Season 3: Audio Journey #1- The Role STEM Plays in our Elections: The Technology of Voting

We are back for Season 3! As the nation heads to polls on Tuesday November 6th, my brother and I discuss the technology behind voting and the elections industry. From websites and mobile apps that provide users with everything from voter registration tutorials to comprehensive breakdowns of the candidates and races on your local ballots; digital technology has enhanced the scope and knowledge of our electorate. While the modernization of electronic voting machines has helped to enhance the efficiency of the voting process in many areas, the security of these voting systems has become a critical issue facing democracies around the world. We touch on these points and more in this special Election Day season premier. Season 2: #Bonus Episode of Gratitude featuring The STEM Parents

Thank you to everyone who has followed and supported our podcast over these last few years! We hope you enjoy the recent block of 7 episodes we posted, which marks the conclusion of our second full season of the podcast. Since we are coming off of a long hiatus, we wanted to include this special episode just as a way of summarizing the journey we have been on for the last year as we have striven to deliver these unique conversations about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related topics. This is also a very special episode because, in what was perhaps the highlight of our time doing this podcast, we end this episode with a short portion of an interview we did with our parents earlier this year. Our parents were instrumental in introducing us to STEM and laying the groundwork that allowed us to get our engineering degrees, and it was absolutely fascinating to listen to them break down the decisions they made regarding our education and upbringing. It was these decisions that ultimately led to our pursuit and passion for all things STEM. This is the passion that we will continue to share with you, our listeners, for many years to come. Season 2: Audio Journey #14- The Importance of Public Speaking & Presentation Skills to Careers in STEM feat. Nei...

One of the main reasons we created this podcast is our belief that in today’s multimedia age creating the vibrant STEM workforce of the next generation is directly related to our ability to improve how STEM careers and STEM concepts are communicated.  That is why for our season 2 finale we are so pleased to bring you a conversation we had earlier this year with public speaking and presentation trainer Mr. Neil Thompson. Neil is a biomedical engineer and registered professional engineer  with years  of experience product development field, who founded his own public speaking training program specifically geared towards STEM professionals called Teach the Geek to Speak. Neil has an amazing perspective on the value of public speaking skills in the field of STEM. So, whether you’re a teacher, student, or industry professional; this conversation has some great takeaways for you.         Teach the Geek to Speak: https://teachthegeek.thinkific.com/courses/teach-the-geek-to-speak Neil Thompson: http://www.slide-talk.com/how-a-geek-learned-to-speak-an-interview-with-engineer-neil-thompson/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/neilithompson/ Melissa Marshall: https://www.ted.com/talks/melissa_marshall_talk_nerdy_to_me https://www.presentyourscience.com/ Visit our website: http://stembrotherspodcast.com/ Subscribe to the show on Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=150450&refid=stpr Subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-stem-brothers-podcast/id1154590006 Please email questions and comments to: stembros@gmail.com Connect with us on Twitter: @stembrospod Connect with us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stembrotherspodcast/

Season 2: Audio Journey #13- STEAM: The Role of the Arts in STEM Career Development featuring Na’Toria Marketing

Two of the most important features to any product are its form and function. From consumer electronics to fashion, how a product looks as well as how easy it is to use, is just as important as the mathematical and scientific principles that go into designing and creating that product. Even if it works well, a product that lacks an aesthetically pleasing look is likely to have limited success. Therefore, in addition to stimulating our imaginations and making our world aesthetically pleasing, art and creativity also have practical commercial purposes in the world of STEM. This is among the many reasons why there is a lot of momentum for expanding the STEM educational paradigm to STEAM (Science,Technology, Engineering, ART and Mathematics).  Joining us in this episode to discuss STEAM, along with a range of other related topics, are the principals of Na’Toria Marketing & Design Solutions; a marketing and design firm that specializes in website and social media design. Hear Natasha and Victoria give their valuable insights on how they leverage technology and their creative arts backgrounds to help their clients reach their goals. Season 2: Audio Journey #12- Talking STEM Careers and Star Wars

Every release of a Star wars film presents an excellent opportunity to engage in some really insightful STEM conversations. The power of Star Wars as a STEM teaching tool comes from examining the technological innovations used to make these movies, and the STEM related careers involved with these innovations. The end credits of a visual effects heavy film like Star Wars are a smorgasbord of STEM terms and careers. These credits are an exciting place to start any STEM career discussion.  My brother and I are big Star Wars fans, and this episode features a brief conversation he and I had last December after going to see Star Wars Episode VIII The Last Jedi. We wanted to share this discussion with you because it serves as an example of the kind of conversation you can use to introduce young people to STEM careers. The story of how the creators of Star Wars used STEM to advance what is possible in the making of film, is as engaging as the fictional narrative of Star Wars itself.  We cover this and more during our conversation. Season 2: Audio Journey #11- Crushing Year One of Your Engineering Degree Program and Other Study Skills Strategies f...

A college degree in a STEM major is a necessary gateway to many exciting and fulfilling STEM related careers. However, many college students who start on the path of a STEM major, particularly in engineering, end up not completing that degree. One of the reasons for this is that many students enter the first year of STEM programs unprepared for the academic rigors of the curriculum. From the intimidating and impersonal feeling of the 200 plus student lecture hall classes at many large universities, to the academic intensity of courses colloquially known as “weed out” classes; first year STEM students encounter many challenges that can derail them from their ultimate goal. This is why it is extremely important that students pursuing STEM majors have an effective set of study skills and strategies they can implement to overcome these obstacles.  These academic rigors demand a disciplined and systematic approach to studying and approaching how you go about matriculating through the curriculum. In this episode we speak with the Associate Dean of Students & Strategic Programs for the Villanova University College of Engineering, and author of Seven Secrets of How to Study, Dr. Stephen Jones,  and get his take on useful study skills strategies for 1st year STEM students.             Dr. Stephen Jones Education Expert: https://www.drstephenjones.net/ https://delblogger.com/study-tips-for-success-from-high-school-to-college/ Visit our website: http://stembrotherspodcast.com/ Subscribe to the show on Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=150450&refid=stpr Subscribe to the show on Apple Podcasts: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-stem-brothers-podcast/id1154590006 Please email questions and comments to: stembros@gmail.com Connect with us on Twitter: @stembrospod Connect with us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stembrotherspodcast/

Season 2: Audio Journey #8- Technology-Focused Startups and Economic Development- A STEM Conversation Live From Water...

We return to close out our second season by bringing you the first installment of a two-part conversation we had taking a look at the role that technology-focused startups, and other STEM related businesses, play in the career readiness training and workforce development of the youth in the communities where these businesses operate. In February of 2018 we had the opportunity to moderate a panel discussion that took place in front of a live audience at the offices of the digital design and marketing firm Penji located in the Waterfront Lab Coworking facility in Camden, New Jersey, where a group of non-profit organizations and startup companies are leading efforts to revitalize the city by attracting technology-focused start-ups, and other companies to the city. The panel participants included the founder and CEO of the economic development organization Waterfront Ventures, the Executive Director of the technology training and youth development non-profit organization Hopeworks Camden, as well as two local area youth who have been successful participants in the youth development initiatives these two organizations have been leading. Technology and entrepreneurship are two powerful drivers of economic progress. You can look at examples from all over world and see that the cities and urban areas that house a mix of well-established STEM related companies, as well as a vibrant entrepreneurial scene, offer the citizens living in these areas positive economic and vocational opportunities. A key amenity that attracts both established companies and start-up enterprises to an area, is the access to a strong talent pool that these companies can tap, in order to help grow their businesses. With that being the case, we wanted to explore ways companies can partner with schools, parents, non-profits and other community organizations, in an effort to create systems that help get local youth get prepared to be part of the employment and entrepreneurial opportunities that these businesses generate. Take a listen to this insightful and engaging conversation. This is our re-introduction/pre-launch episode. My brother and I use this episode to clarify the refined mission of the podcast, explain why we decided to create it. We also set the stage for the larger long-term journey that we are embarking on through this podcast. Please join us as we embark on our journey to bring to you wide-ranging conversations covering all corners of the STEM spectrum. We are excited to have you on board! The national conversation around improved STEM education and STEM career readiness has been at the forefront of education and workforce development efforts over the last 10-15 years. While this emphasis has created numerous resources that are extremely useful, we believe that there is still a gap between what many young people are exposed to in science and math classrooms, and what it truly means to be a STEM professional. We feel that there needs to be more resources that help young people associate STEM learning and careers with their own organically developed personal career goals and missions. There are so many different ways to use STEM, and the only limitation to the kind of contribution a young person can make through the usage of STEM, is defined by their own awareness and imagination, or lack thereof. That’s where The STEM Brothers Podcast comes in! We believe that conversations involving STEM, and the people who use it and create with STEM tools, is a conversation that needs to be regular and ongoing. Our feeling is that the regular exposure to these kinds of conversations will shift the paradigm of the standard STEM conversation from one that focuses primarily on the linear progression from classroom to career; into dynamic conversations that highlight the who, where, and why behind the STEM based contributions that define the various aspects of our lives and the world around us. We can think of no better vehicle than the podcast medium to catalog these conversations and preserve them as resources for educators, parents, and students. The STEM INSIDERS Episode 1: Infrastructure and You

Welcome to the inaugural episode of the STEM INSIDERS Podcast! The mission of this show is to highlight the important role Science, Technology, Engineering,Mathematics (STEM) related careers play in some of the world’s most important current events and public policy issues. Before we address our main topic for this episode, we share some words from President Barrack Obama that come from a panel discussion held at the 2016 White House Frontiers Conference. We felt this statement from the president was incredibly valuable in helping to reaffirm the importance STEM literacy to our society. For this first episode of The STEM INSIDERS Podcast we take a look at our nation’s infrastructure. Our bridges, roads, tunnels, our water and electrical systems are just some of the many areas that make up our country’s infrastructure. A reliable and modern infrastructure is vital to the nation’s economy, as well as to our health and safety. Given its importance to our way of life, our nation’s infrastructure is in need of wide scale modernization. To help us discuss this important issue we are joined by civil engineer Angelena Edwards; as well as educator, entrepreneur and engineer Dr. Nehemiah Mabry (@_STEMedia). Check out the following websites to learn more about the topics and guests from this episode: Here are links to the ASCE’s Infrastructure Report Card as well as some important insight into their analysis of our nation’s infrastructure: http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/ http://news.asce.org/asce-report-estimates-failure-to-act-on-infrastructure-costs-families-3400-a-year/ http://www.asce.org/infrastructure/ You can learn more about Dr. Nehemiah J Mabry and his company at: http://stemedia.org/ You can learn more about the Pre-College Engineering Education Act (H.R. 5679): https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/114/hr5679/text You can learn more about NSBE here: https://www.nsbe.org/ Here are some other great videos about the importance of this #infrastructure issue: https://youtu.be/9BshxkR4iKo https://youtu.be/ufpHETh6KcA https://youtu.be/Wpzvaqypav8
