Cameroon Incognito

Episode in TUMULT
The crisis in Cameroon has been called the worst humanitarian crisis in the world for two years in succession.  While the devastating situation is continuing to unfold, media reports from the region are extremely sparse and documentation of the conflict is minimal.  This episode addresses the need for documentation and reporting on the crisis. What is happening in Cameroon? What does Colonialism have to do with it? And what can the international community do to help?  With the contribution of Ingrid Viban (international development researcher from the University of Oxford), Esther Omam (executive director of Reach Out NGO), and Lisa Trebs, (research assistant at Institute for Development Studies (IDS).  Artwork by @happytoborders  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tumult/message

Karibik und Kolonialismus – Malaika Tschirko und Georg Sölkner, KonaK

Episode in TUMULT
Cover art by @happytoborders.

Yemen

Episode in TUMULT
In Yemen we see the largest humanitarian crisis of our time unfolding before our eyes.  Why is it so hard to keep the momentum on Yemen and to face the extent of human despair?   In this episode, I was lucky enough to talk to a political scientist, a UNHCR aid worker, and a Yemeni woman and founder of an NGO aiming to empower women and children in Yemen to explore some pressing questions.  This episode is dedicated to Yemen. To all the people in Yemen trying to survive, all the aid workers who work tirelessly to alleviate some of the distress on the population and everyone undertaking efforts to spread the message and help people within this forgotten war.  Consider subscribing to TUMULT wherever you get your podcasts and leave a rating if you want. Where are you from? Exploring Cultural Identity with Sabina McKenna

Episode in TUMULT
Where are you from? is a question that holds a magnitude of assumptions and often deprives people of their sense of belonging. Often, Black People and People of Colour are being asked this question, especially when they are navigating in a predominantly white landscape.  I was lucky enough to connect with the curator Sabina McKenna who is putting this question in the spotlight and addressing the emotional depth of cultural identity.  On June 29th the online exhibition 'Hair by Where Are You From' is launching, featuring 26 stories written by BIPOC womxn exploring the experience of having textured, curly and coily hair.  'The series aims to build pride and identity for women with textured hair by celebrating all of its beautiful variations.'  Follow @whereareyoufrom__ to have access to all of these empowering stories and valuable resources.

Turning the Page after ISIS – How Literature is Reviving the Spirit of Mosul – Fahad Sabah, Book Forum

Episode in TUMULT
After three devastating years under the occupation of ISIS, Mosul's cultural scene is starting to blossom again.   The smoke of the war had not yet vanished from the city, when Fahad Sabah and his partner Harith Yaseen Abdulqadar started their mission to revive the spirit of Mosul – by creating a safe space for men and women alike, open for political debates, celebrating the literary minds of local writers and readers.   I talked to Fahad about this incredible achievement, the risks, and struggles of cultural projects in a post-war society and his visions for the future of Mosul and its people.  Find the Book Forum on Facebook:   https://www.facebook.com/BookForumMosul/  Instagram: @tumultpodcast

Understanding Culture through Language – Nour Alzaman, Arabic is Simple

Episode in TUMULT
Language is much more than learning grammar and stocking up your vocabulary. Language can function as a peacemaker, a lifesaver and a tool to foster understanding and acceptance among different cultures.  I talked to my former Arabic teacher NOUR ALZAMAN about her new business 'Arabic is Simple' and how she aims at improving cultural understanding and bettering the work of NGOs and aid workers that are in daily contact with Arabic-speaking refugees.  I was lucky enough to get insights into the broader Arabic culture and language with Nour, last year when I was living in the Netherlands. I hope some of you, who are looking for ways to better understand refugees and immigrants, will consider learning their language even if it is just a few words. The power of this, you will understand after this episode.  ARABIC IS SIMPLE WEBSITE: https://www.arabicissimple.com/ and follow Arabic is Simple on Instagram and Facebook to benefit from amazing learning videos and comprehensive explanations.

How centuries of discrimination affect Roma today — Pro-Roma Activism with Gabriela Hrabanova (CEO/ERGO Network)

Episode in TUMULT
Misconceptions about marginalized ethnic groups and cultural minorities are unfortunately not new. The structural inequalities they entail, however, have devastating consequences.  Especially in times of the Coronavirus Pandemic, ethnic groups around the world fear for their lives and often lack the protection they need.   For this week's episode, I contacted the ERGO Network, a non-profit network connecting Roma and pro-Roma grassroots organizations across Europe.  What are the origins of the Roma? Why are they systematically oppressed? What are the consequences of this oppression during the coronavirus pandemic?   Find the ERGO Network on Facebook, or on Instagram @ergo.network to support their activism.  Special thanks go to the incredible graphic designer, who created the artwork for this episode. I reached out to @happytoborders and they immediately offered to create unique cover art for this episode. Follow them for incredible activist art.  Factual Information for this episode and accompanying media material was based on the results of the Fundamental Rights Agency and data published by Amnesty International.
