The Well: Sermon Audio

Before Israel ever had a king, they already had one—God Himself. This message explores the backstory to how God’s people moved from living under His rule to demanding a king like the nations around them, and why that choice mattered. In their longing for a king, we’re ultimately pointed to the true King—Jesus.

Striving to follow His call for us as a church, our desire is to cultivate faithfulness in each of us while we grow into a deep and abiding relationship with Him and spread His love everywhere we go. Discover where God is leading The Well in this next season, how we plan to faithfully follow Him, how we will intentionally give the first fruits of what we receive to further the gospel reach in our community, and how you can be involved. This new season of Cultivate will once again ask each of us to step out in faith, giving above and beyond, with genuine sacrifice, to respond to the most significant kingdom investment in the history of The Well. This effort demands full participation from our entire church, giving with joy, in a manner pleasing to the Lord – not giving equal gifts but gifts of equal sacrifice.

Biblical generosity begins not with money, but with God Himself – a God who is generous by nature and who created the world for His glory and our good. Because everything we have has been entrusted to us by God, we are not owners but stewards who are called to faithfulness, contentment, and trust rather than accumulation. Jesus taught often about money because our use of resources reveals our hearts. Believers are invited to invest their resources in God’s work through joyful, intentional, and sacrificial giving, not under compulsion, but as an act of worship and spiritual maturity. At The Well, the ministry and mission of the local church are sustained entirely by the faithful generosity of individuals, handled with integrity and accountability. Generosity becomes a joyful response to grace as we participate in God’s ongoing work in our church, our city, and the world.

The Well's mission is to help connect people to God and to each other in every neighborhood. But what does it mean to truly be the church in every neighborhood? God has called us to be a church that is engaged and involved in our city, so that's what we do as people of The Well. We are a battleship, not a cruise ship, and we cultivate connection and generosity in our people to impact the community around us for His glory.

In Genesis 21, Abraham plants a tamarisk tree that he would never see fully grown in his lifetime. Why would he do such a thing? Because he knew it wasn't about him. He was thinking of the future and about the next generation of people who would benefit from the shade it would provide many years after he was gone. May we continue to be a church that does not forget or forsake the next generation. Rather, let us live in a way that shows we care about those who will live long after we are gone.

What does it mean to have the heart of a worshiper? As humans, we often pay attention to outward appearances and behavior. But God is not interested in us checking all the right boxes. God cares about our hearts, and He is honored when our hearts have the right posture, when our hearts are focused on Him, and when our actions are congruent with our worship-filled hearts.

Christmas invites us into the ancient tradition of Advent, a season of anticipation that points to both the birth of Jesus and His promised return. We are reminded that Christmas is more than tradition; it is a divine rescue story. In our brokenness and need, God sent His Son, the light of the world, to bring forgiveness, reconciliation, and new life. As recipients of that grace, we are called to remember Christ’s coming and reflect His light together as a community marked by love and hope in a dark world.
