Hello & Welcome to the Imagine Belonging at Work Podcast brought to you by Rhodes Perry Consulting…I’m your host, Rhodes Perry.
The future of work has arrived, and it’s no longer business as usual. Emerging trends in business technology compounded with living through a global pandemic and rising calls for social and economic justice reawakening the labor movement ---- have transformed the way we live…and work.
As our workplaces undergo this metamorphosis, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to build and grow our belonging movement. Many of us are ready for this new workplace to center on our purpose and passion. Where we can show up and be respected for who we are, just as much as what we bring to our work…where our work can be just as good for us, as we are for it…where we get what we need to do our best work…and where we feel authentically connected to our colleagues…that’s the future of work where each of us can truly belong.
To get there, we have to remain vigiliant about what we are truly up against. The social and political climate continue to sow division and polarize many parts of our lives…including the workplaces. Those of us most likely to experience the sting of social exclusion at work – feeling invisible, discouraged, disconnected, and even shame – feel an increased threat in physical and emotional harm when going out into the public sphere, including the workplace.
In order to successfully build our belonging movement – a movement capable of transforming ourselves, and our workplaces, we have to do our best to live with one foot in the world we have, as we place the other in the world we have yet to create. It’s for this reason that I couldn’t imagine a better guest than Mary-Frances Winters to help us recognize how the DEI movement has evolved over the past 4 decades, and the potential it has to fundamentally transform this significant aspect of our lives.
Mary-Frances is the founder + CEO of the Winters Group, a 40-year-old global diversity, equity and inclusion consulting firm. She truly believes that DEI work is her “passion and calling.” Dubbed a thought leader in the field for the past three decades, she has impacted over hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals with her thought-provoking message, and her masterful approach to this work. Mary Frances is also the other of four books, including her most recent, “We Can’t Talk about That at Work!: How to Talk about Race, Religion, Politics, and Other Polarizing Topics.”
During this special 3 episode learning series with Mary-Frances, she will put into perspective the origins of the DEI movement, her four decades of DEI thought leadership, and what she’s learned along her journey, and her vision for what the future of work holds. As you listen to Mary-Frances’ wisdom, I have a feeling you will gain added inspiration and motivation to establish your own bold vision for the future of your workplace as you gain valuable insights and inspiration to build the stamina you need to transform yourself as you advance your DEI goals.
In this first episode of the learning series, you’ll get the opportunity to learn more about Mary-Frances and how she started the Winters Group. She describes what the world of work was like over 40 years ago, when most workplaces were focused on complying with EEO policies and staying out of legal trouble. Mary-Frances also offers her perspective on how workplace DEI goals have and haven’t evolved over the past 4 decades, and what DEI professionals of today can learn from our predecessors.
Then during the second episode of this 3-part learning series, we’ll begin taking a peek into what the future of work could be as we give ourselves permission to establish a bold vision for what’s to come. We also explore how to identify and work around some of the biggest obstacles the stymie this vision. Then we’ll use proven strategies to begin upending these obstacles…Today!
