Can Your Data Be Trusted?

Episode in UBM Radio

Retail Analytics: See Where Style Meets Statistics

Episode in UBM Radio
The retail sector is a prime market for use of analytics -- tracking and predicting sales success -- in support of great products and management experience. Some retailers are making the most of what data and analytics offer them, as they strive to understand customer trends and preferences. Pioneering retailers recognize that products that seem to have strong customer appeal don't make for a successful strategy on their own. Those organizations are making their mark by using all the tools available to them, including advanced analytics. Brittany Bullard, a Solutions and Analytical Consultant in the Retail and Consumer Packaged Goods Practice at SAS Institute, is author of the new book Style & Statistics, which will be featured at January's National Retail Federation's Big Show in New York. Bullard joins All Analytics Radio on Tuesday, December 6, at 2 pm EST to discuss her experiences utilizing analytics in the retail sector and some of the best practices highlighted in her book.

Data and Humans Become Friends in 2017?

Episode in UBM Radio
Month by month data has edged deeper into our lives, whether we are making business decisions or going through our day as a consumer and citizen. No longer confined to a backroom waiting to be tossed over the wall to a business manager, as it was just a few years ago, data is in our face today. The data-human relationship has been strengthening. We all know people who won't enter a restaurant without checking its online ratings. Data rules our decisions about diet and exercise. Many executives don't make tough decisionsn without asking what the numbers say. Business leaders, marketers, and operations personnel are fed data throughout their workday. Retailers know more about some of us than our friends do. And, it may seem that fewer managers put up a barrier that says "no data, ever." All Analytics Radio will be exploring the data-human relationship on Tuesday, November 22, at 2 pm, as bloggers Lisa Morgan and Pierre DeBois discuss the growing impact of data on our lives, and look forward to what 2017 will bring. Is data reaching a saturation point, or still in its infancy? Has data buried human experience in our decision process? How will the millennial generation's love of data impact business as more millennials move into management roles? Can we expect a backlash against data? Those are just some of the questions we will address as we near the end of 2016 and transition into a new year. You are invited to share your own questions with our panelists.

Visualization: Let Your Data Speak

Episode in UBM Radio
Your data analytics project doesn't really achieve a successful completion until you deliver the results to decision makers, whether the recipients are top executives, business unit leaders, or even the public at large. More and more data science teams are delivering those results through data visualization, forsaking spreadsheets and static charts in printed reports. One of the key advantages to using dataviz is the interactivity and the dynamic nature of data visualizations. But you want to do it right, and remember that your data is telling a story. Get it wrong, and your data just confuses everyone. Scott Berinato is a senior editor with the Harvard Business Review and a self-described dataviz geek. He also is author of the book Good Charts: The HBR Guide to Making Smarter, More Persuasive Data Visualizations, in which he shares best practices in dataviz. The HBR description notes: "Berinato lays out a system for thinking visually and building better charts through a process of talking, sketching, and prototyping. This book is much more than a set of static rules for making visualizations. It taps into both well-established and cutting-edge research in visual perception and neuroscience, as well as the emerging field of visualization science, to explore why good charts (and bad ones) create "feelings behind our eyes." Be sure to join All Analytics Radio when Berinato shares his advice on best practices -- and bad practices -- in data visualization on Thursday, October 13, at 2 pm Eastern time.
