Jason is one of the best examples of what is possible when the right direction and perspective is chosen in pursuit of a career. Here is some of what we cover in our talk. Next generation, Father, Kim brought him in to pass the torch Jason started in automotive, didn’t like it At the end of a project you have something you built with your own hands and that’s really rewarding Owning your own business provides freedom, along with a lot of responsibility As an owner, you get to decide how much you make and how much you don’t Lots of friends wit the college route The trades are dying because of the push for education What does he advise someone about to go to college? Education is important, but how you get that education counts, experiential is better A note to parents: Jason describes the “countdown to retirement” mindset and how so many hate their life, his dad doesn’t hate his life! If the kids don’t like the academics, don’t be afraid to “test the waters”. Builders keep everything running, without them society would stop Vision for the future: the opportunity is there and waiting Personally wants to stay small to keep a high quality of work and production Small business with quality work! What do I like about building? Well, you start with a blank sheet and at the end you have a masterpiece. – Jason Katwijk You can find Jason and his work at their website by clicking right here. I would like to stay in touch with you. I regularly send out helpful business and marketing strategies and ideas to help you make a great plan to better your business. Know this. I will never share your email or info with anyone else. Meet the Makers Series, Interview with Rick Arnold

(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){ (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o), m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m) })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-50816207-1', 'auto'); ga('send', 'pageview'); Interview with Rick Arnold At the JLC Live Northwest event, my first item of business was my interview with Rick Arnold. Published author, business owner, and teacher, Rick was the perfect person to interview and set the feel and tone for me that JLC Northwest would be. Rick is the owner of R Arnold and Sons Construction. His introduction to the trades was his 8th grade shop class. As Rick himself states, he didn’t really choose construction. He first went into the military and after that went to college. His college went on strike, so he got a job and never looked back. Topics in this interview Issues as a  business owner, tough to get help His son seeing the same issues Rick says that they are not even after highest quality and most skilled, just want people to show up Rhode Island (his home state) looked down upon skilled tradesmen, a last chance dumping ground, not college material. Trades need craftsmen and businessmen and women Easy to get into business, exciting when you do, and make profit and good life If everything else fails, tradesmen always have their trade to fall back on to support their family  Educators, Rick says if he can do it, anyone can Rick is mostly self taught, he had plenty of help learning his trade and business, trades have lots of opportunities, professionalism, practices, no matter what you do, if you do it well, you will succeed, opportunity is out there if you can hustle and do good work Night school to fill in gaps, Rick pursued courses in basic accounting, forecasting and tracking, identified weaknesses in his business after, and then marketing. Shortfall, saw others jump ahead because they were better marketers What is his approach to finding good help? Go to high schools, speak to teachers, motivated and willing to learn, take on younger people who YOU can train, they can become highly valuable employees. Links to Rick Arnold’s work: Rick Arnold in the Journal of Light Construction Rick Arnold in Fine Homebuilding Rick Arnold in This Is Carpentry I would like to stay in touch with you. I regularly send out helpful business and marketing strategies and ideas to help you make a great plan to better your business. Know this. I will never share your email or info with anyone else. Ending 2015 and Bringing in 2016

(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){ (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o), m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m) })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-50816207-1', 'auto'); ga('send', 'pageview'); End of 2015 and Bringing in 2016! Lots of change this year With change, the takeaways: You can achieve what you dream of if you pursue it and work Change isn’t easy Different takes commitment and willingness to let other things go Life is too short to waste your time with things that don’t matter Make the most of what you have been given, work to make a life of merit Work Strong America The need is great, and the need is this In America, the trades are dying Our young people think educational conformity is the only shot at success We need them in the trades, for current business and industry to survive For their chance at growing a successful life to be realized Millennials are the first generation whose standard of living WILL BE less than their parents What is being tried now, and has worked in the past is no longer effective Time to draw that line in the stand and take a stand If you have a small business, be the best you can, succeed and be profitable. Quit doing things in a half assed manner. Learning, changing and growing are critical. Industry, this is as much your problem as the small guy. This will make or break you in the future Sears is closing its doors because it didn’t pay attention to change You people wanting in: The opportunity is now, and before you. You can make a great life, with huge potential, especially if you want to own your own business, or understand that you can become a vital and key partner in an existing business. Military possibilities. End 2015 and begin 2016 with this in mind. Talk and ideas only get anyone or anything so far. Action and execution are what matter. You have to be very clear on the problem you are trying to solve, who needs your help, and how you will provide a real and successful solution Planning and strategy are hugely important Training up the areas you need for growth is critical, all the time. If you are not training, learning and growing, you are dying Be nimble and actionable. If something is slowing down your progress, find out why? Are you on the wrong path? Are you trying to work outside of your strengths? Are you wasting time on things that are really not important? Do you have good mentors and counsel? Are you measuring your progress to see what is working and what isn’t? Can you and are you able to make changes, and not allow history and pride to hold you back? I would like to stay in touch with you. I regularly send out helpful business and marketing strategies and ideas to help you make a great plan to better your business. Know this. I will never share your email or info with anyone else. Gary Katz and Scott Wells Interview JLC Live Northwest

(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){ (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o), m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m) })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-50816207-1', 'auto'); ga('send', 'pageview'); Gary Katz and Scott Wells You take interviews when and where you can. This one was recorded over breakfast with Gary Katz and Scott Wells. Listen in and let me know what you think. Below is a brief of our conversation, and below I’ll add the links to both of their websites.   Scott- took break from college, figured if he learned a trade he would always have that to fall back on. Assistance getting contractor license and had help from builder to obtain it. Gary- BA in Liberal arts, wanted to be a great writer: Father was a “paper contractor” and so was the majority of his family. Loved “seeing” what he had built. Driven to improve on the techniques as well as learning the history. Imagine something, and then the attempt to actualize. Attracting young people? Outreach! Not self perpetuation. Higher education is a business Craftsmanship, income, nice living, Potential to own business JLC Live is microcosm of the trades, very few trainees at the show, or in the trades. Finding employees is the issue right now. Training, and the attitude of a professional Would prefer to hire someone with not a lot of skill but is trainable Not looking for the person who just wants to punch the clock and check out Supporting higher education, doing nothing but supporting higher education WHO these young people find as employers is just as precarious as finding good help How to train employees? Treat them respectfully, develop systems, teach efficiently and quickly to pass on and develop a sense of purpose and achievement. Don’t reinvent the wheel, use training and systems that are out there.   You can find Gary Katz websites by clicking here. You can find Scott Wells by clicking here. Join me. We all need your help in this. “Successful people do what unsuccessful peopleare not willing to do. How do Remodelers and Builders find good help? WSA Episode 18

In this episode I answer an email from a member of our military looking to transition into becoming an electrician. Then, I relay a conversation I heard at the JLC Live Northwest between builders and trade school students about what each is seeking from the other! First off sorry for the formatting I’m doing this from my phone at work. A little background I am transitioning out of the military and am looking to get into being an electrician. I have zero experience but this just seemed like something I would enjoy. I just started listening to your podcast and I have heard you say multiple times if you see someone with all new tools you would run them off the work site. This is my biggest worry breaking into this field. How do I get experience if I need experience to get started? I have applied to the electrician union apprentice program and to a few local construction companies. Do I need to finish a trade school before I apply to these apprentice electrician positions I see online? Thank you for the show.   -Andrew Students: How do we find a good contractor? Website: information, technical (beyond homeowner), Instagram Progressive building techniques Organization, both business and trade Appearance and professionalism Builders: Where do I find good help? Universities and trade schools. Don’t forget military. Desire good attitude and willingness to learn over background Work ethic, people just aren’t willing to work hard anymore trainability willing to learn THIS SPECIFIC builder’s approach This all applies to subcontractors, as well as business outside construction My interview with Ron Paulk My article on the JLC Live Northwest event Join me. Going to JLC Live Northwest – WSA Episode 17

I’ll be doing interviews and spreading the message of what Work Strong America is all about, and doing my best to represent the average tradesmen to the industry heavy hitters while I’m there. It has really struck me lately that most people in the industries and businesses that will be most affected by the skills gap rarely even give it a second thought. We are all busy, but no one will fix this dilemma for us. Here’s what I mean. Everyone out there is busy with life. Estimates, production, crew organization, scheduling subcontractors, ordering materials, dealing with clients, wife, kids, life, right? We are the ones that will be the most effected by the skills gap. We need young men and women who WANT to learn a trade and eventually open up their own business. Our own businesses and longterm livelihood depend on it! We have to do it ourselves. In our communities. No one is going to solve this for us. Not the government, not the schools, no outside organization. Just you an I.  You can’t do this alone. Neither can I. That is why I do this show, run this website, and work hard to spread this message. I need your help, and so does everyone else that is reading this. We have to come together to make the best plan possible, and then do it. We have to show America that the trades deserve as much respect and honor as any profession out there. We have to show them a solid business model, and opportunity to build a great, profitable, and successful business and life. We have to be the mentors. We have to teach the trades. We have to pass on the business skills. All very tall orders to be sure. It won’t happen all by itself, it will only come to pass with your involvement. Hopefully I’ll see you at JLC Live Northwest in Portland.  I’ll be wearing a Work Strong America t-shirt (see that fantastic logo above). If you see me, say hi! I’ll be glad to talk to you and even get a picture that I can post here after the show! See you all there, or somewhere… “Successful people do what unsuccessful people are not willing to do. How To Build Your Business and Educate Yourself – WSA Episode 16

(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){ (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o), m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m) })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-50816207-1', 'auto'); ga('send', 'pageview'); Business Basics/ Build Your Business and Educate Previous blog on How To Evaluate Your Business was a hit. Passed around on social media, kind of surprised me. (here is the link to the post on how to do a vision plan.) Who is the audience here? Bakers, electrical contractors, carpenters, salon and barber shop owners and barber shop owners, handymen, machinists, welders, landscapers, you name it! Anyone who provides a service, build something or work with their hands AND mind for their vocation and business. What’s the next step? Build on what you know, and use the rest of the information to educate yourself on what you need to focus on. Do the Work. Don’t get yourself in over your head. This isn’t only about technical capability. This also has to do with the type of client you work for. Knowing your limits is healthy, but you also need to grow and challenge yourself. Just do that in a way that won’t get you in trouble and jeopardize your work. Don’t take a project that you can’t afford to lose. Fiscal responsibility, legal protection, reputation, feeding your family. It is all valid and important. If you are just starting out, work smart and transition to a full time business. Learn much early on, and don’t burn bridges. If you are in an established business with fired up young people in your employment, LET THEM. Don’t inhibit their growth, and give them the option of turning these situations into a partnership.        Instead of looking at your good employees as a potential threat and something to be controlled, wouldn’t you like to be known as an entrepreneur incubator? Someone who turns out the “best of the best” of the next generations? Create systems. Listen, if you are not measuring, how will you know if you are winning? Succeeding? Able to actually pay the bills and keep the lights on? How long does it take you to perform _____? What are your material costs? Time spent? Can you become more efficient? Is there a better way? How do you know? This is for everyone, if you don’t have any, find mentors. There are people out there with so much experience and knowledge, people not necessarily IN your industry. But, there are also plenty who are. At some point, BE a mentor. See #4. Have an attitude of growth, lifetime education, and success. I don’t have time to teach average, and you don’t have time to practice it. To make sure that our trades/ businesses don’t go the way of the dodo, we have to focus on, bring in, and pass on to the best of the best of the next generations. As you know, we are all in this together. Before you can focus on the next generations, we must make sure that your business is in solid shape and profitable. Here comes The Makers Business Academy. What do I mean by Maker? Well, you don’t live a 9-5 life in a cubicle, and it would never be a good fit anyway. You provide the things that the rest of the people in your community needs. You are a Maker! To help you thrive and succeed, we are developing a series of online courses, templates and plans available to you to teach you the fundamentals of business. We will also offer the advanced topics of running a brick and mortar service business in a world where the market and our customers attention has changed. We need you to not only survive, but thrive, and become the business leader that your community needs you to be. Join the Work Strong America Makers Movement today! If you realize that you need better answers than what you have found, or you want to work out a better strategy plan, please sign up on the information below. We are in the middle of developing our “Makers Business Academy Basics” course. By signing up, you will have access to our Work Strong America weekly report where you get deeper information about the industry, your business, and how to bring up the next generations into the Skilled Trades and Business Ownership. If you have more specific questions, please contact me here. Thanks for listening! This show would not exist without you. I would like to stay in touch with you. What Happened and What’s Next WSA Episode 14

(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){ (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o), m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m) })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-50816207-1', 'auto'); ga('send', 'pageview');   If you want to conquer fear, don’t sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.- Dale Carnegie  Holy loong time late Batman, right? What happened and what’s next is a far cry of an understatement. I mean, the last time I released an episode here was September 4th, right? Well, here you go. As I said previously, we were at the time moving Seigmund Wurks Studios International headquarters to an as of yet undisclosed location. I jovially thought that I could finish a house remodel, pack up said home, ship what we just packed, and get on the road ALL the time keeping you all updated and creating content along the way. Not so much. Well, the house got finished, and sold. We got things packed We got things shipped we got on the road And that is where things went not quite as expected. Not complaining mind you, just acknowledging the facts. We traveled, saw a lot of fantastic and incredible things, had massive discussions ( a big continued conversation that we’ve been having) about where we wanted to end up. And why. And what exactly that looked like to us. Then we found a place and stayed. So, Seigmund Wurks Studios International has found a new headquarters, and our family has a new home base. If you want to follow along with the blow by blow travel journey as I get those updated, you can see them at my other site which is right here. There. So, the rest of the story is, we moved in, got unpacked (mostly) and set up shop. Where did we end up? Well, we are still somewhere in the great American West, a bit further north than before. If I let on any more than that, it wouldn’t be a secret headquarters would it? The rest of the podcast update is completely Work Strong America update oriented. We talk about you, and helping you in your business which frees you up to connect with your community, and help bring up the next generation. See, I still haven’t lost focus. I’m recommitting to a weekly podcast again, very regular blog posts, and real articles out there on the interwebs. By real publications. I will also be going to different conferences and trade shows throughout the year to meet up with industry leaders and connect with you if you happen to be there. Sound good? I think so! So, listen in, and let me know what you think! If you would like, send me a message by the “leave a voicemail” button over there on the right side of the page. BETTER YET, sign up for updates below. I regularly send out helpful business and marketing strategies and ideas to help you make a great plan to better your business. Know this. I will never share your email or info with anyone else. Charles Bukowski The Deseret News National Edition fills a void in the American media landscape through rigorous journalism for family- and faith-oriented audiences. Source: 7 reasons why millennials are unemployed and living at home | Deseret News National Today I searched for some current news about the skilled trades and/or the skills gap. I found Nothing That is a really big problem for such a really big problem. Then I found this article about millennials. So, in this episode, I cover this article that I just linked above. I tie the listed problems DIRECTLY to the big problem at hand related to the skills gap. And the fact that hardly ANYONE is talking about it. Listen in , and enjoy! Here are my counterpoints to the problems listed in this very good article. Get paid WHILE YOU WORK and LEARN!! Absolutely NO entry level jobs are scarce! See number 2, and what trades employers want to see are hustle, work ethic and Moxie! Fast rate of experience building and wage increases. Skills Gap, this is the BIG PROBLEM! Skilled Trades, work and have no student loan debt! Just Go To WORK! Life experience exemplifies your dreams! OH, by the way, I was interviewed on ANOTHER podcast! Go say hi to my friend Lauren. Here is the link to her site! http://www.higherscorestestprep.com/category/the-college-checklist-podcast/ I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it! So, from the INCREDIBLE interview that I got to do with Ron Paulk in Episode 10, I received comment from Robert Dailey asking for help, who has watched and followed Ron on his Youtube Channel.  So, here is some background about Robert. Robert worked construction Junior and senior high school, and VERY MUCH enjoyed it! He was excited to work, and learn at a young age! We live in America, the greatest country on the planet. Living here allows us all to make almost any choice we decide to create the life we are living. The problem is that we then allow our own choices to become the barriers that we well not cross to change our life’s direction. -Can’t remember.. Robert wanted to take a year between college and school, parents refused. Here is the deal, Roberts parents apparently did  NOT pay for his education, but INSISTED that he just go to college. Robert is now stuck with the bill for that. Listen, if you are old enough to vote and take a bullet for this country, you are old enough to say NO against a serious life affecting decision! So, this resulted in five years of college, buried in student loan debt at the end, which he is still paying for. Robert is now being a man and taking care of his responsibilities. He has a wife and children to support, as well as obvious financial obligations that he is doing what he must to take care of. Good job brother, because that is what real men do! Lets be really clear here, I’m NOT picking on Robert! He is the perfect example of what is becoming the new normal in America! He is leading by example, while still pursuing his dreams! So, he is a elf described DIYer, and currently helps friends with project and small remodels on his own house and others. He typically takes small jobs that no one else will do! So, here is Roberts question about his career change, in his own words. You talked a lot about reaching younger guys and encouraging them in the trades, how would you suggest an older person (not that I’m old, but have a family to support) get into the trades? I can do a little of most things, master of none. What do I recommend to Robert, and the others out there like him? Well, here we go! FIRST, talk with spouse. Clear the proverbial table, and give each other permission to voice whatever is on your mind. You need to achieve clarity and understanding, BEFORE you even get agreement. If your spouse is not on board, keep your day job. This is serious stuff! Get your Finances in order, this is first and foremost! I recommend Dave Ramsey, and to millennials i REALLY recommend my friend Joshua Sheats of Radical Personal Finance as well as the incredible Mr. Money Mustache. Your life will change! You can listen to my interview with Joshua Sheats right here, which I highly recommend! Start small with your work, like you are already doing with your small jobs that no one else will take. Get experience, learn much! Do you have a favorite skill/ interest? Consider all the aspects of the trades. In no particular order there is concrete, framing, plumbing, HVAC, painting, drywall, tile, siding, finish carpentry, welding, blacksmith to name a few.. Continue your education while small. Read good magazines and books! I will  link to my recommendations below. ALERT: My links below are affiliate links where I earn a very small commission if you make a purchase from the link. YOU will NOT be charged any additional money, and this is a small way that you can support this show and content. File HomeBuilding is one of my favorites. JLCmagazine and JLCOnline is a fantastic resource (same link, also this is NOT an affiliate link). Books are very important, and here are just a few of the books I personally use and recommend: JLC Field Guide to Residential Construction, Volume 1: A Manual of Best Practice Journal of Light Construction The JLC Guide to Production Carpentry The Journal of Light Construction Lead Carpenter Handbook: The Complete Hands On Guide To Successful Job Site Management Timothy Faller : This is CRITICAL if you intend to have employees Managing the Small Construction Business Journal of Light Construction Renovation 4th Edition: Completely Revised and Updated Michael Litchfield The Builder’s Guide to Running a Successful Constructi (For Pros By Pros) David Gerstel : This is the classic, and one of the best in my opinion. Keeping the Books: Basic Recordkeeping and Accounting for Small Business (Small Business Strategies Series) Linda Pinson : Learn it now, and keep it simple. This is LIFE AND DEATH! Code Check Complete 2nd Edition: An Illustrated Guide to the Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical Codes (Code Check Complete: An Illustrated Guide to Building,) Redwood Kardon : Keep things tight and right! Make sure you are working safe! This is a small list, and there are so many more, but this is a good start to begin an education of business and building basics. Find GOOD reputable contractor, start small, work to build up your skills and take on small tasks and projects. DO NOT overreach what you know, you WILL get in trouble. Take small steps, and get the basics down well! Save money, PAY TAXES, keep simple records with a pen, pencil and paper! Learn a lot, and NEVER stop! Get Your License!!!   Also, your appearance, speech and demeanor counts. If you want to work FOR professionals, be thought of as a professional, and think of yourself as a professional, you need to ACT and LOOK like a professional! Okay, with all this being said and all of this information before you, have fun. The trades and building are a fantastic career and business path. Being able to look at something tangible that YOU have built at the end of the day is very gratifying, and just plain old fun! So, for all of you looking for a career change, I hope this has helped! I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it! Please let me know what you think! Also, I would love to stay in touch with you and keep you informed about the latest podcasts and articles! I hope you enjoy this. As I said in this episode, please forgive my extreme lateness in posting! Lot’s going on, and great things on the way! A brief list of what you will hear: Stopped college to pursue building/finish carpentry Still uses psychology in dealing with clients (and trades) Importance of safety and efficiency in employees Severe lack of qualified candidates coming into the trades/ construction Mentorship is a necessity for all business owners to embrace Collaboration of businesses is the only way to really succeed. Finding like minded people who will be proactive in bringing up the next generations Young men and women NEED skin in the game, no matter what they pursue in their education and life. Learning a skill can only help long term Change the typical public perception of the trades to be truly seen as professionals To be viewed as a professional, you must act as a professional Encourage other contractors to teach through social media Encourage the use of new technology to attract young people http://www.paulkhomes.com/   https://www.youtube.com/user/crpaulk The post WSA Episode 10: Interview with Ron Paulk appeared first on Work Strong America - Empowering America's Next Generations of Craftsmen, Builders and Makers to Craft Our Future.

WSA Episode 009: Interview with Scott Hunter of Vedavoo!

(function(i,s,o,g,r,a,m){i['GoogleAnalyticsObject']=r;i[r]=i[r]||function(){ (i[r].q=i[r].q||[]).push(arguments)},i[r].l=1*new Date();a=s.createElement(o), m=s.getElementsByTagName(o)[0];a.async=1;a.src=g;m.parentNode.insertBefore(a,m) })(window,document,'script','//www.google-analytics.com/analytics.js','ga'); ga('create', 'UA-50816207-1', 'auto'); ga('send', 'pageview'); “If you can’t build something with your own hands, you don’t belong in business!” – Yvonne Chouinard- Founder of Patagonia  Scott Hunter, owner and founder of Vedavoo, graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2005. An avid rock climber, fly fisher, backpacker and all around outdoorsman, he wanted to have a business making bags, slings and packs for the outdoors. In 2007 he got the opportunity to go to Babson College, America’s premier college for entrepreneurs. After his graduation in 2009, Scott followed his passions to begin creating an American Made manufacturing company with products that would “last for a lifetime!” The common advise he kept hearing was that this “just couldn’t be done” and he would have to pursue manufacturing in Asia (read China). After fourteen hard months of research, Scott realized that it would be too expensive and cash intensive for his start up costs. Scott told me that he got an opportunity to meet Yvonne Chouinard of Patagonia at a trade show and speak with him. After explaining his idea for Vedavoo, Yvonne told Scott: “If you can’t build something with your own hands, you don’t belong in business!” Scott also got to meet Wayne Gregory, founder of Gregory Mountain Products who told him “You need to buy a sewing machine!” So, after this initial fourteen months and having $700.00 left in the bank, Scott bought a used sailmaker off Craigslist and some American sources material. With twelve dollars left in his account for an emergency fund, Scott went down in his basement and begin to learn how to sew. Scott, for the first time in fourteen months, felt more in control the moment he sat down at the machine than he ever had. With some firmly established concepts in mind and already having worked out the initial designs, Scott went to work. And, Vedavoo was born! Scott, through trying a lot of other products just never found anything current that worked for him. His focus became the passion to create solutions through simplicity. One of the great things about Vedavoo and their products is that they are one of the few companies that offer products for kids. Scott decided to do this because he wanted to instill a love for the outdoors in his own son, and give the best gift a father can, a life of example. And the name Vedavoo? His son picked it! It is the name of a state park in Wyoming that was Scott’s solace when he was going to school there. Vedavoo packs and bags are hand crafted and sources with American made materials. Each pack is hand cut and sewn. Scott also employs stay at home mothers and grandmothers who, after going through a training and quality program with Scott, are able to help provide for their family with flexibility of schedule and freedom. Vedavoo products are made with heirloom quality that can be expected to be passed down the generations. The best parts of this interview are Scotts insights into being an entrepreneur and the learning process and experience it provides. Scott’s advise to young men and women looking to have their own business? Focus on the craft. There is such a huge opportunity for American made products and services right now! Scott says that you should “get to 80%”! Meaning, do it yourself and get legs under it before you begin pursuing outside options! Scott ultimately sees entrepreneurship as America’s salvation for our economy and future!
