Win Win Parenting – Shared Parenting: Fathers stepping up and Mothers letting go
Episode in
Win Win Parenting – Dr. Rosina McAlpine
Do you find you’re disagreeing with your partner about how to parent? Do you feel like you’re doing most of the parenting and your partner has checked out? Do these conversations sound familiar?
“Stop winding up the kids before bed… they’ll never fall asleep!”
“You ‘baby’ the kids, stop being so over protective – let them fall over and they’ll learn.”
“You only want to have fun with the kids, what about homework and helping around the house … that’s all left to me!”
“Oh it’s just a little bump on the head – stop fussing!”
“You’re never around – these kids only have one real parent… Me!”
I remember when I first brought Cameron home, I admit it – I was an over protective mother – even when it can to Cameron’s dad! I was constantly at my husband saying things like: “don’t hold him like that” Don’t throw him in the air – he’s just eaten”, “Don’t be so rough – he’s just a baby!” Until my generally calm, fun husband said “OK it seems I can’t do anything right, everything has to be YOUR way, so just do it yourself!” Now that made me think and of course do some research about how mothers and fathers parent – and yes you guessed it – they parent differently!
Today on the show I have Charles Areni one of the authors of a fascinating book on this topic called “The other glass ceiling: fathers stepping up and mothers letting go” Many of us are aware of the ‘glass ceiling’ in the corporate world where women come up against many barriers and don’t experience equality in the workplace. This book explores the “other glass ceiling” the one that men experience at home when women create barriers to fathers participating in raising their children. This is a fascinating and ‘hot topic’ that both mothers and fathers can relate to. Listen in and have a laugh as well as learn strategies to make lasting changes that will support a more cohesive family.

Win Win Parenting – How to Thrive during the Teenage Years: Practical Advice for Parents and Teens
Episode in
Win Win Parenting – Dr. Rosina McAlpine
We all know that the teenage years can be very volatile. This is a time when both parents and teens feel like they are in opposition and often can’t find connection! There’s so much going on inside a teenager physically, emotionally and psychologically so that things can feel out of control and can get out of control in a flash.
Parents can be on the receiving end of emotional outbursts like “I hate you!” “I hate myself!” “My life sucks” “Everyone is always against me” “Can’t you just leave me alone?” These are common feelings for teens who are trying to find their way in the world – where they are torn between breaking away from their parents and becoming independent as well as wanting to be part of a social group.
It can be so confusing for everyone and it’s a huge challenge for a parent to stay calm during explosive times when you know you’re doing the best you can with a busy and stressful life and then your child is rude, disrespectful and unappreciative! Under these conditions, is it even possible for teens and parents not just to survive but to thrive during the teen years?
Today my guest is Tracey Tresidder who is the co-founder of Coaching 4 teenagers. Tracy Tresidder is an executive, life and family coach, Tracy holds a number of qualifications including Masters Degree in Education and a Professional Development Certificate in Coaching Practice from the University of Sydney. Most importantly, as a family coach she has been able to transform parents’ relationships with their teenagers – in only a matter of weeks. And here is the Win Win, with Tracy’s support teenagers become more responsible, trusting, respectful and capable members of the family and parents begin to enjoy their teenagers again.
The practical ideas in this show will help teenagers to overcome some of their biggest challenges by learning how to:
manage their volatile emotions
develop a stronger and more positive sense of self
reduce the conflict with their parents and others and
communicate in a way that they feel heard, especially by their parents
ALSO, in this show parents can navigate some of their biggest challenges with their teens by learning how to:
improve the communication and connection with their teen
focus on and nurture their teen’s strengths rather than only pointing out weaknesses
effectively managing teen’s ‘obsession’ with technology
inspire their teens to become cooperative and responsible members of the family and
The theme for today’s show is how to thrive during the teenage years. So whether you’re struggling as a teen to find your way or whether you’re a parent at your wits end, listen in to get loads of practical advice on making the most of these challenging years.

Win Win Parenting – Understanding the Teenage Brain: Why your teenager seems erratic, emotionally unstable, unrespo...
Episode in
Win Win Parenting – Dr. Rosina McAlpine
Are you raising one or more teenagers, and are they argumentative, volatile and even down right disrespectful? Are you wondering who took your sweet child away and delivered a teenager who’s mood can go from ambivalence to rage in a split second over the simplest of comments or questions?
According to brain researchers, this volatility is a normal part of adolescence. Much of the brain development that occurs during the teen years is focussed in the areas that support adults to control their behaviour, to regulate their volatile emotions, and recognise and evaluate the risks and the rewards of the circumstances people find themselves in and the choices they make.
Have you heard the saying the teenage years are like putting a fast car without breaks in the hands of an inexperienced driver… this is often the analogy used regarding the teenage brain.
Basically, teenagers feel compelled to experience and experiment with the unknown which often includes exploring sex and relationships, fast cars, smoking, drinking alcohol and even taking drugs – their motivation to try new things precedes the brain development for regulatory competence – that is – their desire for experiencing the new and exciting is greater than their ability to control these impulses based on the negative consequences that can result from risky behaviours.
So if you’re feeling confused and stressed about how to keep your teenager safe, have more peace in your home and basically have a better understanding of your teenager, then sit back and try to relax as I interview Wendy Middlemiss PhD, Associate Professor in Educational Psychology, at the University of North Texas.
This show is filled with down to earth practical tips that work and you’ll learn:
The key aspects of teen brain development so you understand your teenager’s feelings and impulsive behaviours.
Why adolescents think and make decisions differently to adults.
How teenagers seem to be compelled to engage in risky behaviours
How you can help your teenager navigate sex, alcohol and drugs safely
The ways you can stay close and talk to your teens about what is going on in their life
Practical tools to help your teenager make responsible choices when you’re not there!

Episode in
Win Win Parenting – Dr. Rosina McAlpine
Do you struggle to get your children off the internet? Is there a daily fight?
Accessing the world through the internet is common for most families today. Even very young children enjoy games and you tube videos and can get VERY upset when asked to stop! Older children also enjoy games as well as connecting with others through social media. BUT…are you worried that your children are accessing harmful and inappropriate content or meeting up with predators online? Are you worried they are spending too much time on the internet?
With most children on the internet and so much harmful content out there that they shouldn’t be exposed like pornography and graphic violence it’s crucial to protect them. BUT you can’t be watching your kids 24/7 so what can you do?
Today, the internet is an integral part of lives and there’s access to it in most homes. A little of the right kind of access for kids can be of great benefit – educationally and socially. However, many children spend far too much time on the internet – well over the recommended guidelines and are interacting with the wrong kind of content and this can result in long term harms.
Do you find it hard to get your children off the internet? Are you worried they’re accessing dangerous people, harmful information or inappropriate content?
So as a worried parent, what can you do?
Join Dr Rosina, entertaining and educational parenting expert as she interviews Steven Pack, developer of KoalaSafe a device that helps you to keep your children safe while they are on the internet.
Rather than worrying about your children being on the internet or banning access, today’s show is all about how your children can be on the internet in a healthy, safe and educational way. This show is filled with practical tips that work.
In this interview you’ll learn:
How you can set an internet schedule so you don’t have to nag the children to get off!
How to prevent your children accessing inappropriate information while online.
How you can monitor your children’s access and the benefits of knowing what and who your children are interacting with online.
What parents can do to make being online educational and safe for kids
Internet security devices like KoalaSafe allow parents to set time-limits, offer parental insights (so they can see what their children have accessed and for how long) as well as app & site blocking – across all devices in the home.

Win Win Parenting – Practical Tips for Talking to your Children about Sex and Sexuality from Toddler to Teenager
Episode in
Win Win Parenting – Dr. Rosina McAlpine
Do you find it hard to talk to your children about sex? Are you embarrassed, confused not really knowing what or how to even start the discussion? As parents we all realise our children need to know about sex and understand their sexuality, but it isn’t an easy conversation – so we often deflect it or avoid it all together. BUT, if you don’t talk to your children about sex, they’ll get their information from someone or somewhere else – and that’s a highly risky strategy because you don’t know what they learn about sex and how it will shape their beliefs and attitudes towards sex –and of course ultimately their sexual experiences in the world.
Well, if you don’t know how to start – don’t fear – join Dr Rosina, entertaining and educational parenting expert as she interviews Amy Lang who is an author and sexual health educator and enjoys helping parents have the sex talk with their kids from tiny tots to teens. You can find out more about Amy, her books and her programs at her website.
Today is all about learning how to have easy and open sex talks with your kids.
In this show you’ll learn:
How to introduce the topic to very young children – including how to answer ‘that’ awkward question many kids have – “Where did I come from?”
Explaining sex and sexuality to older children – including how to get them to talk to you and understanding the benefits of conversations with both mum and dad.
The keys to raising well-balanced and responsible teenagers by talking about sex, pregnancy, contraception, relationships and intimacy for boys and girls.

Persistent or extreme childhood and adult mental illnesses and other behavioural disorders are often treated with medications. Win Win Parenting – Your Parenting Style: How it Affects Your Partner and Your Child
Episode in
Win Win Parenting – Dr. Rosina McAlpine
Calling all “Helicopter Parents, Tiger Mums, Bulldozer Parents, Workaholic Dads and Free Range Parents…”
Are you an easy going kind of parent or do you like to run a ‘tight ship’ and keep everyone and everything in order? And what about your partner are they the same or completely different and if they’re different does it drive you crazy sometimes? You say to your child “no snacks until after dinner” and you turn around and your partner is munching on a chocolate bar and sharing it with your child!
Every parent has their own style or approach parenting which, if we’re honest, is mostly its automatic – you don’t have to think much about it – it’s just who you are. And if that works for you and your family – that’s great! BUT what if your parenting style clashes with your partners’ approach to raising your children and what if you and your children can’t seem to get along – you just don’t seem to get where they’re coming from?
Today my guest is going to shed light on how your approach to parenting affects your child and your partner, and she’ll offer ways you can increase your awareness on your parenting style. Most importantly, you’ll get great practical tips on how you can become more flexible and more capable so you can develop your own resourcefulness (Tracy calls this ‘self-mastery’) and build strong relationships with the people you love most in the world.
Tracy Tresidder is an executive, life and family coach and co-founder of Coaching 4 teenagers. Tracy holds a number of qualifications including Masters Degree in Education and a Professional Development Certificate in Coaching Practice from the University of Sydney. She’s the author of the book – “knowing me knowing them” which is available on Amazon, and her approach is a Win Win for families. By using the enneagram which is a tool that helps people understand their personality type – she transform parents’ relationships with their children and parent’s understanding of each other – in only a matter of weeks.
In this show you’ll learn:
What the Enneagram is
Why the enneagram is beneficial to understanding your parenting personality
That each personality type offers an opportunity for self-mastery
How you can use parenting personalities to support your child’s potential
How it changes the lives of parents and families: stronger connections and better relationships.
A few weeks ago, I interviewed Tracy about “How to thrive during the teenage years: practical advice for parents and teens” Make sure you listen to that interview with your teen – it’s full of great ideas for parents and teens. Win Win!
