Dr. Rossi’s special guest this week is Dr. Kathleen Heaney, Associate Director of Scientific Marketing Affairs at Merck Animal Health. Dr. Heaney explained how Merck’s new flea and tick treatment product Activyl works. Activyl features Indoxacarb, a chemical totally unknown to fleas, and for which there is no known resistance. This new chemical undergoes bioactivation, in which enzymes inside the flea activate the lethal nature of the chemical. The property of Activyl makes it a unique and effective product for use on both dogs and cats. Dr. Heaney then described Activyl Tick Plus, which adds the tick controlling power of permethrin. Previous studies have shown that there is a definite correlation between the presence of infected dogs and the number of human Chagas’ Disease cases in Latin America. Hence, clients with dogs in rural areas of the US should be aware of the risk for this disease, even though it is believed to be rare in the US. The Barking Lot is one of the new wave of dog boarding facilities that maintains dogs with minimal caging, or boarding without borders! Dr. Rossi’s guest this week is Dr. Alan Weldon, a Board Certified Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialist. Dr. Weldon’s special interest lies in solving difficult medical mysteries. To that end, he has become extremely proficient in performing ultrasounds. Scores of veterinarians from South Carolina to Florida call upon him to help diagnose difficult cases. He began with Holiday Warnings, and listed a wide variety of foods that may be harmful to your pets, as well as Christmas Hazards, and even gave a recent example from his own practice. Dr. Rossi’s guest this week is Dr. Kandra Jones, a veterinarian with 35 years of experience. She is also a member of the Florida Board of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Jones shared with us some of the changes that have occurred in veterinary Medicine over her years of practice. These include the improvements in anesthesia and in-house laboratory equipment, among others. Veterinarians now commonly use ultrasound and other diagnostic tools that heretofore were not available. However, Dr. Jones then discussed how current economic pressures are affecting modern veterinary practice. Because many pet owners are struggling financially, they cannot afford the best that veterinary medicine offers. This led to a lively discussion between the doctors about the challenges to maintain high quality veterinary medicine despite economic upheaval. These included: aggression towards people and other dogs, separation anxiety, and destructive behaviors. Dr. Rossi’s guest this week is Patty Honcoop, an avowed animal rescuer, who specializes in ferrets and opossums. Patty shared with us many of the unique problems related to ferrets, and their often high-maintenance costs. She points out that many people are not aware of this high-maintenance cost and shirk their responsibilities to older ferrets. The economic situation that we’re in has only seemed to worsen this trend. This has resulted in a tremendous financial, physical, and emotional drain for her, which she shares in common with all animal rescuers. Dr. Rossi’s guest this week is Paul Studivant Division Chief with St. John’s County Animal Control in Florida. Paul is an 18 year veteran of the department, and shared with us many common misconceptions that people have about animal care and control. He says that it is often a thankless job, and can be very difficult, but that deep down he knows that he’s helping the animals that he works with. His favorite task is reuniting a pet with it’s owner, and he reminds us all that micro chipping is an invaluable tool in making that happen. He also related 2 amazing stories from his long career working with animals. In addition, he explained how the economic downturn has affected animals in his department. In the last three years, there has been a 33% increase in abandoned animals, and a 25% increase in surrendered animals! At the same time, his budget has been reduced by 25%. It was a sad and shocking reminder of how animals are affected by our politics. Dr. Rossi also discussed homemade diets for pets, and what you need to be careful about when you make them. Then he shared a study that showed that bullying among children was reduced when dogs were maintained in the classroom. Dr. Rossi’s guest this week is Dr. Katrina Toshach, a board certified veterinary internal medicine specialist. Dr. Toshach’s special area of interest is veterinary endocrinology and she discussed in detail some of the more common hormonal diseases of dogs and cats. She mentioned the importance of diet in managing some of these disease, as well as the use of certain medicines and other treatment modalities including radioactive iodine therapy for the treatment of thyroid disease. Dr. Rossi’s guest this week is Nate Ferguson, a co-owner of Paw Prints Pet Crematory. Nate discussed difficult decisions that need to be made when a beloved pet passes away. These options include cremation or burial in a pet cemetary, or at home. The benefit of pet cremation is that it allows one to keep their pet close to them, indefinetly. He gave a detailed description of the process, and mentioned how they insure quality control. Nate shared other memorial services that they provide, include making an impression of your pet’s paw or foot, or saving a lock of fur, and other mementos. It became obvious that Nate is an animal lover and that is what led him to the business, reminding us that our pets are often considered to be members of our families. Dr. Rossi also discussed another study that showed the benefits of having pets in the household of a young child. Other topics included, causes for excessive water consumption by cats, and how to determine what your dog might be allergic to, including the most common allergens.
