4. The Daddy/Daughter(s) podcast

Hello and welcome to Episode 4 of Your Next BIG Speech. I promised myself I would put out an episode every week come hell or high water. Guess what? I have kids (which is an important part of the “parenting improves public speaking” schtick). But kids don’t leave you alone when you are trying to do something like record a podcast. So…I embraced it. Here’s a case of a dad and his two daughters trying to talk about how having fun with your kids can lead to you having more fun onstage. Instead, it derails quickly into snacks and pillow forts, leading to a rambling mess of awesomeness. Enjoy. 3. Stories from a Geek Dad

This week I talk about the power of stories and storytelling. I share a bit about how geeky I am and what this may mean to my poor little girls. I also share some basic principles of storytelling. But above all else, I continue to show you how parenting can make you a great public speaker. Or, if nothing else, at least demonstrate that the skills you use everyday as a parent can help with your next big speech. www.SteveSobie.com www.YourNextBIGspeech.com  Music:  “Life of Riley” and “Unpromised” Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

2. How Parenting Can Improve Your Public Speaking

My story is pretty straightforward. Professionally, I give a lot of presentations, roughly 40-50 a year. The presentations range from 30-second “elevator speeches” to full-day training workshops. Privately, I’m a parent of two young children. Recently, I’ve noticed that the behaviors, experiences, and techniques I use as a parent have begun to enhance my public speaking. For example, I’ve discovered that using silly voices and playing with my kids has improved my self-confidence, stage presence, and audience engagement. And that’s just the beginning…Public speaking is still classified as a major fear for most Americans. People don’t like doing it. By providing prospective speakers with useful insights and stories linking their daily lives to their next big speech, I think this podcast can be incredibly beneficial to parents and speakers, alike. Think of it as public speaking tips or public speaking advice for mom or dad. The key is simple – be clear, be concise, and be a bit irreverent. I’m taking my work experience and home life and trying something new. I’m bringing…Parenting & Public Speaking. 1. The Pooping Unicorn and the Fear of Public Speaking

For episode 1, let’s talk about unicorns…and glossophobia. Both are imagined, but one is way more real. Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking and it is the #1 fear of most people. Overcoming fear takes time and effort. There is no single best way to do it. But by using the techniques you use to calm your children’s fears, you may just have the perfect starting point to help address your own. It’s a start and sometimes starting is the hardest part. www.SteveSobie.com www.YourNextBIGspeech.com Music:  “Life of Riley” Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ “Cool Beans” Production Elements Fresh Music Library
