Description of Sermon - Hope in the Cross - Luke 23:32-49

Sermon Series: Hope
Sermon Title: Hope in the Cross
Bible Passage: Luke 23:32–49
Preacher: Ian Morrison
Date: Good Friday, 18th April 2025, 9:30 am
On Good Friday, we gather at the foot of the cross to remember the darkest moment in history—yet the moment where our greatest hope was secured. In Luke 23:32–49, Ian Morrison will lead us through the final hours of Jesus’ life, as the innocent Son of God is crucified between two criminals.
As we watch the scene unfold, we see mockery, injustice, and unimaginable suffering. But in the midst of the darkness, something extraordinary happens. Jesus prays for His executioners, promises paradise to a repentant thief, and entrusts His spirit to the Father. At the moment of His death, the curtain of the temple is torn in two, and even a Roman centurion declares, “Surely this was a righteous man.”
This is the heart of the gospel: Jesus, the righteous one, died in the place of sinners. On the cross, He bore the punishment we deserve, so that we might be forgiven and reconciled to God. Hope is not found in our goodness, effort, or circumstances—it is found in the crucified Christ, who gave Himself for us.
Join us this Good Friday as we reflect on the cross, where sorrow and love meet, and where true, lasting hope is found. In the place of death, Jesus brings life. In the place of guilt, He offers grace. Come and behold the hope of the world—Jesus Christ, crucified for us.
