School Days Were The Worst Days

Written by TriniTrent at School Days Were The Worst Days "Your school days are your best days." That's an old saying that is popular in Trinidad and Tobago. However, bullying and incessant homophobia made my time in school anything but fun. This episode of the Trini Trent Radio podcast is personal for me. As I continue on my journey of self-discovery, I recognise there are unresolved issues in my past. It amazes me when men boast about bullying people during their school days. They beam and chuckle as they remember how they tormented others. What they fail to realise is a bonding moment for them is trauma for someone else. "School Days Were My Worst Days" is related to "Growing Up Gay." Listen and share your thoughts. Cuckoo For Conflict Resolution

Written by TriniTrent at Cuckoo For Conflict Resolution Worldstar! Forget conflict resolution, let's knock somebody out. Compassion is weakness. Love is for school girls. Indeed, the only important thing in life is winning. Congratulations, you just played yourself. In fact, you let your ego play you. Every day of our lives presents situations that could either lead to stronger connections or conflict. Unfortunately, many of us choose the latter because we are driven by pride and anger. In this week's episode of the Trini Trent Radio podcast, I share insight from my journey of self-discovery as I learn to deal with conflict. Honestly, those of you who have followed me for years know it has been a long road. Learn to remove toxic people from your life. Understand you don't need to respond to every criticism fired at you. Furthermore, resist the urge to clap back as you learn to listen to others. The list goes on. If that picture upset you, "Cuckoo For Conflict Resolution" is for you. The Emancipation Of Me

Written by TriniTrent at The Emancipation Of Me As Trinidad and Tobago celebrates Emancipation Day, this is the perfect time to discuss freedom. With that in mind, this week's episode of the Trini Trent Radio podcast explains how to break free from toxic relationships. Being stuck in unhealthy friendships or romantic partnerships is similar to walking in circles. It causes tremendous emotional, physical and mental stress as we remain locked in a toxic cycle. There are several reason why people stay in unhealthy relationships. Among them are pride, fear, insecurity and lust. Yes, good sex can make even the strongest of us hang on for dear life. However, there is hope. It is possible to let go and move on from situations that drain us. It is possible to develop of a deep love of self that replaces the need for another person. It is possible to be happy. The first step is admitting the relationship is hurting you. From that moment, you can start the journey. I know because I'm on it right now. "The Emancipation Of Me" builds on the previous Trini Trent Radio episode, "That Man Is Wasting Your Time." That Man Is Wasting Your Time

Written by TriniTrent at That Man Is Wasting Your Time A man should not have to block your calls for you to know he is not interested in you. In fact, the signs are all obvious if you are willing to admit he has been wasting your time. Stop being led on by a man who uses you as a distraction or a backup plan. Stop holding onto fantasies of what could be and see what is real. If he refuses to make a you a priority in his life, move on. Last year, we explained how men treat people when they've lost interest. This time, I'm digging deeper into the topic as I list signs that a man is using you. "He's not that into you" is the phrase people use to describe a man who keeps someone hanging on. Stop it. That man is leading you on and enjoying the comforts you give him without offering you the same. As Nina Simone said, "You have to learn to get up from the table when love is no longer being served." Swipe Right For Your Happily Ever After

Written by TriniTrent at Swipe Right For Your Happily Ever After K. Michelle has crafted a song that captures the mentality of our generation. "Drake Would Love Me" tells the tale of how people look toward men as heroes, ready to lead them into a life of happily ever after. In fact, the tune aligns with this week's episode of Trini Trent Radio, "Swipe Right For Your Happily Ever After." We have been trained to dismiss potential partners based on their physical appearances. As a result, we rarely take the time to get to know people beyond what we see in pictures and short Instagram clips. #BAEgoals. That is the stamp of approval given to men online who match standards of beauty and masculinity. Yet, those men are strangers who show us what they want us to see. Indeed, Instagram comprises an array of edited bulges and displays of masculine behaviour. The rat race continues still. People compete in activity feeds for the attention of these men. They are the missing pieces for those seeking to complete their lives with perfect mates. Listen to "Swipe Right For Happily Ever After" as I discuss these issues. You are complete. You do not need the attention and validation of others to make you whole. No Rise Filter For The Soul

Written by TriniTrent at No Rise Filter For The Soul "You are fat...Your nose is too wide...You are too small to qualify for Eggplant Fridays...Your skin is too dark...You need the rise filter." Those of us who spend long periods of time scanning social media are exposed to an array of messages that compel us to conform to skewed standards of beauty. However, as we look toward those impossible benchmarks, we forget to work on forming a healthy sense of self. Photo editing software available on Instagram, Facetune, Enlight and Photoshop give us the ability to alter our appearances. With a few swipes and clicks, we can transform our pictures to look like our favourite celebrities. Yet, the work that we do to change our looks is a reflection of how we are struggling with the concept of self-acceptance. Of course, many people go a step further by manipulating their looks in the real world. They rely on pills, steroids, eating disorders and overworking their bodies to achieve "perfection." Moreover, those dangerous behaviours become habits when people enjoy the short term high from likes, compliments and sexual favours. In this episode of Trini Trent Radio, I propose a change with a simple affirmation: "I am enough." This is a followup to "Your Instagram Is A Liar." This is "No Rise Filter For The Soul." Social Media, Faffing And You

Written by TriniTrent at Social Media, Faffing And You Sharing happenings in our lives on social media has become a regular part of our daily lives. Yet, when activities become habits that govern our time, we need to ask, "Do I have a problem?" My return to Trinidad and Tobago triggered several changes in my life, among which was anxiety. Dealing with reverse culture shock and adjusting to a "new" way of life were tall tasks, and that pressure was worsened by my use of social media. Imagine waking up each day to angry messages and threats from people on every social media platform. Add the pressure to stay relevant and active, and you have the perfect storm for a breakdown. Luckily, I took the time to step away and assess the situation before things went too far. Doing so, however, allowed me to see social media from the outside. All the debates, GIFs, memes, "must see" videos and headlines are summed up in word word: Noise. Trini Trent Radio previously touched on our social media habits in "Grace Jones Tried To Warn Us" and "Your Instagram Is A Liar." However, this episode goes a step further as I admit to being part of the problem and offer advice to break the cycle of mindless scrolling or faffing. Finding Love At First Night

Written by TriniTrent at Finding Love At First Night If you were a Brandy fan at the turn of the century, you remember the her story of attraction in the song "Full Moon." However, some people expect to take that passion further by committing to love at first night. Terry Torro and Sean Anthony Torrington have combined their creative energies for a hilarious new series, Love @ First Night, which explores how a young couple find love after a hookup. Witty and entirely relevant to the times, the show is a welcome addition to the world of LGBTQ online content. Is forming a lasting relationship after a one-night stand possible? For those of us who are eager to date and form bonds with possible partners before giving in to the physical, the idea is foreign. After all, there are so many things that can go wrong during the first sexual encounter alone. In this episode of the Trini Trent Radio podcast, I discuss the now dominant dynamic of sex before conversation. Simply, it is the new age conundrum of the chicken and egg; a puzzle I'm still trying to figure out. Listen to "Finding Love At First Night" to hear my thoughts. For Black Boys With Absent Black Fathers

Written by TriniTrent at For Black Boys With Absent Black Fathers The idea of absent black fathers is being tackled as a myth. However, those of us who grew up without that guiding male figure know it is anything but. It's time we address our daddy issues. Six months have passed since the last episode of Trini Trent Radio. In that time, I put my efforts into Trini Trent TV and adjusting to life in Trinidad and Tobago. Yet, I was keeping myself busy without reflecting on how drastically my life has changed. Then, I stopped. Being still and getting in touch with my inner peace has opened the floodgates to a wave of issues that have been suppressed for years. Issues that are perfect topics for this podcast. In the spirit of Father's Day, I am here to address absentee black fathers. An unfortunate stereotype that plagues our communities but has proven to be true more often than we admit. Black men are pressured by society to conform to an array of gender norms and ideals that are often impossible to fit. Many of us do so without the guidance of men in our families, and we look to the media or the streets for models of masculinity. To say there are people in black communities with daddy issues may be taboo but it is the reality. We need to change that before we pass the burden of abandonment onto future generations. Listen to "For Black Boys With Absent Black Fathers" as we work to break the cycle.
