Are you searching for some amazing music, but you can't bear to sift through all those elitist-sounding music reviews out there? Join theatre artists and music enthusiasts Michael and Tyler on their quest to find the perfect album. Each week they invite a guest (or two) to share stories about the music that made them who they are AND to suggest what THEY believe is the perfect album. An album so brilliant that "10 out of 10" just doesn't do it justice.

2025: A Year in Music (sort of)

Looks like we made it…to the end of another year! So before we move on to season 10, we’re taking some time to reflect on the music that meant something to us in 2025. Spoiler alert: it didn’t all come out in 2025 (and some of it isn’t even music). Let us know what music stood out to you this year in the comments! And here are the links Tyler promises within the episode: Travis Holcombe's announcement about the end of FREAKS ONLY Travis Holcombe's FREAKS ONLY Spotify playlist This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel. Ep 111: Colin O'Brien Nominates "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Permanent Record: Al in the Box"

Season 9 finale! Weird Al! Colin O'Brien! Need I say more?? That's right, the Mayor of Christmas himself joins us today to close out our ninth season in style. Colin is a multi-hyphenate creative powerhouse based in St. Louis, MO and he is one of Tyler's oldest and best buddies. He brings a deadly precision to his case for "Permanent Record: Al in the Box", a three hour treasure trove of hits and lesser known gems from the first decade of Al's storied career. It's the opinion of this TOGT11'er that Al doesn't quite get the flowers he deserves. We do just a bit to rectify that this week. But will Colin make it happen and earn a spot for Weird Al in the pantheon? Strap on your accordion and join us to find out. Introducing The Colton Collection

Tyler here. Catching our breath before our Season 9 finale! I'm checking in this week and introducing you to a new ongoing project I'm undertaking - The Colton Collection. My sister Lauren (our guest in Ep 106) and her husband Casey recently welcomed their first child into the world and, let me tell ya, this kid's simply the best. Our family is having a ball loving on young Colton and I decided it was my duty as his uncle to provide him with his first personalized mixtape. Enter The Colton Collection. What I'm going to do is add one song for each month of his life and see how long I can keep it up. He's about to be six months old so I've selected the first six songs that I think King Colt needs to know. You can find and follow the playlist on Spotify here. Or if you've divested from Spotify, here's a Google Sheet where I'll record the songs on the playlist for your perusal. One song every month. The music my guy Colton needs to know. I'm hoping it'll be the start of a lifelong musical conversation. What songs do YOU think Colton needs to know? Hit me with any and all suggestions. And come on back next week as we stick the landing on our ninth season! Theme music composed by Damien Figueras. Got a question, comment, or suggestion? Ep 110: Jamar Gilbert Nominates “Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool”

We’ve got school spirit, yes we do, we’ve got spirit, and so does Jamar Gilbert! That’s right, another old school chum joins us this week on the pod and we couldn’t be happier about it. Jamar is an artist of the highest order, a truly gifted actor, and a simply lovely human being in general. I hope each and every one of you gets the pleasure of getting to know this guy at a party some day. He’s the best. And it turns out he has excellent taste in music to boot! Jamar accepted the TOGT11 challenge this week and unearthed for us the mid 00’s conscious rap gem “Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool” by, you guessed it, Lupe Fiasco. A thrilling, 19 track opus, “The Cool” was Fiasco’s “arrival”, if you will. He really put it all together on this sophomore effort and solidified what would be his signature style of intricate rhymes traversing the landscapes of politics, spirituality, and pop culture in a way that few with his level of commercial success in the hip hop space had before. And he could ask for no better champion than Jamar, that’s for sure. Jamar details just how deeply this album affected him as a young man and how it helped him both embrace his own individuality while opening the door to a whole universe of possibilities for what he could become. Our chat with Jamar was everything we love about making this podcast. But will it be enough? Will Mr. Gilbert earn a spot for “The Cool” in the TOGT11 pantheon? We hope you’ll join us to find out. Ep 109: Josh Tyson Nominates Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over the Sea"

What a beautiful face we have found in this place - it's Josh Tyson's face, specifically! Josh is an actor and sometime musician based in NYC and he has joined us in all his effervescent glory this week to make his case for one of the ultimate nerdy white guy albums: Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. In The Aeroplane..., with its jangling guitar, warbling vocals from lead singer and songwriter Jeff Mangum, and dark, at-times grotesque lyrics, has become a touchstone of late 90s indie rock. Josh spins one hell of a yarn himself, tracing his love for this album all the way back to his first encounters with "oldies" radio and his own attempts at songcraft over the years. We jam on how deceptively simple these songs are and how, at the end of the day, the power will always rest with how personal you can make your art. Oh, and Josh sings a lot in this episode! It's a hoot. Will his case cut the mustard and earn Mr. Mangum a spot in the pantheon? You know how to find out. EDITOR'S NOTE: Michael mentions at one point how he believed Neutral Milk Hotel played on the last episode of The Colbert Report, as Stephen Colbert is quite the NMH fan. Turns out they didn't actually play live but "Holland, 1945" did play over the closing credits. So they were there in spirit. Ep 108: Michael Osinski Nominates Zero 7's "Simple Things" (with guest host Matt Risby)

It’s Scorpio season, and all Michael wanted for his birthday this year was the chance to nominate another album to join the pantheon. Well who are we to deny people their wishes? Especially in this economy. So this week Michael is nominating a downtempo classic from the early aughts - “Simple Things” by Zero 7 - and we’ve enlisted former guest and TTRPG enthusiast, The Bad Spot's own Matt Risby, to serve as co-host and adjudicator. It’s an album that doesn’t sound like the rest of Michael’s angsty guitar-soaked favorites. It made a much bigger splash across the pond, and it may owe a lot to bands like Massive Attack and Air. We also have some things to say about Zero 7’s inclusion on the “Garden State” soundtrack, and well, there may or may not be a Mystery Science Theater 3000 style episode ahead of us. It’s the most chill way we could think of to celebrate Michael’s birthday. Tune in to see if he gets his wish. Check out Matt playing VOID 1680 AM (with a special appearance from Tyler). Ep 107: Rich Hammond Nominates Elbow's "Asleep in the Back"

Don’t tell our moms, but we’ve got another stranger on the pod. (And a foreigner no less.) This week we’re talking to Rich Hammond - musician, mental health advocate, and author of the blog Record Reconstructor - about a shoegazey little gem from the early aughts: “Asleep in the Back” by the UK band Elbow. So it was really just an excuse for us to talk about ALL the amazing music coming out of the UK during that time period by bands like Muse, Doves, and…another band that may have gotten their start in Oxford. The music might be a bit melancholy, but our guest sure isn’t. And he’s only a few weeks away from completing his quest to listen to 1000 albums before the end of 2025! Will he succeed? We don’t know, because the year’s not up yet. Will his album choice go to 11? Guess you'll have to listen to find out. Learn more about Rich’s quest and read all his musings on music at Record Reconstructor. Ep 106: Lauren Robinson Nominates Noah Kahan's "Stick Season (Forever)"

The leaves are fallin', the pumpkins are spicin', and we can't think of a better way to celebrate autumn than to finally welcome the one and only Lauren Robinson onto the pod! That's right, Tyler's one and only sister has brought us a little taste of the Northeast with Noah Kahan's megahit album "Stick Season (Forever)". We dive into Lauren's emo roots, her dedication to the art of the mixtape, and, of course, do a little reminiscing on Lauren and Tyler's shared musical souls. What more could you want?? But will Lauren do her family proud and gain entrance into the pantheon for "Stick Season (Forever)"? Tune in to find out. Ep 105: Paul Oakley Stovall Nominates Sade's "Promise"

You might say this week’s guest is one smooth operator. We’re talking to the ridiculously talented actor and playwright Paul Oakley Stovall. He’s taking us all the way back to the early days of VH1 with the second album from Sade, Promise. And before you start relegating this music to the aisles of CVS or to those late-night smooth jazz radio stations, you better listen to what Paul has to say. He even invokes James Baldwin! The fact is that this band - led by singer Sade Adu - has made an album with pure honest poetry, genuine beauty, and downright audacity. Dare we call it the sweetest taboo? Ep 104: Marcy Barbeau Nominates J Balvin's "Vibras"

This week's episode is alllllll vibes, baby. Like, it actually is all about "Vibras" by J Balvin. So it is LITERALLY all vibes. I'm not kidding. We welcome Tyler's dear friend Marcy Barbeau onto the pod this week to tell us exactly how and when to implement "Vibras", because she's an expert. Marcy and Tyler got their starts in the theatre together in high school (another LHS Flyer representing on the pod) and Marcy has gone on to design lights for theater and opera all over the world. She's really really good at it. In building her case for the perfection of "Vibras", Marcy brings us back to sun dappled barbecues and a season of bilingual romance. She sheds a little light on exactly why you should add "Vibras" to your rotation, if you haven't already. Will her case have what it takes to gain "Vibras" a spot in the pantheon? Ep 103: Kerstin Vaughn Nominates Hozier's "Hozier"

Brush up your Irish brogues, y'all. This week Kerstin Vaughn is taking us to church as she makes a case for the 2014 eponymous debut album from Hozier. It's an album that may have caused her to wrestle with her Christian upbringing, and to that we say, "Welcome to group!" She talks about her family's eclectic listening habits, her transition from band geek to theatre geek, and her love for the poetry of this "fae king." Just don't ask her what her favorite U2 song is. Go ahead, you can laugh all you want. We were never cool in school, but we sure as hell hope you remember us. We are back, booked, blessed, and in the same room together for our first episode of season 9! And we're talking with OUR favorite piano man - Aaron Aptaker - about HIS favorite piano man and the eponymous debut album from Ben Folds Five. (Which might not really be an eponymous album, if Aaron's theory is correct). It's not the first time we've invoked Mr. Folds's name on the pod, and it probably won't be the last. Tyler Looks Back on 100 Episodes

One more look back (but certainly not in anger) before we officially break for the summer! This week, Tyler shares a bit of what he loved most about the first 100 episodes, presents some curated back catalog clips, and calls out the albums he think you need to listen to right now. Before we go on hiatus for the summer, we're each looking back on the first 100 episodes. This week it's Michael's turn, and he's taking you on a walking tour of Canton, New York, as he remembers some of his favorite moments on the podcast. Ep 101: Michael & Tyler Nominate Queens of the Stone Age's 'Songs for the Deaf' (with Ashlyn Lozano)

In Part 2 of the celebration of our 100th episode, we get up to more hijinks with our buddy Ashlyn Lozano! We look to the future and discuss our vision of where we’d like to go next with the pod. There might also be some mention of a few of our dream guests?? And we officially, jointly nominate Queens of the Stone Age’s “Songs for the Deaf” for inclusion in the pantheon. Ash is a loyal listener and rock aficionado, so she puts us through our paces as we make our case for this gem of 00’s desert rock. Will she rubber stamp our pick? Only one way to find out. And finally, we close out our episode by sharing the truly amazing messages of congratulations we received from many of our former guests. We feel so lucky to have friends like y’all. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all. Much LOVE. Don’t miss this one! Here’s to a hundred more! Ep 100: Part 1 of Our 100th Episode Extravaganza with Ashlyn Lozano

Man, it’s a milestone day! 100 freaking episodes. Time really has flown since we started chatting music with y’all. We’ve loved every minute so far. As such, we are marking the occasion with our very first VIDEO EPISODE. Your boys are catching up with the times. I’m no Thelma Schoonmaker so goodness knows the video editing will be a little rough around the edges. But fear not, I intend to sharpen those skills post-haste. We also decided to flip the script on ourselves even further and are welcoming our dear buddy, and fan favorite friend-of-the-pod, Ashlyn Lozano on as our guest host! It really could only be Ash, right? In Part 1 of our 100th Episode Extravaganza, Ashlyn leads us on a walk down memory lane. We dive into the origins of this project, some of the defining moments for each of us, and reveal which one of us has designs on launching another pod?? We couldn’t be more grateful to y’all for joining us on this journey and we hope you enjoy this week’s celebration of the little community we have sprouting up around us. Let us know if there are any memorable moments from our first 100 episodes that have stuck with you! And make sure to come back next week when Michael and I jointly nominate the 100th album to enter the This One Goes to 11 pantheon! We love ya, friendos.  Xoxox, Michael & Tyler You can also find this this episode on our YouTube channel. Ep 98: Madelaine Strickland Nominates "Lempicka (Original Broadway Cast Recording)"

We just couldn't make it to episode 100 without covering one more musical. We're theatre boys, after all. So we invited Mike's dear college friend Madelaine Strickland to make a case for the soundtrack to a very contemporary musical - Lempicka by Carson Kreitzer and Matt Gould. Never heard of it? Not surprised. It didn't last 2 months on Broadway. But Madelaine thinks it deserved better, and she's making a case for it to join the pantheon and have a little more life. The views and opinions expressed in this episode are solely Madelaine's own and do not reflect the views of her employer. This episode also comes as a playlist on our YouTube channel.
