EP #47: Why One Mistake Feels Massive: The Emotional Battle Inside Every Athlete

In the world of sports, mistakes are inevitable, yet their emotional toll on athletes can be significant. In the latest episode of the SPMI Podcast, Patrick Alban dives deep into the psychological reasons behind why athletes struggle to cope with their mistakes, shedding light on a topic that resonates with athletes, parents, and coaches alike.   Main Content:   Section 1: The Emotional Rollercoaster of Mistakes In episode 47, Patrick emphasizes the emotional turmoil that athletes experience after making mistakes. He notes that many athletes transition from a calm state to panic or shutdown in mere moments after a misstep. This reaction often stems from deeper issues related to identity and self-worth. Athletes may unconsciously tie their performance to their self-value, leading to an overwhelming fear of inadequacy when they fail. For example, instead of thinking, "That shot was bad," an athlete might think, "I am bad." This mindset creates a visceral reaction that can affect their performance on the field.   Section 2: The Role of Perfectionism Another critical factor discussed is perfectionism and unrealistic standards. Patrick explains that athletes often bring a mindset from academic success, where mistakes can have immediate negative consequences, into their sports performance. This creates a sense of control that is often shattered in unpredictable sports environments. Athletes may catastrophize their mistakes, spiraling into anxiety and rigidity that hampers their ability to recover and learn from errors.   Section 3: Fear and Pressure Deeply rooted fears also play a substantial role in how athletes react to mistakes. Many athletes harbor fears of judgment and embarrassment, which can feel magnified in competitive settings. Patrick highlights how the brain is wired to protect us from perceived danger, leading athletes to overreact to mistakes due to a fear of exposure or ridicule. This fear creates a cycle of negative self-talk and anxiety that can be debilitating.   Section 4: Conditioning and Old Programming Furthermore, Patrick discusses how early conditioning around mistakes can influence an athlete's emotional responses. Many athletes grow up in environments where mistakes are punished, leading to a fear-based approach to performance. This conditioning can leave lasting imprints, causing athletes to relive past criticisms every time they make a mistake. Patrick encourages parents and coaches to recognize this pattern, emphasizing that awareness can pave the way for positive change.   Conclusion: Key Takeaways Understanding the emotional landscape of mistakes in sports is crucial for athletes, parents, and coaches. Mistakes can trigger deep-seated fears related to identity, perfectionism, and past conditioning. By fostering an environment that emphasizes growth and learning rather than punishment, we can help athletes build resilience and improve their mental game. Recognizing these emotional triggers is the first step toward empowering athletes to navigate their challenges more effectively. In this episode, Patrick Alban discusses how athletes can conquer fear, doubts, and adversity to achieve peak performance. He outlines the common challenges athletes face, their reactions to these challenges, and the mistakes they often make. Patrick emphasizes the importance of powerful psychological modalities such as verbalization, visualization, journaling, and exposure in overcoming these challenges. He shares success stories of athletes who have transformed their performance and mindset through these techniques, highlighting the profound impact of sports psychology on both athletic and personal development.   Takeaways:   Athletes face various challenges when starting new training regimens. Moving away from home can significantly impact an athlete's performance. Injuries can lead to emotional struggles and affect performance. Unfair treatment by coaches can lead to negative self-talk and resentment. Not getting enough playing time can be a major source of frustration for athletes. Competing against peers for a position can create anxiety and pressure. Managing a losing streak is a common issue for many athletes. Parent coaching dynamics can complicate an athlete's experience. Verbalization helps athletes articulate their struggles and build confidence. Visualization prepares athletes mentally for competition and reduces anxiety.   Chapters:   00:00 Conquering Fear and Adversity in Sports 09:11 Common Reactions to Athletic Challenges 12:03 Mistakes Athletes Make in Tough Situations 17:45 Effective Modalities for Overcoming Challenges 34:00 Success Stories and Transformations   To learn more on how to get started training your mental game with SPMI, please visit the company website at www.gospmi.com Sign up for a free 15-minute consultation at www.gospmi.com/contact You may also reach out to us at 786.350.1554 or toll free at 1.800.601.0176

EP #45: Believing is Seeing - The Science Behind a Champion's Mindset

In this episode, Patrick Alban discusses the critical role of belief in athletic performance. He emphasizes that belief should precede achievement, challenging the common notion of 'seeing is believing.' Through scientific insights and real-world examples, he illustrates how a strong belief system can enhance performance, resilience, and even physiological responses. The conversation also explores the importance of environment, vision versus fear, and the necessity of facing challenges to build a robust belief system in athletes. Takeaways Believing is essential for athletes to reach their potential. The belief system influences performance and recovery. Confidence can reduce stress and improve outcomes. Beliefs can physically affect hormone levels and performance. Self-efficacy leads to greater effort and resilience. Positive beliefs can enhance pain tolerance and recovery. Athletes must act on their beliefs to solidify them. Challenging environments can strengthen belief systems. Vision must be fed to grow, while fear must be minimized. Ep #29: 10 Costly Mistakes Athletes Make

In this episode, Patrick shares with his listeners the 10 costly mistakes athletes make. The first question to ask is why are athletes making these costly mistakes? We find that first and foremost, many of these costly mistakes may be due to a lack of awareness. This is why this podcast is necessary to shed light on the importance of checking in on your own mental game. But secondly, many of these mistakes are due to mental and emotional struggles and the maladaptive responses to them. Such mental and emotional turmoils often lead to avoidance behaviors. These emotional struggles include an inability or perception of lack of ability in dealing with anxiety, worry, frustration, unhappiness, and overall, fear. Ironically, many of these behavioral mistakes are counter intuitive to their original intentions of seeking out relief which often results in continued emotional suffering. So let’s get into the 10 costly mistakes that athletes make. Before continuing, once again this podcast is not meant to trigger anyone and is not geared towards calling out anyone in particular. Also, there are far more then just 10. But here are the 10 mistakes that we will cover in today’s podcast.   1. Over-training (not taking breaks, vacations, mentally detaching completely from sport). 2. Social Media - Time spent, lowering attention focus, delaying long-term goal achievement, comparison (sadness, frustration, jealousy, envy, depression) 3. Electronics - Video games, checking phones during practice (usually multiple times.) 4. Lack of Communication - Not speaking to support team about struggles, asking for what they want, etc. 5. Not Enough Structure: Routines, sleep, nutrition, fitness 6. Staying with the wrong coach for too long: (Reciprocity effect) or Switching coaches/organizations too often: 7. Not competing enough (waiting for the “right time”) 8. Worrying about feeling anxious 9. Trying to be perfect  Leads to Obsessions/more suffering (winning, ranking, destination, other peoples expectations) 10. Choosing what’s easy (escaping necessary discomfort) (training hard, fitness, competitions, see this in college institutions)** Leads to extortion tactics.   For a limited time only we are offering a free 14-day trial!   SPMI+ is an all-inclusive athlete mental training membership for athletes who are looking to strengthen their mental game and achieve long-lasting improvement in their sport.
