Things That Matter (To Me)

Robert looks back at the telecast of the 92nd Oscars, including why Parasite's win was good but not great (at least in his eyes). He then looks at some of his most anticipated films for 2020, which is a pretty long list, giving some rationale for each selection. 

Robert is joined by his friend, and former cohost of the Brew With A View Podcast, Ryan Heefner, to discuss the upcoming Oscar ceremony. The guys take some time to go through some of the major categories and pick winners, as well as who they would pick if they had a vote. They also discuss some of the other categories, including some minor predictions.

After a few episodes focused on soccer, Robert turns his attention to the American National Pastime, and tells the story of how he came to become a fan of the Chicago Cubs. He looks back at watching games on WGN--from Virginia, no less--as a kid and how he took on the fandom since meeting and marrying his now-wife. 

In this latest episode, Robert's longtime (and very British) friend Andy drops by to share about his love for what the rest of the world calls football. He discusses growing up in England and the role the sport plays there, as well as his impressions of the game here in the States, among other lovely things. There's also a fantastic bit about a "soccer match" played between Iceland and Mexico in Charlotte many years ago.

Switching things up a bit, the focus moves from music to sports. Robert pontificates on why sports in general matter, and then gets into the story of how he, against all odds, became an avid soccer supporter. 

Robert is joined by his long time friend and frequent musical collaborator Aaron Bucy to talk about why music--especially that written for corporate singing in the church--matters. Aaron also talks about his history growing up as a musician, his various jobs in the music industry and what records have mattered to him, both lately and over the last several years. 

Taking a break from guests, Robert unpacks some of his favorite records so far from 2019, many of which involve bands that went on hiatus and returned. In a slight turn from expectations (although, really, this hasn't been around long enough for expectations to exist yet), Robert continues looking at the topic of music, this time bringing Anthony Franklin, a friend of Robert's who plays music with him in the band at church. Tony talks about his upbringing in Florida, the music he grew up listening to and what impact music has on his life now as a husband and father. For episode 2, Robert welcomes his good friend Kelsey Bucy who is currently working as a music therapist in Texas, and is also an accomplished pianist in her own right. The two discuss why music matters to Kelsey, not only as part of her career, but also in terms of her growth as a person and how it impacts her life on a daily basis.
