2021 Unwrapped!

Dear Coconuts  This has been a year for the books, in this new dystopian world we were currently living in, we had been reeling from the after effects of the first few waves of Coronavirus only to find out that its still mutating and we may have another lockdown. Went through environmental crises, important pop culture moments and so much more. Through it all, with all the noise outside we all did the best we could, spent time learning about ourselves such as the fact that we are stronger than we thought. Here's to hoping that 2022 will be a bit more gentle on our souls and on the planet!  Time stamps  00:00 - 05:00 Our Recap of 2021 05:00 - 08:00 September problems “close to quitting job” 08:00 - 11:00 Meral's Brown Girl Privilege 11:00 - 17:40 Iconic Moments of 2021 17:40 - 25:00 The importance of “teachers” 25:00 - 28:30 Meta-verse and other cultural events 28:30 - 30:20 Importance of Family and Friends 30:20 - 36:40 Major cultural events 36:40 - 43:30Positive things in 2021, and some sad things 43:30 - 46:00 Unanimous Goals for 2022  46:00 - 49:20 Challenges for 2022 49:20 - 53:07 What in Our Cups Love, Saman and Meral

Chapter 24: The Umbrella Academy

Dear Coconuts, It is a truth universally known that Meral is obsessed with The Umbrella Academy. In this episode, we talk about everything we loved about the show in its Netflix production of Season 1. Needless to say, this episode is sprinkled with spoilers so if you have not watched the season yet, do not listen to this! Gerard Way's comic book series has touched upon themes that tug on our adult heartstrings and this show is the perfect amount of chaos, cynism, love, and heroism! Chapter 23: A Thousand Splendid Suns

Dear Coconuts, In this episode, we discuss the painfully heartbreaking story of a woman who faced many difficulties in her life but managed to maintain her dignity through it all. In Khaled Hosseini's A thousand Splendid Suns we are introduced to Marium, who has a stoic personality that shows us we can face anything and no matter how hard it gets always persevere. Khaled Hosseini also shows us the beauty of a war-ravaged Afghanistan, the colors of the country, the strength of the common man and women, and the overall resilience of the people. It's a gorgeously written book and we recommend it to all our coconuts! P.S. This episode is loaded with spoilers. Chapter 22: Mean Girls

Dear Coconuts, Mean Girls in its time was revolutionary, but what no one could have predicted was how important it will continue you be in the future. This movie not only shows us the cruel face of narcissism but also allowing us to appreciate how multidimensional humans really are. When you're young you are quick to see Regina as the main antagonist but as we get older we can appreciate that she was a victim of her circumstances too, with a superficial and childish mother, and a lot of pent-up anger. We are also able to appreciate some of the similar manipulation tactics used by Regina by Janice too. Overall, this movie was groundbreaking, providing a generation with amazing quotes such as "OMG Karen you can't just ask people why they're white"! LOL! The movie shows us what can happen if women work against each other, and how different it would be if they came together and didn't try to tear each other down. There would be peace.  PS. Check out Meral being very passive-aggressive over her drain water iced coffee.  Time Stamps: 0:00 -  3:22 Catching Up and what makes you “zen”?  3:22 -  9:04 Mean Girls has a timeless plot and origin! + Tina Fey Appreciation  9:04 - 14:55 What makes a mean girl, a mean girl?  14:55 - 20:20 Narcissism - a personality disorder  20:20 - 28:35 A trip down memory lane  28:35 - 39:55 Lessons from Mean Girls  39:55 - 44:55 Favorite Parts in Mean Girls! Chapter 20: Bo Burnham's Inside

Hey Coconuts! We had an absolute blast watching Bo Burnham’s Inside. It’s on Netflix! Give it a look see and tell us what you think! In this episode we share our take on Bo’s insight of the world! One of the things we really learnt was that we don't have to have opinions about everything under the sun nor should we demand opinions from 'our influencers' because at the end of the day we are all students.  PS. Meral’s mic was stolen by Anarkali which is why she sounds like she’s underwater. Also Juneteenth is banned in some states not countries! Chapter 19: Pixar's Inside Out

Hey Coconuts,  Recording this episode was a lot of fun, we went down a wormhole of how authentic inside out is to the actual way us humans see the world, and how our brains work. We had a chance to revisit our love for the star of the movie "Bing Bong", and our own imaginary friends whom we may have forgotten. This movie has reconfirmed the concept of toxic positivity for us. To live a good and content life you should be able to feel all emotions and acknowledge them, even if that means having a good cry from time to time. That will only make you appreciate Joy more.  Time Stamps  00:00 - 1:25 Catching up 1:25 -3:50 Myth busting   3:50 - 5:08 Inside out  5:08 - 10:15 What inside out captured well  10:15 - 14:20 The 5 core emotions  14:20 - 17: 40 Themes and Takeaways  17:40 - 20:40 Toxic happiness and Sublimation 20:40 - 27:42 Imaginary Friends  27:42 - 30:45 Orbs and the Subconscious  30:45 - 42:30 Riley’s shut down + Favorite Parts 42:30 - 47:40 Ginny and Georgia + Transition Time  47:40 - Favourite Pixar movies Love, Saman and Meral

Chapter 18: Suzanne Collins's Hunger Games

Hey Coconuts!  We are back!!! And decided to talk about one of our favorite trilogies: The Hunger Games! Anyone who knows the books and movies while being aware of the news knows that drawing parallels is an easy feat. We hope you enjoy what we discussed and there’s definitely a lot more that can be said about the books and movies. We tried to keep it a little light-hearted as we didn’t want to be Debby Downers!  PS. Anarkali is still in season break but reminded us of her presence by popping up every now and then. May the odds be ever in your favor!  Time Stamps: 0:00 - 9:00 Catching Up  9:00 - 19:59 History of Hunger Games 20:00 - 21:30 Mockingjay Symbol 21:30 - 25:15 Peeta and Love  25:16 - 29:09 “Peacekeeping” after the Games 28:10 - 35:25 Coin vs. Snow 35:25 - 40:30 The Hunger Games and the World 40:30 - 46:10 Ignorance of the Privileged  46:10 - 50:14 Brutal Realities and Human Nature 50:15 - 55:08 Who is the Capitol?  55:08 - 57:05 What’s the tea? Israel's Illegal Occupation of Palestine

Hey, This episode is a bit different, its only talking about the vile events that have been taking place. We will also discuss and try to educate ourselves and our friends about the terminology being used. And lastly urge everyone to pray for Palestine and also lets not forgot that very real lives are being lost and a lot of them are children.  Also note well that after we finished recording we also heard that the only Covid centre and lab in Gaza was destroyed in an airstrike.  P.S: Part of our goal is that you have answers ready for people who don't understand what's going on, and are saying this is "too complex" of an issue for them to speak on, well we've provided you with a timeline you can explain it to them using that. Chapter 17: Season Finale - Part 1

Hey Coconuts,  There were just so many things we wanted to talk about that we ended up talking about everything. Hopefully the time stamps will help here lol. As we bring Ramadan to a close and celebrate Eid we discussed how the month was for us overall, the few distractions that we had while fasting namely Neflix and the News. We talk about Seaspiracy, an eye opening documentary about the fishing industry ( which could be synonymous with a mafia ). We commented about Disney's movie Soul which was a very cute introspective film about being grateful. And finally for some light hearted comedy we watched Veep which was hilariously quite an accurate juxtaposition of what the US government is actually like.  P.s: Since a lot of things happened during and after Eid we figured this needs a followup, so stay tuned for part 2. Time Stamps 0:00 -2:30 Eid Mubarak Coconuts 2:30 - 11:00 Ramadan 2021 11:00 -17:00 Seaspiracy *saman meant the demand decreases not the supply * 17:00 - 20:43 Family Events ( fishes eating Merals bracelet ) 20:43 - 24:50 Our Favourite episode so far 24:50 - 30: 25 Veep with Julia Louis-Dreyfus 30:25 - 41:25 Disneys + Pixars movie Soul 41:25 - 44:30 Painting + Finding Purpose 44:30 - 46:25 News about the suffering of muslim people 46: 25 - 1h:04 Derek Chauvin trial + BLM 1h:04 -1h09 Falcon and the Winter Solider/ New Amsterdam 1h:09 -1h:15 Should the govt have so much control? 1h:15 - 1h:18 Think Global act Local + End Love, Saman and Meral

Chapter 15: Main Hoon Na

Hey Coconuts, This week we discuss Bollywood's Main Hoon Na, which was not only an instant hit when it first came out in 2004, but managed to continue being successful well into present day. This movie has everything, themes that are still very relevant to society, such as family, loyalty and most importantly love. The movie also revolves around the concept of mending the relationship between Pakistan and India which was awesome to see, and if that hasn't sold you to this movie maybe the insane action sequences that defy all laws of gravity will.   P.S: Anarkali couldn't control her excitement throughout this recording, she's a huge Shahrukh Khan fan too.  Time Stamps  00:00 - 4:00 Our week, and Fasting  4:00 - 7:00 Fan girling over Shahrukh Khan 7:30 - 13:01 Our fav SRK movies 13:01 - 14:40 Farah Khan the Director 14:40 - 34:45 Main Hoon Na "The Plot" 34:45 - 42:48 Lucky’s Mother 42:48 - 45:00 Kate Winslet + Odin from Thor 45:00 - 50:30 Why Main Hoon Na was loved 50:30 - 53:13 Brenda Song had a baby with …? 53:13 - 1h00 Favourite SRK movies 1h00 - Deed of the day and tip of the day plus what we are going to do Love, Saman and Meral

Chapter 14: My Sister\'s Keeper by Jodi Picoult

Hey Coconuts,\r\n\nWe hope you enjoy our discussion on My Sister\'s Keeper and some of the ethical questions it raised. We loved this book! It opened doors for people to have conversations on very difficult topics such as parenting, emancipation and the cost of love. One of the conclusions we had was that morals do not necessarily always support ethics. In the case of Anna, it was ethical for her to be an organ donor to Kate, but morally it was wrong as it robbed Anna of a life and childhood. \r\n\nPS. We acknowledge we aren\'t mothers but we\'ve learnt about different parenting styles from several mediums, to form an educated opinion! LOL. Anarkali played around with Saman\'s audio by placing her hand on the mic. We should talk to her and file for emancipation! \r\n\nTime Stamps: \r\n\n\n 0:00 - 6:40 Adulthood and it’s painful glory \r\n\n 6:40 - 13:10 My Sister’s Keeper Introduction \r\n\n 13:10 - 13:56 APL? Chapter 12: Marvel\'s WandaVision

Hey Coconuts! \r\n\nIn this installment we talk about WandaVision! We’re both avid fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! We use references from the movies and comics in our daily lives. Some of the things we really enjoyed that WandaVision did so brilliantly was display the different ways a person can grieve their loss, and how they come to accept their new life, and understand themselves better. Also the writers did a great job writing for vision, some of the statements he made were so profound that it takes more then one watch to appreciate them all. \r\n\nPS. Anarkali our lovely Podcast ghost didn’t make much of an appearance but Meral had a bit of a headache which is why it may sound like she’s got scrambled egg for brains! Also Meral meant to say Regina Mills from Once Upon a Time not Regina George.\r\n\nAlso It goes without saying that there are several spoilers! \r\n\n\r\n\r\n\nTime Stamps:\r\n\n\n 0:00 - 8:15 Week Recap, Movies on Alzheimer’s and Chocolate Cake\r\n\n 8:15 - 12:10 Spoiler Alert: WandaVision is Fire! \r\n\n 12:10 - 16:55 Binging vs. Taking your time + Endings \r\n\n 16:55 - 56:40 WandaVision and Stages of Grief\r\n\n 56:40 - 1h2m:40 Thought Experiments \r\n\n 1h2m:40 - 1h5m:35 Acceptance + Agathaaaa! \r\n\n 1h5m:40 - 1h7m:18 No tea?! \r\n\n\n\r\n\r\n\nLove,\r\n\nSaman and Meral\r\n

Chapter 11: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Hey coconuts, \r\n\nIn this instalment we go over the iconic novel written by Louisa May Alcott in the 1800s. Surprisingly though she managed to capture the trials of womanhood and coming of age so well, that the story still rings true in 2021. In this world we hear the tale of 4 sisters, each in her own way a strong and resilient. We learn about a mother or a matriarch who manages to keep her daughters motivated and humble throughout their lives. A story about brilliant little women. \r\n\nP.s  The personality Meral mentions is \"Aamna Isani\" from Something Haute. \r\n\nTime Stamps \r\n\n\n 00:00 -  2:00 How was our week \r\n\n 2:00 - 6:50 Trip to History \r\n\n 6:50 - 8:30 Stealing the Kiswa\r\n\n 8:30 - 11:00 Baya + Louisa May Alcott \r\n\n 11:00 - 14:42 Books + shows \r\n\n 14:42 - 31:40 The March girls\r\n\n 31:40 - 37:20 Women rights \r\n\n 37:20 - 45:00 History of the Suffragettes + Rebel girls \r\n\n 45:00 - 55:15 Aurat March and the following controversy \r\n\n 55:15 - 57:00 Humans of Pakistan \r\n\n 57:00 - 1h03 Khalil-Ur-Rehman\r\n\n 1h03 - 1h08 Dubai \r\n\n 1h08 - 1h13 Friendships + What in our cup and story\r\n\n\nLove,\r\n\nSaman and Meral\r\n

Chapter 10: "It\'s Pakistan Day"

Hey Coconuts! \r\n\nWe took a different turn in our tenth episode. It’s a little tribute to Pakistan in honor of Pakistan Day! We discuss the Resolution for Pakistan, the things we love about the work some citizens are doing, and our celebrity run ins. Obviously there’s so much more to say about the good that’s being worked towards and a lot to say on the negative aspects too. Hey coconuts, \r\n\nWe\'re backkk!!! To the lovely people that are still following us THANK YOU! Research has shown that the percentage of young boys and girls, getting cosmetic procedures has sky rocketed, so in this episode we discuss the damaging role that social media, TV and movies play, and the lasting effects it can have, in the form of eating disorders and other mental health illnesses. \r\n\nP.S The ghost has not left the building, matter in fact it has gotten louder so we decided to name it..
