First, I started paying closer attention to the flow of energy throughout the mix. You’ll notice that this mix starts off with a more laid-back, lower tempo track and then gradually builds up the energy for a grand finale towards the end of the mix. The second experiment was venturing slightly out of Trance zone into the House genre with selected tracks that are are melodically uplifting and add an energetic twist to the overall feel of the mix. This is the kind of track that jumps out to me as incredibly awesome. It’s usually so incredible that it feels as if it’s begging to be mixed in. Once selected, the seed track influences the rest of the mix in terms of theme, key, and average tempo. In this mix, the seed track was the outstanding collaboration between Aly & Fila with the Egyptian singer Karim Youssef, a Middle Eastern-influenced vocal piece called “Laily”, which is the opening track of Aly & Fila’s 2013 album “Quite Storm“. It’s not a coincidence that this genre of music is called Trance. Any fan will definitely tell you that at one point or another they have actually felt it while listening to this music. Personally, I think it’s incredible that this type of music alone can get you to that state. At work, it’s the magic sauce for zoning in and getting stuff done. On the road, it makes your ride that much more fun (provided your speakers or headphones do it justice). At home or everywhere else, well, you get the idea. And then there’s the “enchantment” part, which is “a feeling of great liking for something wonderful and unusual”. Getting lost in a Trance mix, like this one I hope, is a wonderfully enchanting experience that carries you on a journey from one “town” to another, each with its own unique “culture”. That’s how I like to think of my Trance Nchantment mixes, and this one is no exception. When I listen to a classic Trance record, say from the 90s, and compare that to a recently released one, it just seems to me that the old Trance records were not as ‘rich’ in texture and harmony as the ones released in this decade. It’s easier because there are only a number of common ways you can mix two Trance tracks, including outro/intro, outro/breakdown, breakdown/intro and breakdown/breakdown. It doesn’t need as much creativity as with the Chillout genre. It’s also easier because most of the popular Trance records have been remixed a number of times and as a DJ you use the remix that works best for you or you can even mix and match two or more remixes to create the perfect blend (which I’ve done on a number of occasions). However, the difficulty with Trance mixes lies in the mastering process and making sure your mix sounds punchy and just loud enough. The set of skills needed for that is not in every aspiring DJ bag of self-taught skills and I’ve definitely had to go out of my way to learn a lot of those along the way, including basic mastering techniques. Regardless, the end result is always worth it. The mixes I create in the Trance Nchantment series are the ones I’m proud of the most and I enjoy listening to them over and over again.
