On The Trail of a Serial Arsonist in California

An Unlikely Suspect: On The Trail of a California Serial Arsonist PJ Phillips is a sheep farmer in the Capay Valley, a rural stretch northwest of Sacramento. When his parents called him at 3:00 a.m., he assumed it was about a sick animal. It was September 2006, and the sky was lit by an orange glow. Their ranch was on fire. When the winter rains stop in California, the state becomes a tinderbox. But investigators say there was something different about the way this fire was started: they suspected arson. California’s wildfires are getting bigger. Most of them are started by accident, but some fires are set on purpose, and the arsonists who start them are really hard to catch. Reporter Teresa Cotsirilos brings us the story of how investigators caught one of them. It took two years and dozens of people to track him down, and the case is now considered one of California’s exemplary wildland arson investigations. Golden State Plate: Food History Made in California

Listen to this and more in-depth storytelling by subscribing to The California Report Magazine podcast. Diets always seem to make it to the top of New Year’s resolution lists. But if that sounds like you, you might want to put that on hold, at least for today. This week on The California Report Magazine, we take a listen to some of the most appetizing stories from our Golden State Plate series, where we explore the history of some of the iconic food and drink born right here. The Unsavory History of Green Goddess Dressing You can find Green Goddess dressing in pretty much every grocery store in America. But The California Report’s Sasha Khokha found that even though Green Goddess might evoke a wholesome image, its origins aren’t that. The Story of the Martini, Straight Up, With a Twist The martini is one of those old-school drinks that comes to mind when you hear the word cocktail. It’s iconic, from James Bond, the glass it’s served in, to its own emoji. Its roots are in California but as Bianca Taylor found out, exactly where the cocktail was invented, how it got its name, even what it’s made of, is where it gets muddled. Where in L.A. Was the French Dip Born? Probably at Philippe’s We head to Los Angeles, where there are more than 26,000 places to eat. One of those is a family-owned business that’s been serving hungry Angelenos for over 100 years. Reporter Peter Gilstrap brings us the story of the French Dip, a sandwich that’s been a fixture of L.A. cuisine and beyond since the end of World War I. The True History of Irish Coffee and Its San Francisco Origins Four parts coffee, a couple of sugar cubes, two parts whiskey, topped with heavy cream. The Irish Coffee is the perfect nightcap. And one of the most well-known places to get one is at the Buena Vista in San Francisco. This corner bar located right in front of a cable car turnaround is often thought of as the birthplace of this iconic libation. But is it true? Our friends at the Bay Curious podcast, Kelly O’Mara and Olivia Allen-Price, check it out.
