Episode #162: ADHD

We began our exploration of Neurodiversity in Coaching in episode 146, with a bit of an introduction to the topic and the terminology around both neurodiversity and neurodivergence. Today we want to venture a little deeper into one particular neurodivergence - ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to give it its full title. ADHD is a phenomenon that is receiving increasing attention within the coaching world and it is very likely that you will come across coachees that identify as living with ADHD. In this episode we take a look at some of the nuances of ADHD and Tom shares his own personal journey to gaining a better understanding of the topic and trying to sort out the facts from the theories. Episode #161: Deeper Coaching Presence

We have discussed both presence and absence in the coaching room in previous episodes, and today we want to venture a little deeper around the concept of presence in coaching. We all know when we have experienced someone who is fully present for us; someone who has listened and allowed us to feel heard and understood. Presence makes a difference. We will all have also experienced times when our coach has been a little distracted or not fully engaged. Coaching presence is such a powerful phenomenon and at the same time, something quite intangible, so we thought we'd try and define it for our listeners. Join us for this episode as we explore what coaching presence is, why it's important, and some ways in which you can cultivate a more powerful presence in your coaching sessions. Resources: Questions asked in this podcast: What prevents you from being fully present? What pulls you out of presence? How/What do you notice when your presence has slipped? Journaling Prompts: What pulls you out of presence? How is your Coaching Presence now? What supports and nourishes it? How do you want your presence to be? How do you know when you've slipped out of presence? What's the gap you are bridging? What gets in your way of being present? How do you want to be with yourself as you practice becoming more present? Enjoy the podcast? Episode #160: Coaching Tools: Questions from Stoic Philosophy

What have the Stoics ever done for us? Well apart from aqueducts, wine, irrigation, sanitation, the roads, medicine, public order and the baths, the Stoics also gave us a few different ways of thinking about events that we have no control over. The Roman stoics, Seneca and Marcus Aureleus and the Greek stoics, Zeno of Citium and Epictetus, along with a few other philosophers, used their ancient wisdom to unlock what was going on for their contemporaries. That same wisdom may provide novel ways of viewing our own environment and provide us with some alternative perspectives that could benefit us in our modern world. In this episode we explore three stoic questions that could help our coachees to move forward in their thinking. Join us as we explore a little stoic philosophy that we might choose to bring into the coaching space. Enjoy the podcast? Episode #159: Coaching Tools: Positive Psychology Interventions

Positive Psychology is a popular coaching approach with the doctors on our transformational coaching diploma. It feels uplifting to coach using positive psychology, but there is much more to the approach than just inviting people to smile more and see put a more optimistic spin on events. We've talked about Positive Psychology in previous episodes, and in this episode we dedicated to explore in more detail some of the research backed tools that are known as Positive Psychology Interventions or PPIs, and consider how they might be of use in the coaching room. Episode #158 - Coaching Topic: Work-Life Balance

A topic that is frequently brought to the coaching room in one guise or another is work-life balance. So, we're questioning to what extent work-life balance really exists and if we're working with someone who brings this to coaching, how do we support them in moving towards achieving more balance in their life. Episode #157: Some Psychological Terms To Help Raise Awareness of Your Coaching

In this episode we are exploring four different psychological phenomena that might just show up in the coaching room. They are concepts that originate in the world of psychoanalysis and therapy, and whilst their presence may well have been seen as problematic, they are also commonly occurring phenomena for ordinary people and information for us in the coaching room. The four concepts that we discuss in this episode are transference, counter-transference, projection, and parallel processing. Episode #156 - Coaching face to face versus online

Whether you are with your coachee or not when you're coaching them will depend on a number of variables, but there's a good chance these days that you are more likely to be in a virtual coaching room than sitting face to face with your coachee. Some telephone coaching still happens but not so much, these days. In this episode, we discuss the pros and cons of both ways of working, and some things to consider as a coach. Whether you prefer to be in the room where it happens or you embrace the efficiency of being coaching online this conversation provides you with the opportunity to reflect on the different ways of working as a coach. Episode #155: Belbin Team Roles

If you're talking to coachees about their role, their career or their work colleagues, you may find that they have quite narrow ways of viewing what works and what doesn't work in their team. They may view the way they go about things as the right way and can't understand why other team members don't just behave in the way that they do. They may express concern, or frustration, at their team members' varying attitudes towards the work that needs to be done. In this episode we explore why it's important to have some diversity of thought and behaviour within an effective team. Tom shares his knowledge of Belbin Team Roles, a concept and a tool that helps individuals and teams better understand how they might work more effectively together. The conversation highlights the need for complementary skillsets and different ways of individual team-members operating in order to develop a team that is both cohesive and performing well. Episode #154: Topics for Coaching Goalsetting and Planning

As transformational coaches we very much focus on self-exploration and self-acceptance for the coachee; challenging their current thinking and helping them explore new perspectives; supporting them in finding new ways to go about doing things and encouraging them to become more who they really are. That said, sometimes coachees may want to work towards a specific tangible goal, develop a realistic strategy or map out a practical plan, and, of course, we will look to coach them in planning and actioning their project and achieving their goal, whilst also inviting them to step back for a while and consider what the goal or plan means to them, and their future self. In this episode we explore where we might start working with a coachee's goals and share some tips on how you might support a coachee who is presenting with this kind of coaching scenario. Episode 153: Hope

Hope is one of the 24 VIA Character Strengths identified by Martin Seligman and Chris Peterson back in 2004 and included in the Values in Action inventory that they created. In this episode we explore how Seligman and Peterson defined Hope. We also introduce Rick Snyder's 'Hope Theory' and discuss other ways that we might consider the concept and how it relates to coaching. Tom provides a very personal account of his own relationship with Hope and his VIA Character Strengths report as life has unfolded over the last 7 years. We hope that our conversation on the topic will spark some ideas for you around the benefits of discussing Hope, along with other Character Strengths in the coaching room. Enjoy the podcast? Episode #152: A Review of Coaching Tools #2

Back in Episode 132 we revisited some of the tools that we had already explored on earlier episodes of the podcast. That episode went down very well, particularly among our own alumni, who found the episode to be a wonderful reminder of some of the tools that they learned on our Doctors' Transformational Coaching Diploma. In looking back we realised that we've explored around 30 different tools on the podcast in the last 3 years. So we thought we'd have a conversation about another batch of the useful coaching tools that we've explored on the podcast. In this episode you'll hear a quick review of: Conflict Styles Matrix Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs PERMAH & The PERMAH Wheel And we will be signposting you to the full podcast episode dedicated to each one. Episode #151: The Four Discourses of Coaching

When it comes to the way that coaching is approached and then discussed, there have traditionally been four different discourses that have become embedded in the coaching world. Simon Western, a leadership and coaching academic, identified the four discourses back in 2016 as being: - The Managerial approach The Psychological approach The Soul Guide approach The Network approach In this episode we explore the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and consider what other discourses have arisen in the last decade since Simon Western identified these four ways of seeing coaching. Episode #150 - Coaching Topic: Time Management

It is said that you can't manage time, you can only manage yourself, but we know that some topics brought to the coaching room, like overwhelm, making difficult decisions, unrealistic expectations, and boundaries, can often look like a time management issue. In this episode we talk through how we might help someone in the coaching space, and explore two activities that might be useful to undertake with our coachees. Hopefully, investing your time in listening to the podcast will be a worthwhile enterprise and leave you feeling more equipped to have time-management conversations in the coaching room. Episode #148 - Coaching Tools: The ABCDE Model

Coaching conversations are a great space in which to support individuals in engaging in a spot of meta-cognition; doing a little thinking about their thinking. With a little help, our coachees can explore their potentially unhelpful thinking around a scenario that is proving difficult for them. There are different ways of approaching such situations and various tools that we can utilise, as coaches, to support our coachee's thinking. One such tool is the ABCDE model, which has its origins in the work of one of the founders of the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach, Albert Ellis. In this episode, we explore the ABCDE model, which allows the coachee to take any given event; consider what beliefs they have about that event; explore what the consequences of their belief and their thinking have, for themself and those around them. Then, with the help of their coach, the coachee can dispute their own beliefs and reach a better emotional understanding and perspective. Join us, on this week's podcast, as we take a deep dive into the value and utility of the ABCDE model in the coaching room. Episode #147 - Coaching Approaches: Strengths Coaching

When coachees are facing difficulties in their work or home lives it's easy for them to spend their time in the coaching room in problem-talk. They often speak from a place of helplessness and a lack of resources. Using a strengths based approach can allow a coachee to connect with their own inner resources, and some external resources too, to allow them to think through their situation, find their own solution and move forward. In this episode we explore what a strengths approach looks like, what tools are useful in drawing out someone's strengths and when it might be useful to engage with this approach.
