Passion 2016 | The Beast, the Book, and the Beauty of the Lamb – John Piper

Let’s start with a roadmap of where we are going. I’ll just give the scenic stopping places—some beautiful, some horrible — and bring us finally to the destination, namely, the purpose of your life in view of this journey.
First we will travel back to eternity-past and see the Lamb of God slain before the foundation of the world in the mind of God, and then travel to eternity-future to see the slain Lamb of God as the central song of the universe, and then we will travel back to center-point of human history — not the temporal center-point, but the center-point of significance — and we will see the Lamb of God actually slain in history outside Jerusalem by the decree of Pontius Pilate, governor of Judea.
Then we will make this journey again and visit those same places, in a different order, and this time we will focus not on the Lamb but on his people. First we will stop in eternity-past and see the people whom God appointed or predestined as the people of the Lamb. Then we will travel to the center-point of history where that appointed people was purchased by the blood of the slain Lamb. Then we travel on to eternity-future where we will see the appointed and purchased people praising the slain Lamb as the King of the universe.
And finally, we will travel into these rooms in Atlanta and Houston, and see three purposes for your life that follow from the slaying of the Lamb in the eternal mind of God, in the center of history, and in the song of the universe — what it means for you to be appointed before the foundation of the world, purchased 2,000 years ago and destined to sing about it forever.
So I hope you will put your spiritual hands on the steering wheel of your minds and come with me, because, for all of its terrible turns, this is the best of all journeys, with the happiest ending.
That’s the roadmap. Now for journey.

The Way the World Thinks – Albert Mohler

In his book Evangelicalism in Modern Britain: A History from the 1730s to the 1980s, British historian David Bebbington provided a definition of evangelicalism that has become the standard boilerplate understanding for academics and journalists on both sides of the Atlantic (David Bebbington, Evangelicalism in Modern Britain: A History from the 1730s to the 1980s [Routledge, 1989], 2–3).
He described evangelicalism in terms of four distinctives: biblicism (a confidence that the Bible is the Word of God), conversionism (a belief that persons must come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ), crucicentrism (a belief that the cross and the resurrection are the central acts whereby God saves sinners), and activism (evangelicals are people who hold crusades, build colleges and seminaries, go on mission trips, organize conferences, and create periodicals and publishing houses).
Noticeably absent from Bebbington’s list, however, is the idea that evangelicals are defined by their thinking. This is to our shame. Christ’s people are to be active in the “renewing of [the] mind,” for “as [a man] thinketh in his heart, so is he” (Romans 12:1–2 KJV; Proverbs 23:7 KJV; Matthew 15:10–20). There is a necessary distinction between thinking and action, but if activism happens without an adequate foundation of thinking, then our activism will be separated from the gospel and from the demands of Christ on our lives. Therefore, without apology, Christians must think about thinking.
Children do not often think about thinking. Within the developmental stage of early adolescence, there comes a sudden acknowledgment that there are other minds. “People think differently than I, or even my parents, think,” a young teen will exclaim. By adolescence, we perceive ourselves thinking and begin to think about that process. Most human beings, however, never attempt to think deeply about thinking.
By contrast, a Christian understands that he or she was made to bring God glory, to point persons to Christ, to exalt in the things of Christ, and to meditate upon God’s Word. Because of the biblical imperative to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, Christians must perpetually think about thinking. Philosophers call this a “second-order discipline.” Thinking is a first-order discipline, but thinking about thinking is a second-order discipline. This complex thinking is required if we are to measure and contrast faithful thinking over against unfaithful thinking.

Ephesians 6:10-13 – The cares of this world; the example of Martha; the need for the Christian to reprimand himself; and to exercise self-discipline; ‘take no thought for the morrow’; the command of the Lord; lack of faith is unbelief; the problem of guidance; faith and healing; what is the prayer of faith?

Gods Glory as the Base of our Courage – Matt Chandler
Episode in
Truth Endures
http://t4g.org/media/2016/04/gods-glory-as-the-base-of-our-courage-romans-1133-36/
Matt Chandler only gets three words into this sermon’s text before stopping to exalt our sovereign God. Encouraging pastors to not cow to cultural pressures, Chandler exalts in the strength of God’s omnipotence. Chandler reviews a recent trip he took to Rome, where he saw how the world’s strongest empire—which tried to exterminate Christians—lies in ruins yet Christ’s reigns in victory. Thus, “Christian courage inflamed and informed by the glory of God will be the undoing of every empire against the kingdom of God.” Take heart, brothers and sisters.

Endurance Needed Strength for a Slow Reformation and the Dangerous Allure of Speed – Mark Dever
Episode in
Truth Endures
Mark Dever speaks to why endurance is such a necessary virtue for the Christian minister. In this talk, Dever aims to exhort pastors to not miss out on the joys of ministry, such as the joy of resting in the sufficiency of Scripture, the joy of hearing others preach better sermons than you, the joy of seeing others converted, and other joys. These joys are part of the fuel God intends his pastors to have to continue in their service. Why are denominational growth awards paltry substitutes for healthy churches? What are the joys of the spotlight vs. the joy of the elder’s chair?

Truth Endures
David Platt closed out T4G 2016 by reviewing the lives and deaths of martyrs from the Reformation and applying their theology of death and mission to the church today. Putting our pain in perspective, Platt reminded us that “your perspective of earthly embers changes when you remember that you have been saved from an eternal inferno.” Platt continues to call the church to hasten the day of her Lord’s return by continuing to share the gospel with the lost and the unreached.
