The Mental Load/Function vs. Morality | Ep 54

In which we discuss the Mental Load today's women must bear. Housekeeping tends to be a common topic here on the podcast, mostly because we are two housekeepers. Keeping the house/managing daily tasks/ordering the home is a responsibility we both have & it is a privilege to do them.  We discuss today the phrase "washing the dishes is functional, not moral". While this phrase is true to a degree, we dive more into the nuance of the phrase & of course get right into the heart of the matter: sin & its pervasiveness in our lives. The fact of the matter is: our heart in how we order our homes and (more broadly) our relationship to the jobs we have been given become kingdom work when we are members of the kingdom.  Since we are covered by the blood of Jesus, we can do the dishes with full joy in our hearts. It is so easy to be lazy & choose to put off things that we can very easily get done. In a world that tells you you are too tired to do the dishes, & lures you to the couch to check out, be the godly woman who does the dishes anyway. You've got this.

The Social Media Conundrum | Ep 53

Aaaaaaaaaand we're back with yet *another* episode about social media. This topic is one that we continuously return to because it's so large a part of modern life & it feels like a topic that rarely gets real attention.    While it is true that there is plenty of concern about the effects of social media on our brains, we as believers must think about the effects of social media on our hearts. And as we do with everything else, we must ask the question: What about my social media use is sinful & how do I kill that sin?     Of course, there are plenty of other questions we may ask as well: Am I using social media to bring people to Jesus, to share the gospel, to encourage and uplift people through Scripture, or am I making an idol of myself? What kind of content am I posting- does it glorify God or does it glorify me? What effect do "likes" & "follows" & "comments" have on me? When I am consuming content, does it aid me in showing fruits of the spirit or does it lead me into anger & covetousness? These are just a few of the worries that social media wells up inside of us.    No matter how you use social media, one thing that is always true is that we can always Love God more and love the world less.  The amount of social media we consume should be minimal in the face of our time in Scripture, our time serving others, and our time tending to the field God has granted us. If social media at all gets in the way of you effectively doing these things, consider cutting down or cutting out altogether. I'm willing to bet it will make you feel a whole lot lighter.    So at the risk of appearing inconsistent, please enjoy this podcast about cutting out social media (made available to you by the use of social media). Submission For Beginners, 2.0 | Ep 52

A year ago we sat down to talk about our thoughts on submission. As married Christian women, submission is a topic we encounter daily. So here we are a year later and we still have lots of thoughts (obviously) on this subject! The world says that submission is bad, which isn't shocking when we look at how it is taught/perceived. We see women standing up bravely for justice and the gospel in scripture but then we are told that submission is just quietly accepting everything that everyone tells us. That is not submission, in fact that is a willful misunderstanding of Christian submission. Submission in Christian marriage is something wives gladly give. And when it is not gladly given, it's usually because God is using it to prune and sharpen us. Godly, submissive wives are still called to speak God's truth, to share the gospel, to stand firm on their beliefs, to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Submission is a joy and privilege that we freely give. It is not a hinderance to our mission; but a safeguard. As always, thanks for listening. We greatly appreciate it!

Summertime Sadness | Ep 51

Shock and awe! We uploaded a podcast. 2020 is weird and busy, and that's exactly what we talk about in this episode.   Busyness is a subject that is close to our hearts because it is a reality that seems unavoidable in today's world. We all have a million things to do, places to be, people to spend time with, responsibilities to take care of, etc. All these things are necessary & for the most part good to do. But sometimes, when the marathon is over & we no longer have to sprint, we are left with a worn out, empty sort of feeling. A product of a summer full of fun & fellowship could easily lead to a summertime sadness.    What do we do when that happens? We cling to Jesus of course. We rest in Him, we take comfort in His words, and we pray that our need for rest doesn't turn into a sin pattern of laziness, neglect, and anxiety. Will we do this perfectly? No. Do we have a great High Priest who is walking beside us in the lowest of valleys? Yes.    Psalm 16 16 Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;    I have no good apart from you.” 3 As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,    in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;    their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out    or take their names on my lips. 5 The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;    you hold my lot.6 The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;    indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. 7 I bless the Lord who gives me counsel;    in the night also my heart instructs me.8 I have set the Lord always before me;    because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;    my flesh also dwells secure.10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,    or let your holy one see corruption. 11 You make known to me the path of life;    in your presence there is fullness of joy;    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.   Follow Us on Instagram: @righttherepodcast@paytonhendershot

Testimony of a Corona Bride | Ep 50

In which we discuss being a Corona Bride with our bff Kate Bradley. We talk of trusting the Lord in times of uncertainty, disappointment, and unmet expectations. As well as the importance of taking every thought captive & staying in the Word every day!  As always, the only conclusion we can ever come to & the only advice we can ever give is run to Scripture in all situations. It is profitable for all things-- even peace during wedding planning!   Follow us!@righttherepodcast@paytonhendershot

Moving On From Ministry? | Ep 49

Fresh from a little vacation, we sit down to give some life updates & talk about Tori’s transition out of active ministry with Young Life. Ministry & service are lifelong commands for the believer, but the different seasons of our lives call for different types of ministry/service. There are lots of reasons to move on from one thing & jump into another. As always, the biggest piece of advice we could ever give is to stay in Scripture & pray without ceasing. The more time spent in God’s word, the more familiar his voice becomes. Biblical discernment is dependent on engaging with Scripture. If you’re struggling with a decision, go to Scripture, spend plenty of time in prayer, & seek the wise counsel of other believers. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:1-2‬ ‭ESV‬‬ (this whole chapter is 🙌🏻) Follow us on social media: @righttherepodcast @paytonhendershot

Take A Break | Ep 48

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭26:3‬ ‭ESV‬‬ In this week’s episode, we talk about the need to log off of social media every now and then (maybe especially now). We are told that every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of light & there is no shadow or variation in Him due to change. The world is constantly changing, constantly tempting us to take our eyes off the one who does not change. In times of grief, in times of confusion, in times of absolute chaos & destruction, we must keep our eyes on our Father. He has promised to restore & make new all the broken things in this world. When Satan tempts me to despair & tells me of the guilt within, upward I look and see Him there who made an end of all my sin. If you have been tempted to despair, if you have been quick to forget the hope within you, take a break from all the noise, go to a quiet place & nourish your thirsty soul with the Living Water & your hungry heart with the Word that became flesh.

Have you ever had fried chicken? | Ep 47

In which the gals discuss food, eating well, & loving your neighbor through eating—in a world where it’s so easy to not. Idolizing self & idolizing food is an easy trap to fall into— a trap that we are all certainly guilty of time & again. But it’s always good to take a step back and ask the question: Is my diet becoming a sin problem in my life? We also talk about a bunch of random other things per usual including “near-death” experiences & power lines. Thanks for listening!!! Productivity Is Not The Enemy | Ep 46

What's Up, Buddies! In today's episode, we talk about the importance of productivity! We have noticed that during this quarantine season there have been many opinions about productivity-- is it good, is it bad, am I doing too much, am I doing too little, etc.  It seems that it is easy to fall to one end of the spectrum or the other & difficult to land in the middle. One end is saying that because we are suffering through a pandemic, we should all veg out, ignore the pressure to be productive, & just binge all the Netflix shows. The other end is over-producing, organizing every nook & cranny, staying busy just to ignore the uncomfortable feelings they are feeling right now.  Fortunately, there is a healthy middle ground. Colossians 3:23-24 says, "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ." We don't ignore the work we have to do because we have a true hope & we also don't over-produce in an effort to control/earn something for ourselves. Our inheritance is eternal life with Christ, our Good Shepherd. Productivity is not the enemy! It is a chance to be faithful & serve cheerfully. Let us not forget that (even in our temptation to do otherwise)!   Follow us on Instagram! @righttherepodcast@torimaffucci@paytonhendershot

Irrational Emotions & Taking Every Thought Captive | Ep 45

What’s Up Buddies! We’re back with a Corona Catch Up. We chat about our current favorite TV shows & our new work schedule & the struggles of female emotions! Hormonal emotions can lead to irrational thoughts/thought patterns/actions. We are called to take our thoughts captive and not allow them to control our lives. Sometimes we do that successfully (with the Lord’s grace) & sometimes we fail miserably (all on our own). But God is rich in grace & patience. He is diligently pruning and disciplining those He loves. Sanctification can be so slow but He is still there even when we can’t see it! Follow us: @torimaffucci @paytonhendershot @righttherepodcast

Social Media Is Driving Me Crazy | Ep 44

We’re back from an extended spring break! Quarantine had us in desperate need of rest & social (media) distancing. While we have been social distancing from each other for the most part, we've been continuing to meet each week to record. Yesterday we got together and had a nice catch-up chat— we talk through our own struggles with social media during this pandemic, our strange but oddly wonderful Resurrection Day celebrations, and just in general how we've been feeling throughout all this craziness.  We've missed uploading regularly but we are back and ready to roll! What in the World is Going On??

Hey Ladies! Things are crazy right now. The Coronavirus is spreading quickly & with it comes mass chaos and mass fear. While it is difficult navigating the unknown, we must always remember that our God is in control. He is good & He is trustworthy & He is not surprised by the Coronavirus. In times like these, we get the privilege to act on our faith & be an example of trust and peace to others who do not have a hope. We trust the living God and therefore we are to be as bold as lions (Proverbs 28:1) & unafraid of the future (Proverbs 31), no longer fearing anything that is frightening (1 Peter 3:6). Our hope is secure. Let us use this time to love our neighbor as best as we can, to spend time in the Word & in prayer, and to rest in God’s wonderful sovereignty. He will make all things new. Under the Influence

Hey buddies! The 21st century so far has been marked significantly by the age of the celebrity influencer. It seems like every time we log on to the internet we are bombarded by celebrities telling us what to wear, what to eat, who to vote for, and what to believe. In today’s episode, we talk through Taylor Swift’s (fairly new) documentary “Miss Americana”— we talk about her career, some allegations she made in the film, and in general, the danger of celebrity influence. Celebrities are not our moral arbiters, God is. He has given us his word and it is profitable for all things. If we are going to be influenced by anything, let’s be influenced by His word. Let us wear it on our hearts and put it on our doorposts and talk about it with our friends & family. Non-Negotiables

Hey buddies! For today’s episode, we felt like it was important to make a few clarifications about where we stand on certain things. We chose six “non-negotiables” to discuss. Six things that we stand firm on no matter what. They are foundational and they define how we respond to, think about, and interact with God’s Word & everything around us. These aren’t our only non-negotiables but they are at the top of the list! Just think of it as a bumbling, non-eloquent statement of faith. Your Sin Patterns Aren't Personality Traits

Hey Buddies! Today we talk about the statement: “Your sin patterns aren’t personality traits.” This can be a pretty shocking statement to make in today’s self-care culture as we consistently are told to identify with our sin patterns instead of fleeing from them. We both have been convicted recently to work on killing particular sin patterns in our lives (anger & anxiety). We have been given a new identity in Christ and are called to imitate him and be doers of his word. While it’s true that some sin patterns may take years (maybe even our whole lives) to kill, it’s just as true that we need to continually view those patterns as just that: sin. Christ’s free gift of salvation means that we are no longer slaves to sin, but slaves of God (Romans 6:22). Sanctification and sin killing go hand in hand. Luckily God has given us so many resources for the battle: His Spirit which urges us to be more like Him, His Word which speaks life into us and is profitable for all things, and His church, a community of believers bumbling along just like you who are there to pray for you, encourage you, and walk alongside you.  Let’s be countercultural and say no to the sin that hinders sanctification and yes to the peace that surpasses all understanding. Keeping Up With The Housekeeping

God has called us wives to joyfully order our homes & serve others. But what happens when ordering doesn’t come naturally & our attitudes are bad? We talk about our struggle to keep up with the housekeeping & to keep up a good attitude while doing it. The temptation to fall into comparison, laziness, & even anger toward our created order is often extremely tantalizing. But we don’t have to fall victim to it every time. God is our Good Shepherd! He is readily available with wisdom, comfort, & discipline (even in the messiest of messes). Follow us!@righttherepodcast@paytonhendershot@torimaffucci

Responding to Tragedy

The shocking death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna had everyone in America thinking about the fragility of life.  Any person can experience tragedy at any time. As believers, we are given God's word to prepare us for those times. We have a greater hope than any in times of tragedy: God is good, he is in control, & this is not our home. We can very often be tempted to despair, but our King Jesus has overcome the world.  Follow Us on Instagram!@righttherepodcast@paytonhendershot@torimaffucci

Seasonal Sadness

Lack of daylight got you down? Are you constantly sad and craving a warm bath? You’re not alone. This time of year it is normal to feel a little less energetic & a little more sad than you normally do. And while it is normal, it isn’t an excuse to let your seasonal sadness be lord over your life. Kill your sin, even if that means ditching the “self-care”.
