People who suffer from borderline personality disorder, otherwise known as BPD, are destabilized in their emotions. A common defense mechanism they use is "splitting" where they may overvalue a person and then devalue them at a later time. The effects on others is devastating because you never really know where they or you stand. People who suffer from this disorder have a fear of abandonment and suffer from chronic feelings of emptiness. They may latch on in relationships and never let go even when their significant other no longer wants to be attached. Acting out is not uncommon when they perceive real and or imagined abandonment. Cutting, substance-abuse and threats of suicide are some of the signs of their acting out behavior.
