First degree murder indictment against Nisbit The Grand Jury returned an indictment against Jason Nisbit. Rice County Attorney John Fossum repeated the indictment, “has been indicted by a Grand Jury with First Degree intentional premeditated murder and 2nd degree intentional murder”. The first degree murder charge carries life without the possibility of parole. Nisbit is accused of murdering 26 year old Chelsea Martinez after the two met on a website called The Experience Project. A troubled young mother, she drove up from Ohio to meet Nisbit. Her car was found in Rice County across from Shager Park in late July. Eventually Nisbit led police to her body in Shager Park. Her throat slit and body partially covered. With over 800 pages of discovery and numerous dvd’s and cd’s of evidence to go over, attorneys agreed to push the omnibus hearing well into October. According to the criminal complaint, Northfield police were dispatched to report of a past-action burglary at the car just past midnight on Sunday. The owner gave police a report and video surveillance showed it was the same pair who had burgled the car wash previously, however, the car was different. Around 4am, a male is seen breaking into the change machine while Olness remained behind the wheel of the vehicle as the lookout. The pair got away with $400. The cash box is worth far more. Northfield police found out the pair were arrested in Bloomington for possession of a stolen vehicle. Olness denied knowing the vehicle was stolen and told officers they were given GPS coordinates to meet other people and drop off the money. She wouldn’t tell officers the names of the others, crying, saying she was terrified of what they were capable of. Olness was charged with aiding and abetting 3rd degree burglary, a felony carrying a maximum 5 year prison sentence. Her next court appearance in Rice County is September 23rd. Overhaul of Wastewater Treatment plant The Wastewater treatment plant is in need of some real attention. Built in 1958, the last upgrade was in 2002. Over time, the facility will need repair and replacement. It will take approximately $11 million and 10 years to overhaul the plant. New laws are also pressing the matter. Mayor Graham says every year over the next 10 years they’ll need to find ways to pay for portions of the repairs, there could be bonding in the future as well. The biggest expenditures will come in the 2020’s with a million dollar request coming next year for 2017. Nfld Hosp. and St. Olaf team up for online health St. Olaf College is partnering with Northfield Hospital & Clinics to enhance the health services offered on campus. Community Relations Director Betsy Spethmann says the partnership combines traditional on-campus care with a cutting-edge virtual diagnostic service that students can access anytime, anywhere. It’s called Zipnosis. With this tool, students can log in, answer a series of questions about their health, and receive a clinician-based diagnosis and treatment plan (as well as a prescription, if needed) for common medical conditions — all without leaving their dorm room. This service, developed by St. Olaf alum Jon Pearce is available seven days a week for all St. Olaf students. St. Olaf President David Anderson says they’re always looking to better serve the students and this partnership will increase their students’ access to high-quality medical care while not increasing the cost to them and their families. Students who need additional medical attention for more complex conditions will be connected to the services they need through Northfield Hospital & Clinics’ system. CEO of Northfield Hospital & Clinics, Steve Underdahl says they’re delighted at being chosen to provide health services that meet St. Olaf’s high standards and are proud to work with St. Olaf toward more efficient and effective health care for students.
