Raising Girls When the World Still Doesn’t Believe Them | NYC Public Advocate Jumaane D. Williams

What happens when the issues you’ve spent your life fighting for suddenly become the world your children have to live in? In this episode, Katia sits down with Jumaane D. Williams, New York City Public Advocate, activist, husband, and proud girl dad, for a deeply personal conversation about how fatherhood has changed the way he sees his work, himself, and the world he hopes to leave his daughters. Jumaane opens up about having to explain racism to his daughter at just three years old, intentionally surrounding his girls with representation that reflects their beauty, and raising them to understand both the realities of the world and their own power within it. He also shares his family’s harrowing experience with cervical cancer, pregnancy, premature birth and the NICU—and why that experience reinforced for him the importance of listening to and believing Black women in healthcare. The conversation also turns inward as Jumaane reflects on therapy, fatherhood, male vulnerability, positive masculinity and breaking generational trauma—including his belief that successful parenting isn’t about making no mistakes, but making new ones instead of passing the same wounds from one generation to the next. A vulnerable conversation about fatherhood, racism, Black maternal health, raising daughters, representation, masculinity, mental health and healing generational trauma.

Hit by a 110 MPH Foul Ball, 16 Weeks Pregnant | Michelle Margaux (Part 2)

She got hit by a 110 mph foul ball to the head. She was 16 weeks pregnant. And nobody at the ballpark knew either thing. In Part 2 of this conversation, Katia Reguero Lindor continues her conversation with Emmy Award-winning sports reporter and SNY host Michelle Margaux. Michelle opens up about how motherhood made her more confident at work but less confident in other parts of her life, why she and her husband are already planning for how they'll parent differently, and the moment she had to compartmentalize her father's declining health while asking players about their home run celebrations, five minutes apart. She also shares the story behind one of the most surreal moments of her career: getting hit in the head by a line drive foul ball while 16 weeks pregnant, hiding both the injury and the pregnancy from everyone around her in the moment, and going back to work anyway. Michelle and Katia talk about privacy in the social media age, letting go of the instinct to protect your kids from everything, and the advice Michelle's dad gave her that changed the entire trajectory of her life. Interviewing Athletes, Raising a Son, and Everything In Between with Michelle Margaux (Part 1)

Can you become a mother without losing the woman you were before? In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, Emmy Award-winning sports reporter and SNY host Michelle Margaux joins Katia Lindor for an honest discussion about working motherhood, identity, ambition, partnership, and raising boys. Michelle opens up about the vulnerability she never expected from becoming a mom, the pressure women face to choose between career and motherhood, and why no one seems to ask fathers whether they’re afraid of “losing themselves” to parenthood. She also shares the behind-the-scenes reality of balancing a demanding career in sports media with a husband who works an opposite schedule—and how their partnership makes it all possible. As a woman working in a male-dominated industry, Michelle reflects on how those experiences are shaping the son she hopes to raise: one who leads with empathy, challenges stereotypes, and stands up for what’s right.

Garrison Hayes on Raising Boys, Positive Masculinity & Parenting with Hope (Pt. 2)

How do we raise children who are compassionate, courageous, and prepared to make the world better than they found it? In Part 2 of Katia Lindor's conversation with award-winning journalist and creator Garrison Hayes, the discussion turns to one of parenting's greatest responsibilities: the values we model every day. Together, they explore raising boys in the age of social media, confronting harmful ideas about masculinity, and why emotional vulnerability may be one of the greatest gifts a father can give his son. Katia and Garrison also reflect on the fears that come with parenting in today's political climate, the importance of teaching history, the power of representation, and why hope is an act of courage. Love > Hate | Mic Flip with Katia & Marina

Katia sits down with her producer, Marina, to reflect on the most meaningful lessons from the season’s conversations. Together, they revisit the powerful themes that emerged from interviews with activists, educators, public service officials, journalists, and parents navigating complex social realities. From dismantling rigid gender norms and raising emotionally healthy boys, to modeling activism for the next generation, this episode explores what it means to parent with intention in an increasingly polarized world. Katia opens up about how her own upbringing shaped her values, the responsibility that comes with privilege, and why empathy—especially the kind that extends beyond our own communities—is essential to raising compassionate children. Along the way, the conversation revisits key moments from the season’s guests: immigrant advocates using storytelling as resistance, journalists reporting on difficult truths while protecting their families, mothers navigating invisible labor and caregiving, and philosophers reminding us that ethics is a responsibility we all share. Ultimately, this episode asks a simple but profound question: What values are we passing on to the next generation—and how do we model them every day? If this season has shown anything, it’s that parenting doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It lives at the intersection of culture, policy, community, and the deeply human work of raising thoughtful, empathetic people. - Don’t forget to FOLLOW the podcast on Instagram and TikTok.

The Ethics of Parenting: A Philosophy Professor on Truth, Values, and Modern Fatherhood

What happens when an ethics professor becomes a parent? In this deeply personal conversation, Katia reunites with her former college professor, Dr. J. Colin McQuillan, to explore the intersection of philosophical thinking and real-world parenting. As chair of the Philosophy Department at St. Mary’s University, Colin has spent his career examining ethical frameworks and moral theory. But becoming a father to his six-year-old daughter brought challenges that no textbook could prepare him for—from navigating the unpredictability of childhood to confronting the relentless nature of 24/7 caregiving. This episode tackles the big questions parents face today: How do we raise ethically grounded children in an age of misinformation and political polarization? What role do fathers play in reshaping traditional gender roles and emotional labor in families? And how can we teach our children to care about truth and justice when the world often feels overwhelming? Through candid reflections on everything from his daughter’s unexpected love of fashion to the deeper struggles of teaching children right from wrong, Colin offers a philosophical perspective on parenting that is both intellectually rigorous and refreshingly honest. Whether you’re a parent grappling with how to talk to your kids about difficult topics, an educator thinking about moral development, or simply someone interested in ethics and family life, this conversation will challenge you to think more deeply about the values we pass on to the next generation. --- Don’t forget to FOLLOW the podcast on Instagram and TikTok. SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel for all the unapparent content you never knew you needed.  The Unaparent Podcast is a Studio Dama production. Challenging the System: A Conversation with Dr. Stuart Fischbein (Part 1)

In this two-part conversation, Katia sits down with Dr. Stuart Fischbein—better known as Dr. Stu—a board-certified obstetrician turned home birth advocate, author, educator, and co-host of the Birthing Instincts podcast. In Part 1, they unpack the deeply human and political layers of childbirth in America—from informed consent and medical gaslighting to how birthing has become a business model rather than a health model. Dr. Stu shares his unconventional journey from practicing hospital-based obstetrics to becoming a pioneering advocate for midwifery care, breech and twin home births, and individualized birth choices. Together, they challenge the fear-based narratives and rigid protocols that dominate modern maternity care, and invite listeners to ask: Who benefits? Who profits? And who suffers when we silence critical questions around birth? This episode is not just for parents—it’s for anyone who believes in bodily autonomy, birth equity, and reclaiming our right to question the systems that shape our most sacred life experiences. 🎧 Listen now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.
