Cindy Wu was an undergraduate student at the University of Washington when she hit on a new way to reengineer an enzyme treatment for anthrax bacteria using a videogame. She eagerly approached her professor, asking how she could fund an experiment. “Cindy, the system doesn’t fund people like you, my professor said,” Wu recalls. “It only funds tenured professors.” Still, Wu’s professor funneled some funds from his grant for Wu’s research which is currently being followed up by the Army. But the experience stuck and Wu, now 24 abandoned a promising academic career to found Experiment.com, a crowdfunding science experiment platform with fellow scientist cofounders Denny Luan and Skander Mzali.

Jay’s experience spans several sectors with one common theme - using technology to solve important problems. Most recently, he worked at Microsoft as a Director of Bing Mobile strategy and business development, where he led a billion dollar search and commerce deal with Nokia. Previously, he improved systems and processes at a startup microfinance organization in Honduras, led manpower and process design as one of the first 25 members of the Transportation Security Administration, and helped launch a web content management startup. Jay received his MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.S. in Economics and Public Policy from Duke. Jay’s favorite book in high school was Of Human Bondage, because his teacher pushed him to constantly ask, “which is better to follow, passion or reason?” Maybe because of what happened with main character Philip, Jay tends to follow reason.

Amy Balliett has been using digital media to grow her own companies since she was 17, when she took on ownership of a combined arcade, ice cream parlor, and penny candy store near her hometown. With a career at the intersection of law, social entrepreneurship, and global development, Brian has worn many hats in recent years. He previously founded the Pacific Northwest’s first social enterprise law firm (Vox Legal) and taught the first law school classes on the subject at Seattle University Law School. More recently, he founded Impact Hub Seattle, a shared workspace and incubator for purpose-driven companies. He is an entrepreneur in residence at the University of Washington Center for Commercialization, and teaches global development and law at various graduate universities. Brian is an avid connector sitting on the boards or advisory committees of many influential organizations in Seattle. Brian's role at the Impact Hub brings hundreds of high quality resources to bear for projects

Dylan leads business development and user-experience, working with partners and contributing to Matter’s design. A designer and lover of flat design and san serifs, he’s worked for one of the world’s largest foundations and thinnest countries. He studied design at Cornell where he co-founded its first makespace and failed safety training (twice). When he’s not at the office, he’s trying to assemble IKEA furniture.

Ben is the founder of Tribewanted and was behind the success of Vorovoro Island and generated the media buzz around the project. Ben wrote a book about the first year of Tribewanted Vorovoro which was also filmed for an award winning BBC documentary series: Paradise or Bust. Ben went on to open John Obey Beach in Sierra Leone and Monestevole in Umbria with Filippo Bozotti. Alongside Tribewanted Ben has worked on creative development projects with larger brands and social enterprises - including Right to Dream (leadership development through sport in West Africa) and Escape the City (Unleashing frustrated corporates into fulfilling careers). Ben is a regular speaker on startups and social enterprise, a mentor to escapees and first-time entrepreneurs, and is a Founding Participant at THNK: The Amsterdam School of Creative Leadership. In 2014 Ben is exploring digital detoxes and curating a global treehouse community.

TOHL is a mobile infrastructure company. What that means is that they provide infrastructure, such as piping, to areas commonly inaccessible to provide them with water. Because of the lack of highways and means for trucks to get to some places, Ben and his co-founder began to brainstorm ways to bypass those restrictions. The answer: helicopters!
