This week, we are joined by Dan Sutton, CEO at Tantalus Labs, Canada. Tantalus Labs was founded on a commitment to advancing the frontier of cannabis. They are a team of scientists, designers, and engineers committed to a bright, Sungrown reality, cultivating world-class BC cannabis in specialized, purpose-built greenhouses.
Together, we explore Tantalus’ unique approach to growing cannabis, the benefits of growing indoors, and the lifecycle of the cannabis plant.

EPISODE SUMMARY
Tantalus Labs are Cannabis producers and cultivators located in Vancouver, BC and are leading a cultural revolution in sustainable cannabis cultivation. They use the naturally occurring conditions found in beautiful BC to create an enhanced growing environment while reducing the negative impact on the planet’s resources.
Dan fell into the Cannabis business after working within economics, finance and energy for nearly a decade after he discovered opportunities within the Cannabis market in Canada.
Dan produces virtually pesticide free, legal, medical grade Cannabis.
Tantalus Labs have specifically engineered an indoor environment for growing Cannabis which has been named ‘SunLab’. It is the culmination of four years of design and construction. It leverages the minds of leading BC scientists, engineers, and agriculturalists, all on a mission to build a brighter future for cannabis. It was created at the intersection of optimized plant health and sustainable cultivation.
SunLab was designed to reduce the environmental impact of cannabis cultivation, which largely and historically relies on artificial light to provide the inputs for photosynthesis. SunLab uses natural full-spectrum sunlight as its main light source, reducing electricity requirements by up to 90% compared to traditional indoor growing. It is a truly revolutionary production method.
Once recreational cannabis was legalised in Canada, the same growing principles and quality assurance principles which were established for the pharmaceutical market were applied to crops grown for the emerging recreation market, meaning both markets are now being served with elite, quality products.
Tantalus produce Cannabis plants through propagation or ‘cloning’ where nodes or cuttings from a mother plant are taken and grown, making them genetically identical. The advantage of this method of reproduction is that the plant chemistry, including the CBD and THC content, other terpenes and flavonoids which give the plant its flavours and aromas are identical, meaning widespread quality assurance.
Plants from cuttings are grown within a vegetative state (The period of growth between germination and flowering) and can grow up to 9ft within the SunLab due to the carefully managed growing conditions. At the end of the vegetative state, the conditions are changed so that the plant perceives it to be the end of the growing season, and it will naturally flower. This means that within the greenhouse environment, four or five harvests per year are possible instead of just one which would be possible with outdoor cannabis production.
The flowering phase is when the plant will start to develop its buds and its flowers which exhibit trichomes which are the fine growths which collect on the buds and sometimes the leaves. Trichomes are often referred to as ‘sticky’, and hold the THC and CBD compounds.
