Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders (and Adam West!) Holy nostalgia trip, Batman! The 1966 Batman television series is beloved by fans for its campy fun, cornball humor, bombastic villains, and the legendary performance of Adam West. Rob and Matt of The Geek Chorus love the kitschy old show, and made it priority one to see it return at this year’s New York Comic Con. Realizing that the beloved stars of the classic are still around and raring to return to their famous roles, DC Home Entertainment wisely green lit an animated adaptation of the 1966-1968 pop culture landmark, with its world premiere falling on the first day of New York’s biggest geek gathering. Rob and Matt braved the long lines and joined a packed house to enjoy a panel featuring Adam West as well as the film’s director, writer, and producer. Suicide Squad: DC finally learns how to have fun! We love David Ayer movies. We looooooove DC Comics. Put ’em together, and we must get a perfect film, right? Given the roller coaster of responses to Warner Brothers’ latest entry to the DCEU (still don’t remember what it stands for), there’s a lot to dissect. Critics loathed it. Fans look like they had a good time. And the studio is rolling in that sweet sweet superhero dough regardless. Suicide Squad features a world coming to grips with the rise of superpowers and costumed vigilantes/criminals, and paranoia’s at an all-time high. The DC universe’s sociopath queen, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) puts together a black-ops team of expendable, well, assholes to combat super threats to mankind. Featuring a hilarious ensemble team of Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courteney), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez) and more, this movie thrives when it focuses on its characters. Not so much when it tries yet another end of the world team up plot. Host Rob Dickerson and resident film expert Nick Wolf gush about and critique the polarizing action epic. Everything About Harley Quinn: Everyone’s Favorite Psycho Queen Suicide Squad is one of the hot-button movie topics of the summer, but everyone agrees on one thing- Harley Quinn rules. Whether it’s Margot Robbie’s fun portrayal in the new flick or the legendary Arleen Sorkin breaking the first ground in Batman: The Animated Series, the character has become one DC Comic’s most popular, quoted, cosplayed, and beloved villains. With the former doctor Harleen Quinzel being on every geek’s mind this season, host Rob thought it would be fun to sit down with the world’s biggest Harley fan (don’t debate that with her, it’s not worth your life), Meg Foley. The Killing Joke: Long Awaited, But Does It Meet Expectations? Geeks the world over have been waiting years, even decades, to see a full adaptation of Alan Moore’s legendary graphic novel, The Killing Joke. It is considered the seminal examination of the relationship between two of fictions most iconic characters, Batman and the Joker, by pretty much everyone who isn’t loony. What’s more, Mark Hamill, THE voice of the Joker, has been pushing for it since he began to play the Clown Prince of Crime in the 90’s, even indicating he’d come out of Joker-retirement to do it. Fans were over the moon when an animated film was announced, and the lines to see it during its special screenings were staggering. But despite the hype and stellar performances, controversy quickly rose around the film and its treatment of female characters. Geek Chorus host Rob and Ginger Geek Blog’s Matt Delhauer break down what went wrong, what went right, and the depiction of gender roles in the comics world. “See, there were these two guys in a lunatic asylum…and one night, one night they decide they don’t like living in an asylum any more. They decide they’re going to escape! So, like, they get up onto the roof and there, just across this narrow gap, they see the rooftops of the town, stretching away in the moonlight…stretching away to freedom. VOLTRON: Legendary Defender- Giant Robots You Guys! We binged the hell out of the new Netflix smash hit Voltron: Legendary Defender, and from the stellar reviews and ratings, it looks like everyone else did too. The original 80’s Voltron series is a landmark classic in the mech-warrior animation canon, so this new entry from Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra’s producers had a lot to live up to. And boy, did they exceed the hype. The new is fun, humorous, action packed, and has more character development than you can shake a stick at. In fact, we think it’s even better than the original! (But Rob still swears by The Transformers) But why oh why must they torture us with cliffhangers?!
