What I am Reading

I read a lot of books - about 100 a year. Mostly non-fiction with the goal of reading to learn. What I am Reading podcast is where I'll read segments from a book that I find interesting interspersed with my own comments. Two goals for this podcast are 1) for me to practice reading naturally into a mic for my other podcast, and 2) sharing some really good books and how they've influenced me.

Move Your Bus by Ron Clark - Part 5 (Riders)

This week I'll be reading excerpts from the book Move Your Bus by Ron Clark. Part 1 provides an overview of why an organization is like a bus and why it's important to get everyone moving in the same direction. Part 2 covers Runners - how to manage, how to support, and how not to break their spirit. Part 3 covers Joggers - how they can play a supporting role, how they can step up their game, and how to manage them. Part 4 covers Walkers - why they want to slow everyone else down, how they impact an organization, and whether they can speed up or not. Part 5 covers Riders - how they stay employed, clues to identify one in your organization, and whether it's even worth trying to get them to speed or not.

Move Your Bus by Ron Clark - Part 1

This week I'll be reading excerpts from Move Your Bus by Ron Clark. I'm trying to improve by management skills. The author's analogy is that it is important for an organization (the bus) to get all of its employees moving in the same direction, and moving fast. The author covers 4 types of employees -- Runners, Joggers, Walkers and Riders -- with the Driver of the bus being the manager or leader. Part 1 covers the why an organization is similar to a bus and introduces the four types of employees.
