We are all in constant need of help from Hashem. If someone has a pressing need and is hoping for immediate assistance, it’s a good idea for him to accept upon himself to improve in a certain area of religion to enable, kavayachol, Hashem to give him the help that he needs. One way to gain an abundance of merits would be to improve in attitude. If you are a person who complains and asks Hashem, “Why aren’t You giving me what I want? It’s not fair, everybody else gets everything and I don’t.” You could accept to become someone who’s more trusting. Someone who says, “If You didn’t help me yet, Hashem, it must be for my best. You’re always looking out for my best interests. I’ll be happy with the situation that You put me in.” An even bigger merit would be if it seems that what you’re hoping for will not happen anymore and you still accept with emunah that Hashem knew better, that could provide such an enormous merit, it could very well be the catalyst to bringing about a yeshua, even though it seems hopeless. But there’s a condition, it can’t be that you’re only accepting in the hope that things will change, because that’s not a real acceptance. It has to be that you’re accepting, knowing that things would remain status quo. Someone emailed that, after many years of waiting, he was finally approved to receive financial aid from the government to cover his rental expenses. The voucher he got would expire in six months, so he had to find a new apartment by then. He and his wife exerted a lot of time and energy, but they couldn’t find anything that would suit their family. Then, there was just a few days left, and they still hadn’t found anything. So finally, with no choice, they settled on an apartment much smaller than the one they currently lived in. There were many inconveniences associated with this apartment. They also found out that there’s a dog next door whose loud barks can be heard from their apartment all the time. It bothered them a great deal, but they worked hard to strengthen their emunah. They said, “If this is all we could find, then it must be this apartment is best for us. We don’t see the bigger picture. We’ll trust Hashem, and we’re going to be happy here.” They then thanked Hashem for all the good that He has always given them and continues to give them. Just minutes before they signed the lease, someone called them and said a super apartment was available. It was much bigger and much nicer, and they ended up taking that one and they couldn’t be happier in it. They truly accepted the ratzon Hashem and that opened the door for a yeshua. Rabbi Yechiel Spero told a story of a couple who finally had their first baby after nineteen years of marriage. Their joy knew no bounds. Their friends and family were so happy for them. However, their excitement was short-lived. The same day the baby girl was born, she was stricken with a deadly virus and the unthinkable occurred. For nineteen years they waited for a child and, suddenly, their life-long dream was taken from them. The mother asked to hold the baby and, after thirty minutes of tears, she told her husband she wanted to give the baby a name. They made a Misheberach and called the baby Emunah. The mother explained, every time she would think about her baby, she wanted to remind herself of the emunah that this was from Hashem. Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman heard about this story and went to visit this couple to give them chizuk. When he saw how much emunah they had, he cited the Sefat Emmet who says, if a Jew believes and trusts in Hashem, even during moments of pain and sorrow, then Hashem will allow that individual to see the light that emerges from the dark time. He then blessed them to have a healthy baby. And baruch Hashem, just one year later, they were holding a healthy newborn. After twenty years, they finally had their very own child to raise. First they had true emunah; they fully accepted, and then they saw a yeshua. The merits of emunah are enormous. And having emunah is within everyone’s capabilities.
