Sail Loot Podcast 064: Offshore Sailing with Captain Ryan and Sail Libra
Captain Ryan and I met a few years ago on a sailing trip on S/V Libra from Pensacola to the Miami Boat Show. It was an awesome trip. I learned a whole lot about offshore sailing and I hope that I helped Ryan book a few more trips on Libra at the Miami Boat show.
Ryan had done a Sail Loot Podcast with me a few weeks prior to our trip across the Gulf of Mexico. In typical Sail Loot form, you can learn all about how Captain Ryan got into sailing and out from behind a computer job at Delta. We also discuss his sailboats, businesses, and other sailing financials.
I was able to catch up with Ryan a few weeks ago in Christmas Cove in the US Virgin Islands. A lot has happened in those 2 years since our last sailing adventure. In this episode we talk more about where S/V Libra has been in the last few years, what you’ll learn on an offshore passage with Sail Libra, and some of the costs associated with running an offshore sailing business.
Captain Randy on S/V Libra‘s new hard top!
Whale on the Silver Banks!!!
S/V Libra…St. Lucia…Join a Sail!!!!!
A Few Things You’ll Learn about Sail Libra:
Where Captain Ryan and Libra have been since 2 years ago when I was last on Libra.
How Libra got to Christmas Cove, St. Thomas.
Whale watching on the Silver Banks.
The fun things that can happen on a passage.
Something is going to break on a passage, and it will have to be fixed or mitigated at sea.
Upcoming trips on Libra
Some things you may learn on an offshore sailing adventure
Offshore dynamics
Costs of running an offshore adventure sailing business.
Anchoring with Mantus Anchors.
Building the hard top dodger and bimini on Libra.
The costs of building the hard top.
USCG NVIC requirements for running an international “charter” boat
Legally going to Cuba the first time on S/V Libra

Sail Loot Podcast 063: Sailing With FIRE on Luna Sea with Mark and Jennifer
The financial “movement” being dubbed FIRE – Financial Independence Retire Early – was an acronym that was unknown to Mark, Jennifer, and yes, even budding financial zealots such as myself. Somehow, over the last few years, we’ve all seemed to use some of the FIRE principles even though we didn’t know what they were.
Mark and Jennifer have been preparing for a post-cubicle life of traveling for some time. While Mark was stationed overseas for work they figured out that they really didn’t need all of the STUFF that they had accumulated to live a happy life. When they got raises, they figured out that they could live comfortably by stashing the extra money that they made instead of using it to purchase more stuff that they didn’t actually use.
By downsizing, saving, and having a few rental properties that generate a little income on a monthly basis, Mark and Jennifer have been able to “retire” early and set sail on S/V Luna Sea. Enjoy the episode!!!

Sail Loot Podcast 062: Andersons Abroad own Sea-Tech Systems to make Sailing Money
Rich and Devon’s sailing story started the way most crazy sailing stories start…intoxication. The good news is that Rich didn’t want a divorce. He didn’t want to have a third child. He just wanted to quit his job and sail around the world!!!
Luckily, so did Devon.
Rich and Devon finished their dinner, drinks, and lovely family vacation in Hawaii. Upon returning home the research and preparations for their life on the water began.
Eventually, they found S/V Mobert and started downsizing. They’ve now been on the water full time for a little over a year and decided that they wanted to try to have a means of income. Their purchase of Sea-Tech Systems is that income stream to keep their cruising kitty topped up.
Yup, Rich, and Devon decided that they were capable of owning and operating a business remotely from their sailboat while cruising with their family. It’s right up their alley as Rich is an IT/Tech type of guy and they had to figure out how they were going to stay connected enough to run a business from a sailboat in remote locations. Your needs may be a little different than theirs, but they’ve got the knowledge and systems to help you stay connected as much or as little as you desire.
I hope you enjoy listening to how the Andersons have been able to sail Abroad as much as I enjoyed chatting with them!

What they do about US health insurance.
How much they paid for S/V Mobert, their down payment, and their loan payment.
What they did with their house on land.
Where they’ve been since they released the dock lines.
Their sources of income prior to taking off.
Insurance company and costs.
Location costs.
Marina costs.
What if you want to make sure that everything works even though you NEVER USE EVERYTHING?
Why they purchased Sea-Tech Systems.
What Sea-Tech Systems does.

Sail Loot Podcast 061: Asante Sailing Costs August 2017
August of 2017 on S/V Asante started with a two-day sail from Fort Lauderdale, FL to Hilton Head, SC.
Included in the preparations to sail North were provisions, alternator rebuild costs, diesel fuel, and travel and transportation expenses. August of 2017 was also the first month that I had to pay for dockage at Shelter Cove Marina.
August was still my cheapest month of cruising costs – okay, let’s call them sailing costs, errrrr, boating costs? – since purchasing S/V Asante.
I also talk a little more about batteries and my battery bank. There were a few corrections that I needed to make from Episode 60.
Overview of Asante‘s August 2017 Expenses
Asante‘s boat equipment costs for August of 2017
Boat Maintenance, Loan Payment, Dockage, and Misc Equipment for Asante in August of 2017
Fuel, Gifts, and Groceries for Asante in August 2017
Asante Meals and Memberships for August 2017
Transportation costs for Asante in August 2017
A Few Things You’ll Learn about my August 2017 S/V Asante Sailing Costs:
My total costs for the month of August 2017
The costs associated with relocating Asante from Ft. Lauderdale to Hilton Head Island
Installing re-built alternator the day before a 2-3 day sail.
Getting Discounts from friends that work at West Marine
Some Diesel Fuel Costs
Clarification about my battery bank
A monthly comparison of boat costs over the first 4-5 months of ownership of Asante
Specifics of how I cut my living costs.
Specifics of what I spent money on.

Sail Loot Podcast 060: Cruising Costs Monthly – Asante Sailing Money July 2017
I learned a lot about boating in the month of July 2017. A few snafus taught me what not to do again. A few victories taught me what to do again. Everything taught me that I really just want to be at/on Asante as much as possible.
Some boat owners hire people to clean and maintain their boats while they’re away. Not this guy.
I return to Asante after being gone for 3-4 weeks and not only are the planned projects waiting for me but so are the ones that pop up because she is sitting there alone for so long. Had I been on Asante when the power cables got stuck under the piling protective fenders I probably could have saved my batteries. I certainly would’ve given her a good scrubbing or two.
Asante is my home and she needs regular cleaning and maintenance just like any other home.
I’m getting to her every weekend now and things are much better. Here is what I had to spend some boat money on in July of 2017.

Asante Maintenance and Purchase Costs in July 2017
Costs of Transportation to Asante in July 2017

Meals and Training costs for Asante in July 2017
A Few Things You’ll Learn about my July 2017 S/V Asante Cruising Costs:
My total costs for the month of July 2017
Why I left Asante for so long.
What to watch out for with changing tides and docks that don’t float.
What happens to your batteries when your shore power has been unplugged for 3-4 weeks and you left your fans running.
Becoming a true sailor.
Alternator failures.

Sail Loot Podcast 059 – Cruising Costs Monthly: Asante Sailing Money June 2017
Yes, it’s a little bit later in the day than last Friday, but I did get this podcast released 1 week after Episode 058! I love it when I hit a deadline that I tell the world about. (This might actually be a first for Sail Loot).
I don’t think that I thanked enough people in the episode so I am going to thank them here. I would’ve spent a lot more money in the month of June if it weren’t for Bob Ross of Leopard Catamarans and the Hammonds. These kind people offered me free dockage for S/V Asante for an evening and a few months, respectively. Gene and Kat always hold a special place in my heart. I may not have realized that this sailing adventure was possible without them, the Hammonds are Kat’s parents, we’ve been friends for 20 years, and there are too many other reasons to list. Gene, thanks for calling Bob and securing us a night’s dockage at 6 pm on a Saturday evening while we were about to enter Port Everglades after 7 days at sea.
Here is a breakdown of my cruising costs for June of 2017 while I was mostly not sailing. Have a comment? Leave it below!

Sail Loot Podcast 058 – Cruising Costs Monthly: My Sailing Money April to May 2017
My need to gather equipment was immediate. I decided that my best option was to sail S/V Asante approximately 1300 miles across the North Atlantic Ocean for 7 to 10 days and that I would start this trip 2.5 days after the purchase was final.
This decision was made only 2.5 weeks prior to the agreed upon purchase date and 3 weeks prior to crossing an ocean. This is not enough time to scour for deals on EPIRBs, flares, radar reflectors, a Garmin InReach Explorer+, charts, binoculars, self-inflating offshore life vests, harnesses, jack lines, and all of the other equipment necessary for an offshore delivery. Had I had more time I would’ve been able to use my West Marine contacts (Pam Wall, Pat Brasfield) for discounts, comparison shop, ask all of my wonderful Sail Loot Ralliers for advice, help, etc. Alas, Amazon Prime 2-day shipping was really my best option for many items.
Here is the breakdown of my cruising costs, and closing costs for S/V Asante. Have a comment? Leave it below!
Pie Chart Overview with Categories of my Cruising Costs and Sailing Money during the purchase month of S/V Asante

Boat Equipment 3: The final screenshot of the detailed boat equipment list.
Boat Maintenance Costs for S/V Asante prior to purchase and sailing to Florida.
Survey and FedEx costs to purchase S/V Asante
I had to provision for 5 people to make a 7-10 day delivery.
I had to eat during my travels to and from Tortola and St. Thomas. I drank some too. After all, who doesn’t have a few Pain Killers and Presidentes after a hot day in the sun?
I also had to transport myself to, from, and around Tortola and St. Thomas. Luckily, no flights had to be purchased! Points/miles were used of course! The Sailing Membership fee will go away in a few months.
A Few Things You’ll Learn about my April-May 2017 S/V Asante Cruising Costs:
Why I made the decision to bring S/V Asante back to FL
The time I had to provision and equip Asante for a passage
Some of the tools and safety items that you should probably have on your boat for a passage – of course everyone has their opinions.
I should’ve purchased a spare propane regulator
The cost of a survey and rigging work.
Grocery/Food costs for 5 people for 7 to 10 days.
Asante insurance costs
And much more!

Sail Loot Podcast 057: Lazy Geckos Water Conservation Lessons to Save Sailing Money
I had the honor of meeting Jeremiah and Brittany at the Strictly Sail Miami Boat show almost a year ago. By the way, I plan on attending again this year (2018). If you happen to live in the area and have a couch that you don’t mind this sailor/podcaster crashing on for a long weekend…
We looked at boats, took shots at Hooters, and enjoyed our respective time in Miami. Finally, we were able to sit down for a chat this past November. Finally, I’m releasing that chat as a Sail Loot Podcast.
The Lazy Geckos story starts with the familiar desire to get out from behind a desk, yet, they also didn’t want to be stuck sitting behind the wheel of an RV. They found that sailing might be the best option to keep everybody in the family happy.
Would they be able to keep children, pets, and themselves safe while traveling the waters on a sailboat? Of course!
From that point forward it was a question of how the Lazy Geckos would be able to afford the cruising lifestyle on retirement funds from the United States Marine Corps. As you’ll hear, their answer was more about figuring out how to live simpler lives and not giving into the “see now buy now” commercialism mentality that plagues the majority of the world.
Jeremiah and Brittany share so many awesome tips about how they downsized, started saving money and got out of debt to start their sailing adventures!

Sail Loot Podcast 056: S/V Smitty – Sailing from Boston to the USVI with Jesse, Stacey, and Summer
I met Jesse and Stacey from S/V Smitty in November of 2016. They’re long time listeners to the Sail Loot Podcast and we had sent a few emails back and forth to each other before I went on a charter vacation in the BVI.
Jesse and Stacey live on S/V Smitty, their 2001 Catalina 310. S/V Smitty is on a mooring in Bay de Grigri between the island of St. Thomas and Water Island.
I stayed in St. Thomas for one night to meet up with my 3 other friends that were joining me for a week of charter sailing in the BVI. As soon as we got our gear situated in the Windward Passage we walked down to the Greenhouse Restaurant and Bar where we met Jesse and Stacey. They, of course, already had a rum drink in hand.
I learned that Jesse and Stacey had sailed to the islands from Boston on their 30ft sailboat and, at the time, had jobs as captains on day sailing charters. Now, with her accounting skills, Stacey has a “normal” job on St. Thomas and another conversation needs to be had with Jesse about his captaining plans post-Irma.
I’ve become good friends with Jesse and Stacey since we first met. Jesse was the only official captain on board Asante when we delivered her from St. Thomas to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He is a wealth of knowledge and I’m very glad that I have his direct phone number so that I can call or text him with any questions I may have!
This is their story of how they were able sail their 30 ft Catalina from Massachusetts to St. Thomas with their Aussie mix, Summer!
SV Smitty in a cold Boston Winter. This is what Jesse and Stacey had to deal with in the North
Apparently, they may have even lived on Smitty when she was iced in.
But they made it down the ICW, through the Bahamas, and on to much warmer climates! – S/V Smitty at Honeymoon Bay on Water Island
A few months later, I was on my way to charter a sailboat in the BVI, but I had to stop in St. Thomas first and say hello to Jesse, Stacey, Summer and S/V Smitty!
A Few Things You’ll Learn about Jesse and Stacey and their finances for sailing S/V Smitty South:
How their sailing dreams started with a trip on a Carnival cruise ship in 1996.
Exchanging vows in Magen’s Bay in 2002.
Learning about the cruising life from the captain of Heavenly Days.
Doing the bareboat charter thing for 10 days.
Sailing S/V Splash and S/V Smitty on the weekends, holidays, and summers in Boston.
Purchasing S/V Smitty
Behind the name of S/V Smitty
Their 4 year plan.
Selling everything and getting out of debt.
How much money they left Boston with to go sailing.
Upgrading S/V Smitty and why they do all of the maintenance themselves.
Jesse’s professional background as a geologist – before they left Boston.
Having a captain’s license and STCW training to work on charters in the Virgin Islands.
How much of their cruising kitty they had left when they arrived in the Virgin Islands.
Insuring S/V Smitty.
Upcoming maintenance projects.
And much more!

Sail Loot Podcast 055: A Sailor’s Story from the Eye of Hurricane Irma; Peter from Where The Coconuts Grow
A normal episode of the Sail Loot Podcast contains tips, advice, and stories about how others have been able to make a living on the water. This episode contains none of that.
This episode is purely to raise awareness about the impact of hurricanes this season on the Caribbean islands.
Peter had to get his wife, Jody, and his 3-month old, Brig, off of Tortola and out of the Caribbean by any means possible, but he had to stay on the island to secure his floating home, S/V Mary Christine.
All souls that remained in the islands were hoping that they eye of hurricane Irma would shift to the North of the British Virgin Islands. That didn’t happen. Tortola sustained a direct hit from hurricane Irma and the eye passed over the house where Peter, 4 of his friends, and his dog, Betsy, took shelter.
This is Peter’s story about surviving hurricane Irma.

Making plans for hurricane season.
Why Peter, Jody, and Brig couldn’t leave Tortola.
Having insurance during hurricane season and what that may or may not mean.
Where they decided to go for hurricane season.
How they were able to get Jody and Brig off of Tortola prior to hurricane Irma.
Their specific hurricane plan for their boat insurance.
Securing S/V Mary Christine, S/V Legato, and the Aristocat Charters Vessels.
Finding small, secure rooms and making key group decisions to survive through the eye walls of hurricane Irma.
The aftermath of hurricane Irma and the group’s missions to help those in need.
Their decision to move from their house in Belmont about 4 days after hurricane Irma.
All of the help from around the island that Peter didn’t see first hand.
The outpouring of help, love, and support from the States, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico. Note: Even the poorest island (and one of my favorites), Dominica, donated money, only to be destroyed by Maria a week later. Please don’t forget about Dominica.

Hurricane Irma is gone, but the devastation that she left behind will leave scars for a lifetime.
Jon and Tory are doing amazing work trying to heal as many of those scars as possible as quickly as possible. I can’t think of two better people to have organized SailorsHelping.org.
The islands get forgotten sometimes, especially by mainstream media and the federal governments that are supposed to watch over them.
In a way, I get it. Many have never had the opportunity to experience the beauty of St. Maarten, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos, or Cuba. They are islands in the middle of the Caribbean that have dealt with hurricane seasons since the beginning of time as we know it.
But I’m a sailor now – I can say that because I’ve run aground. I understand that the story of the destruction of biblical proportions that Irma left in the islands needs to be told. Who better to tell it and help coordinate recovery efforts than two people who founded The Tiziano Project which “provides community members in conflict, post-conflict, and underreported regions with the equipment, training, and affiliations necessary to report their stories and improve their lives.”
Jon and Tory are probably still running their businesses all at the same time. Awe-Some!

Sail Loot Podcast 053: Sail Me Om, Part 1
Jon and Tory are currently in Puerto Rico. I talked to them about 5 months ago when they were in the middle of the Bahamas. They started in New York City. They took 3 months to outfit their sailboat for cruising, headed North and then all the way South along the US East Coast before jumping across to the Bahamas.
Oh yea, and they’ve been building and running their own businesses at the same time.
I’d say that both of their businesses are in the marketing space, but trying to get an elevator pitch out of either of them was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and I don’t quite think that I succeeded.
I’ve talked to a lot of sailors on the Sail Loot Podcast who have downsized, saved, built sailing blogs, written for sailing magazines, found boat maintenance jobs, started charter companies, sailed part time while working during hurricane seasons, and found captain and/or crew jobs to maintain their cruising kitty. However, Jon and Tory’s businesses really have nothing to do with sailing. They have built and run their businesses from Scallywag the way that I originally envisioned a cruiser running a remote business.
In Part 1, we get into their story of purchasing and moving Scallywag across the US, moving onto Scallywag full time, and starting their own businesses.
Jon and Tory Grinding the Winches – this is not Scallywag…they were on charter. Finding a picture of both Tory and Jon sailing is quite difficult! ;)

Sail Loot Podcast 052: Teddy’s Sailing Money to Purchase Asante
In the last few episodes I told you that I purchased Asante for $117,500 and told the story of delivering her from St. Thomas to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I decided to take out a loan to purchase Asante, but I figured that I would explain how I came up with the funds to be able to say, “It’s sailboat buying time.”
This episode is a brief history. It’s less a history of the jobs that I’ve had and more about what I’ve done with the money that I’ve earned and how I’ve managed that money.
As far as jobs go, here’s a brief resume. I had a co-op job with McKenney’s, Inc while I was in college. McKenney’s is an HVAC and plumbing contractor based in the Atlanta, GA area. I graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a Mechanical Engineering degree in December of 2002. My first job out of school was as a flight test engineer for NAVAIR in Patuxent River, MD. Three years later I wanted to move back to Atlanta so I found a job as a contracted flight test engineer for the Air Force with MEI Technologies. Two years into that job the contract was almost up and there was talk of moving me to the middle of nowhere to do more flight testing. The middle of nowhere is usually where flight testing is done. I didn’t want to move to the middle of nowhere.
Along came a fraternity brother of mine from GA Tech. He had started his own Surgical Neurophysiology Consulting business three years earlier and had grown to the point where he had more business than he could handle on his own. He hired me, and 9 years later I’m still here, working with him in the Atlanta area.
By the way, as a Surgical Neurophysiologist, I monitor people’s nervous systems during brain surgery and spine surgery.
Oh, and I recently told him that I’m going sailing, but you’ll have to wait to hear about how that went on a future Sail Loot episode!
I started my career making $45,000 per year. I currently make 6 figures a year. The exact amount of money that I make every year varies depending on how many surgeries I help with every year so I can’t give you an exact number.
There you go! Now you can listen to the episode to figure out what I did with all of my money!
I’m looking over Lake Lanier prior to a Wednesday night race thinking, “Do I just post the transcript of this essay/episode here?” Here’s what I’ve come up with…comment below if you want me to share the entire transcript. If the overwhelming consensus is YES, I’ll post it here at a later time.
I hope you enjoy the show!

Sail Loot Podcast 051: Delivering Asante
In the last episode of the Sail Loot Podcast you learned the purchase price of Asante and the whirlwind of activity that was necessary to prep her for sailing her from St. Thomas to the Fort Lauderdale, FL area.
Actually, I’m not quite sure that “whirlwind” describes the chaos of my brain for those two days in St. Thomas. Now that I think about it, I was actually in St. Thomas for less than 48 hours. My flight landed at about 12:45pm on Thursday the 25th of May and we were casting off the lines at the fuel dock prior to noon on Saturday the 27th.
Provisions may not have been completely stowed and new fire extinguishers may not have been securely hung on their new mounts, but everything was onboard somewhere. The crew was ready. All seemed satisfied and ready to set sail.
We had studied wind and weather reports for weeks. We had a weather window and we had to take it on Saturday morning.
Thank you again to Jesse, Dave, Brett, and Brandy for making the trip with me. Thank you Stacey for all of your help in St. Thomas. I can’t say Asante Sana enough. Please visit the websites and blogs listed below. There are written accounts of the passage and even a cool video that Dave put together.
I hope you enjoy my detailed account of my maiden voyage on S/V Asante.

Sail Loot Podcast 050: Asante Delivery Part 1
I now…
Officially…
Own a sailboat!!!!!!
You may know by now that I purchased S/V Asante from Scott and Brittany Meyers at Windtraveler. They needed a little bigger boat and an extra cabin for their family of 3 girls that are 5 years old and under. As far as I was concerned, I just needed a boat.
I didn’t want just any sailboat. I had been to the sailboat shows and looked at all of the pretty new sailboats, and I had also seen them at the end of the show after thousands of people had trampled on them and the veneer laminate that covered whatever type of plywood was used for the interior had started peeling. To say that I shied away from current “production” sailboats would probably be an understatement.
Scrounging up half of a mil to drop on a new Beneteau or Leopard at the shows was also proving to be difficult.
Many people were consulted. Thank you Pam Wall, Wiley Sharp, and Kevin Barber. The question that was always asked was, “What are you going to use her for?”
My answer was always, “To cruise the world!” Actually, it was a little more detailed than that.
I wanted a cruising sailboat that I was able to island hop with, and cross oceans with. The first year or two might be spent checking out the Southeast coast of the United States and cruising the islands of the Caribbean. From there, I might just decide to cross the Panama Canal and cross to the islands of the South Pacific.
But you know…plans are written in sand at low tide.
So I wanted a cruising sailboat. I wanted a shallow enough draft so that I could gunkhole around the Caribbean, but a long enough keel to be able to cross oceans, a protected rudder (full skeg hung?), something that could be single handed but big enough for my 6′-1″, 215 lb frame, my 60 lb dog, a companion? (I haven’t found her yet, but there’s not a lot of sailors in Atlanta), and family and friends!!!
Before most others knew that they would be selling Asante, I found out that Scott and Brittany would soon be upgrading to a Tayana 48. I think I knew back in October of last year and it just so happened that I was chartering a catamaran for some fun island hopping of the BVIs during the first week of November.
I decided to spend the last night of my trip off of the catamaran that we had chartered and stay at the Nanny Cay Hotel. Staying off the boat allowed us to relax for one more afternoon at Nanny Cay, grab a hot, non-boat shower, and take our time getting to the ferry on Sunday morning. It also allowed me to meet the Windtraveler crew, casually check out Asante for the first time, and grab some cocktails with Scott and Brittany at the beach bar.
That’s when my research of the Brewer 44 started. I came to find out that they are quite sturdy ocean cruising vessels with a 4.5 ft draft with the centerboard up and a 9 ft draft with the centerboard down, a full modified keel, through bolted deck-to-hull joint, a huge Center Cockpit, and Asante was rigged for single-handing.
There was also the question of money, and whether or not I wanted to spend $130,000 on a 29 year old sailboat. After deliberating and checking out other sailboats, the answer was obviously yes, but we’ll get into more of those details later.
For now, enjoy Part 1 of the story about delivering Asante from St. Thomas to Florida!

Sail Loot Podcast 049: Jessie Saved Some Money to go Sailing on a Boat – With Katie, and now Luke
Jessica Zevalkink – better known as Jessie, Jess, JessieBrave, or Time Stopper – is the owner, operator, and creative director behind Katie And Jessie On A Boat and Jessie Takes Pictures. This podcast and these show notes are about Jessie, we find out some tidbits about Katie along the way, and the sailing adventures that they shared. However, as I started writing this I realized that I can’t seem to put Jessie’s name first when writing about both Katie and Jessie…see? It’s just not natural to me.
So…Jessie…when you read this just realize that to all of us out there who follow your awesome, original, honest, raw, inspiring, gritty, beautiful, and (all of the complimentary adjectives that I can’t think of because I’m an engineer not a writer)…you named the blog Katie and Jessie On A Boat. Therefore, when I am writing about both of you, Katie’s name will be listed first even though you’re the force behind the pictures and sailing stories.
You’ll hear a little bit about Luke, Jessie’s fiancé, in this episode of the Sail Loot Podcast too. I had the opportunity to meet Katie, Jessie, and Luke on a rainy day at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in October of 2016. We all exchanged contact information, but I got the chance to re-connect with Jessie at the Strictly Sail Miami Boat Show in February of 2017.
The story of Katie and Jessie getting the idea and following through with the amazing adventure of sailing America’s Great Loop is awesome. Coming up next for Jessie is the adventure of sailing across the Atlantic on S/V Desiree with Luke. Jessie shares her stories, how she and Katie saved their sailing money and stopped to make some along the way, saving for her next adventure, and all of the numbers and intricacies.
All credit for all photos below goes to Jessie Zevalkink – I think (Jessie if that isn’t true…let me know?). The featured image may have been taken by Katie. I highly suggest checking out Jessie’s Instagram feed @jessiebrave, Katie’s Instagram feed @katiegirllllll and the picture book page on the Katie And Jessie On A Boat website. All of these pictures were “borrowed” from those sites, with Jessie’s permission of course. It was certainly difficult finding a picture with only Jessie in it.

Sail Loot Podcast 048: Neil Davies Sails to Cuba and Works Remotely for Sailing Money
Neil and his wife, Janet, left England and moved over to the United States in 1989. Neil’s job as a Civil-Environmental Engineer brought them and their 2 daughters over to the Atlanta, GA area. Neil does consulting engineering work for his current firm in order to save up some sailing money and do some part-time cruising with Janet and the rest of his family.
Neil and Janet had their son, their third child, and did some sailing on Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona while living in the Atlanta area. S/V Midnight Sun II, a 1997 Hunter 42 Passage, was located at Sunrise Cove Marina on Lake Lanier when Neil and Janet purchased her.
Part-time sailing and cruising adventures on S/V Midnight Sun II started when the Davies family moved her to the Atlantic Coast in Brunswick, GA – by truck and trailer – and started sailing her South.
In this episode of the Sail Loot Podcast we discuss how Neil is able to take some longer vacations, and do some part-time, remote work from S/V Midnight Sun II in order to keep some sailing money in the cruising kitty, enjoy life in the Pensacola, FL area, and be chairman of the Pensacola to Havana race!

Sail Loot Podcast 047: Nica Waters, Go Simple, Go Now
I met Nica Watters at the 2016 U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD. I was walking around looking for people that I knew, and I figured that I would find Jamie and Behan at the Lin and Larry Parday Books (L & L Parday Books) booth promoting the book that Behan helped write, Voyaging With Kids: A Guide to Family Life Afloat.
Low and behold, Jamie and Behan were right where I expected them to be. Jamie had his S/V Delos t-shirt on. They were answering the questions of a couple that was planning on cruising with their kids in a few years and Behan noticed me standing there, listening to their answers with a big smile on my face.
Nica was huddled under the tent with the rest of us, staying out of the rain, and helping to promote the books of Lin & Larry Parday and a mantra of “go simple, go now.” She and Behan are also admins for the Women Who Sail Facebook Group. They hadn’t actually ever met in person before October 2016.
Jamie and Behan asked about my boat search and my cruising plans. Of course, Nica overheard all of this and was a little concerned when I started talking about the possibilities of a 45ft sailboat…for only me and Barley, my awesome dog. She had to stop me, and start explaining the “go simple, go now” mantra and how her and her family of four set sail on their 28ft Bristol Channel Cutter, S/V Calypso.

Sail Loot Podcast 046: Captain Randy Smith With Sail Libra and Orange Beach Sailing Adventures
I want to be back on the water sailing Libra wherever she’s going. Captain Randy’s prediction was correct. As soon as we pulled into the dock at the Strictly Sail Miami Boat show, I wanted to get out on the water with Sail Libra.
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely wanted to go to the Miami Boat show, and I had an amazing time there, but the voyage there on S/V Libra was an AWESOME experience. I’ve still got a smile on my face thinking about the adventure.
It was always my plan to go to the Strictly Sail Miami Boat show. I had some sky miles so I was able to grab my flights for “free”, but then I talked to Captain Ryan in Episode 044 of the Sail Loot Podcast. That’s when I decided that maybe I should jump on the trip on S/V Libra and sail to the boat show instead! I am so glad that I made the decision to jump on board.
I have to give some props to Annie Dike at Have Wind Will Travel. After all, she’s the one that emailed me a few months ago and said that Captain Ryan Rayfield had an amazing story that I might want to share. Then the small world of sailing and cruising started opening up.
I went down to charter a sailboat with some friends in the BVI and had the opportunity to meet Scott and Brittany from Windtraveler and Aristocat Charters. The next thing you know I’m talking to Ryan Rayfield for a podcast while seeing updates on Facebook that Captain Randy is helping deliver Scott and Brittany’s new sailboat across the Atlantic. A little over a month later I’m meeting Captain Ryan, Captain Randy, Annie, Phillip, and the rest of the Pensacola to Miami Sail Libra crew – Andy, Billy, Sophia, and Jeff – for dinner and drinks at a bar in Pensacola the night before we take off on our trip across the Gulf of Mexico.
When the Sail Loot Podcast started I said that in the future, my plan is to take the podcast cruising with me. I try to envision the conversations that I have like we’re sitting in the cockpit of a sailboat chatting about how the heck we were lucky enough to be there, what our costs were, what our budget was, how we are able to afford it, and the opportunities that presented themselves along the way to find our sailing money and get us to the point where we were living a life rich in experiences.
I got to live one of those amazing experiences sailing across the Gulf of Mexico to the Strictly Sail Miami Boat show and sitting down in the cockpit of S/V Libra with Captain Randy chatting about how he was able to make a living doing something that he’s passionate about…sailing.
S/V Libra the night that I met her.

A Sunset over the Gulf from S/V Libra
Andy, Teddy, and Sophia taking a Noonsite.
Teddy at the bow of S/V Libra, Annie and Phillip catching some rays, Andy in deep conversation and Captain Ryan…polishing some stainless.
It was sunset and calm so Annie decided to get up in the silks, Captain Ryan decided to capture it on the drone, and then Andy heard the rod bend at the stern of S/V Libra.
Some of the freshest Tuna I’ve ever eaten.

They called me Flava Teddy
I’m really just strapping a sail to the bow so it won’t fall overboard. Awesome pic though!
The final sunset on our Gulf crossing on S/V Libra to Miami
Sunrise over the Atlantic on our final morning on S/V Libra
The sunrise reflecting off of the Miami skyline
We made it! It’s time to Par-tay! Note: not to worry, she didn’t have any…but the rest of us did! Oh, and we don’t drink on passage.
A Few Things You’ll Learn about Captain Randy Smith, Sail Libra, and Orange Beach Sailing Adventures in this episode:
How Captain Randy went from growing up on a wheat farm in Wellington, Kansas to a sailing captain.
Captain Randy’s first sailboat in San Diego and how much it cost.
How much he sold his first sailboat for (it was more than he bought it for).
How Captain Randy has been able to make sailing affordable.
Learning to sail and learning about deals on sailboats during Wednesday night beer can races.
Happy Valentine’s Day Kim!!!
Making a deal with himself to never live somewhere where the average temperature was less than his age.
Captain Randy’s plans to play music at tiki bars.
Randy’s jobs before he became “Captain” Randy.
Construction sales and elevating homes post-Katrina with Orleans Shoring.
Putting corporate America on sabbatical on S/V Attitude with his brother and nephew.

Purchasing S/V Attitude
Moving S/V Attitude to Bear Point Harbor Marina
Captain Randy wants a free bushwacker!
Meeting Captain Bo Cordle and setting up some charters on S/V Lattitude and S/V Attitude with help from Captain Ryan
Why Bo and Randy set their prices a little higher than Captan Ryan’s
The mother of necessity. Bo was moving on to start his sailing adventure and Captain Ryan was too busy and overbooked at Orange Beach Sailing Adventures. This was the perfect opportunity for Captain Randy.
Why Captain Randy loves taking people out sailing with Orange Beach Sailing Adventures and Sail Libra.
Teaching people to be self-sufficient on a sailboat on S/V Libra.
The fantastic people that you’ll meet on a passage on S/V Libra. I had never met the 8 other people on board. I’ve got 8 new friends!
Captain Randy helps with deliveries of sailboats when Sail Libra isn’t on a passage.
And much more!

Sail Loot Podcast 045: Shooting The Breeze about our Sailing Money with Jeffrey Wettig
Jeffrey Wettig, host of the Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast, and I have been talking via email and Facebook for a few years. We were finally able to meet in person at the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis this past October. I also got to meet his better half, Nora, and share some grub and a few brews with the two of them.
Recently on the Sail Loot Podcast, I’ve been talking to a lot of people about sailing businesses and very big sailboats. Jeffrey wanted to make sure that I wasn’t forgetting about all of the other sailors out there that aren’t cruising the islands or starting a charter business. There are thousands of sailors that are working during the week while making sure that they are sailing on the weekends and in the Wednesday night beer can races.
Needless to say, this podcast is a little bit different from a lot of the other Sail Loot Podcasts. Jeffrey and I have become good friends. Therefore, it’s a lot like the two of us just sat down to shoot the breeze about our personal sailing finances. I talk a lot more than usual about where I’m at in my process of purchasing a sailboat and Jeffrey explains a lot about how and why he’s on his third sailboat, a Paceship 26 named Pegasus.
Lee Cumberland, Rachel Cumberland, Teddy J, and Jeffrey Wettig at Isbj0rn at the US Sailboat show.
A Few Things You’ll Learn about Jeffrey Wettig and Shooting The Breeze in this episode:

Jeffrey’s dream boat and where he stands on the purchase
The possibility of getting a small loan for a sailboat
Purchasing his house
Purchasing his sailboats
When Jeffrey started to sail
Being a member of his yacht club and the associated costs
The costs of maintaining his sailboat
How to sail for free
How you’re always learning something new when you go out sailing
