Episode 45 - Pegasus Wing Program
Episode in
Trailblazing Podcast
The Pegasus “Wings” Program (Wings) is an innovative 501(c)3 non-profit ‘pilot training’ scholarship fund initially targeting deprived youth in the Greater Hartford community. Wings was authored and developed under the auspices of Pegasus Air Charter – a progressive Air Charter company headquartered at Brainard Airport, in Hartford Connecticut. Pegasus also offers Air Ambulance services, Professional Flight Training services and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) aka Drone services.
The explicit mandate of the Wings program is Workforce Development – an effort organized in partnership with the City of Hartford – specific to the development and implementation of a radical and turnkey pilot training pipeline. The timing of Wings; its development and execution, as a sustainable jobs-producing program, is also germane given the current industry condition and forecasts relating to the chronic shortage of commercial pilots both at home and abroad.
The Pegasus “Wings” Program was developed on the basis of true-life data relating to the global shortage of commercial pilots. This has inspired the development of Wings’, further solidifying its mission of seeking-out, engaging and training deprived teenagers to become Commercial Pilots. Once successfully trained and certified, Wings graduates will receive guaranteed job placements within Pegasus’ air charter operation – as First Officers, ultimately placing them on a progressive career track towards becoming successful airline pilots.

JA focuses on making students financially responsible, prepared for the workforce and entrepreneurially savvy. JA provides a powerful learning experience for young people for two reasons:
JA programs are delivered by volunteers from business and the community, who work hand in hand with classroom teachers. These volunteers inspire the students through their real-world experience.
The curriculum consists of hands-on activities that allow the students to learn by doing. Designed by national experts in learning, activities are engaging, fun and comprehensive. All JA lessons correlate to the state curriculum standards.
While most of JA’s programs are provided to students during the school day as a part of regular classes, JA also has programs for after-school settings and sponsors conferences and other learning opportunities at local company sites and colleges and universities.
JA is proud to reach thousands of young people in this region. But we need to reach more, and we can’t do so without your help. Please consider becoming a classroom volunteer – it’s easy, fun and fulfilling. You also can help by providing financial support, either through a donation or involvement in one of our special events.

Episode 33 - Prudence Crandall
Episode in
Trailblazing Podcast
Prudence Crandall purchased an imposing late Georgian-style house in 1831 to serve as a private academy for local young women. When she admitted Sarah Harris, an African American student, Crandall found that parents of white students objected. In April 1833, she opened her house as a boarding school for young African American women, an action which led to harassment by neighbors, passage of a state law against her work and her being jailed for one night. Through two court trials and an appeal to the state's Supreme Court of Errors, Crandall continued to operate her school. Only after a violent attack on the house on the night of September 9, 1834, did she agree to close the school and send her students home. In the United States during the years leading up to the Civil War, the Crandall incident was one of many that helped solidify attitudes against slavery. Crandall's effort to provide equal education, however, was a rarity for the times. In 1994, Prudence Crandall was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame and in 1995, Crandall was designated as Connecticut's State Heroine. The Prudence Crandall House, a National Historic Landmark, is a museum open to the public.
