussed in episode 1.  Do you see more of yourself in the introverted or extroverted traits—or a mix of both? Write down three activities that recharge you and three that tend to drain you. Create a plan to integrate at least one of your recharging activities into your routine this week. As an example, Working in an environment with back-to-back meetings left me completely drained. To manage this, I started scheduling a 30-minute conference call in the middle of the day—not a video call, just audio—so I could step away from my office or home and go for a walk while still conducting the meeting.  The simple act of walking while talking became my way to recharge. It allowed me to reset and regain energy, even during a busy day. Without this small adjustment, I wouldn’t have been able to get through the day effectively. I encourage you to try this activity for yourself. Create a plan to integrate at least one of your recharging activities into your routine this week. By aligning your energy with your natural strengths, you can create a routine that works with your unique style rather than against it. Finally, remember, being quiet doesn’t mean being invisible. Leadership is about embracing who you are and using your unique strengths to create an impact. Introverts bring invaluable qualities to the table, and this podcast is here to help you thrive as the leader you’re meant to be. Thank you for joining me for this episode of The Quiet Edge. I’ll see you next time. Until then, continue to sharpen your edge, stay true to yourself and keep leading with quiet confidence.
