The Unresolved Podcast

In March of 2014, Chase Massner was a struggling Iraqi war veteran with a young family to provide for. He was working at a convenience store in Kennesaw, Georgia, a town not too far out of Atlanta. After an argument with his wife, he went to spend some time with a nearby friend, and after spending the night, disappeared without a trace. In this episode, I speak to noteworthy true crime host Nancy Grace herself, and explore some of the theories that may have led Chase Massner to disappear - or to simply run away.

In the early 1980s, Adelaide police were struggling to find a suspect after the bodies of five young men were found - each showing signs of sexually abuse before their murders. But they finally zeroed in on a suspect: a man named Bevan Spencer von Einem. He remains the only man convicted in the crime, but police are still convinced that he did not act alone. Their scope reached out into the associates of von Einem's that they think were involved in some way. This unknown, mysterious group has been etched in Australian history as "the Family," and if they exist, they have escaped justice for over three decades. Part two of two.

In 2122, the USCSS Nostromo was on a regular, run-of-the-mill freight run when it picked up a distress call from a nearby planet, catalogued as LV-426. However, things then went dark, and no survivors escaped... with the exception of the aptly-named Ellen Ripley, who would surface again decades later.

On June 17th, 1979, Australian teenager Alan Barnes would go missing after trying to hitchhike home from a friend's house. Roughly a week later, his body would be found, having endured serious sexual assaults before his murder. This would begin a dark and tumultuous chapter of South Australian history known as the Family Murders. Part one of two.

On September 19th, 1961, Betty and Barney Hill - an interracial couple from Portsmouth, New Hampshire - were returning from a vacation when they spotted an odd sight in the sky. After pursuing the odd light for a time, and then being pursued themselves, Betty and Barney's memory faded. They lost all recollection for a few hours... or so they claim. This is the story of Betty and Barney Hill and the extraordinary claims that would go on to dominate the rest of their lives.

On December 31st, the mother of Yasuko Miyazawa opened the door to her daughter's family home, only to discover a house of horrors. This idyllic, four-piece family had been butchered overnight, for seemingly no reason at all. And what's worse: the killer had left behind a treasure trove of evidence, but has escaped justice for close to two decades now.

This is a brief update about episodes 7 & 8 of the podcast, centered on the area of Bardstown, Kentucky.

Located on Long Island, this was the area where prostitute Shannan Gilbert had disappeared from months beforehand. Little did Mallia know the decade-in-the-making can of worms he would unearth, exposing this quaint New York community to the terrifying killer living among them. This episode dives into the lives of the four victims found in that initial discovery: Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. These women lived tragic lives, and all met the same ending, punctuated with a question mark. This is part two of three.

On the morning of May 1st, 2010, escort Shannan Gilbert ran through the neighborhood of Oak Beach, NY, pounding on strangers' doors and screaming for help. Her subsequent disappearance would spark one of the biggest serial killer manhunts in modern American history, an investigation that is still alive nearly a decade later. Part one of three.

This episode chronicles the story in the months after she was missing, when police still labelled her as a "runaway" and refused to follow up any leads until evidence was found by a citizen investigator. Part two.

At roughly 9:00 that night, her and her friend split up, and she was never seen by friends or family ever again. Then, a local citizen (and amateur detective) claimed to have predicted her disappearance beforehand, getting personally involved with the case and trying to pin it on his longtime Green River Killer suspect. This is part one of two.

This episode is the continuation of episode ten, and the second half of the story of the Beaumont Children and their disappearance. This half of the story focuses less on the Beaumont trio themselves, and more on a similar abduction that took place years later, in 1973. It also looks at two of the main suspects, Bevan Spencer von Einem and Arthur Stanley Brown.
